Is it seriously 1875W rated? (I’m going to assume for one socket. Because a madman would plug two deep fryers into a power strip.)
I am tempted, but only if I can set a timer manually or directly. (Or if I would need to push a button; I think I have a leftover Osprey finger box that is setup via Bluetooth only.)
@pakopako You know how some people fill the coffee maker with water and grounds before going to bed, and set a timer?
Well, who doesn’t want to wake up to the smell of hash browns frying up? (Alternately, wake up to a blazing grease fire in the kitchen; the choice is yours!)
@phr alexa compliant. I have some similar and alexa turns on/off my lights. I also have it programmed to play “when the bodies hit the floor” and turn all of my interior lights red and flashing when I say “alexa intruder” good times!
@alacrity@pakopako Say you plug your modern air filter into this and then try to turn it on from your phone. You can give a filter power but you can’t make it blow without pressing its buttons.
@alacrity@DaveMan2048@pakopako@andymand
Good call. This is precisely why few of my appliances are “smart” connected. I do use one on a UV-C filter for my fish pond out front so it doesn’t run 24/7. That light doesn’t even have a switch so it’s perfect for that use case. The only other thing I have is a Wi-Fi connected smart electronic timer box for my pool equipment. That one has come in very handy for being able to turn the stuff on (especially in the winter) when I’m traveling. If an unexpected freeze happens I can control it from across the world. Conveniently it has the capability of having a “turn on at power reset” function. This allows it to default back to the pre-programmed setting as soon as it makes contact with electricity once it’s restored (if it’s interrupted).
As mentioned, the vast majority of my appliances have electronic switches so would be virtually useless connected to something like this. In fact, many (such my coffee pot and instapot) already have a delay function baked into the equipment controls.
@shoodes Yeah, the Sonoff smart switches have been pretty good. After we had an 1800W induction cooktop start it turn itself on after it’s control board started to go wonky, I only run them on smart switches that turn off automatically at midnight and stay off until we need to use them
Also, if you’re thinking of using these to cut down some of your “vampire” appliances be aware of the fact that this in itself is a vampire. There is a constant electricity flow being used to keep it connected to your wi-fi.
/showme two vampires changing positions at a desk in an office full of cubicles
BTW… Are the little arrow buttons in the middle of these part of the programming/setup process or are they actual switches to turn on/off one or the other outlet mechanically?
@chienfou I don’t have these, but they could be both. I haven’t seen a smart outlet without a manual power button. They should toggle the outlets they are pointed at.
@gatepost1 they say they work with Tuya/Smart Life, which is still a third party service that could go away, but it’s a very well established cloud service for smart appliances.
I personally wouldn’t put more than ten amps total through one, just to be on the safe side.
@richrauch My brother and I used to be the smart outlets and lights for our parents. In this day and age, I guess these will have to do as my way of contributing to the 2.1 per household minimum population replacement rate.
I bought a pack of four single outlet controllers from this brand a few years ago. Use them to control holiday lights. Then I added a 3 outlet outdoor socket for the patio lights and pellet grill. App is simple but serviceable. They integrate into Google Home easily as well. In for a set.

Socket to me!!
@yakkoTDI
Meh will… For just under 15 bucks.
@chienfou @yakkoTDI “15 bucks”? It’s 20 bucks. Did they raise the price before I got here?
@richrauch @yakkoTDI
Nah, mea culpa. I stuck the “4” in the price instead of the quantity! It’s always been 20 bucks. $5 a piece.
*without (unfortunately)
Yep, my plugs ARE elderly, just like everything else electrical in this 70-year old house.
@phendrick Can’t wait to see what it does for disabled plugs, though.
@phendrick @Sunburn If you currently have any WeMo plugs, you’ll find out come January when their cloud goes dark…
@rpstrong

Noooooo! I’ve been living under a rock and had no idea my collection of Wemo plugs was scheduled to fail me.

Don’t want to use a damn app. Might get https://www.adafruit.com/product/2935 sometime.

@BelleGunness @phr and yet, Alexa IS the intruder. Cool config though.
@BelleGunness @Jonas4321 @phr
Hard to call an invited guest an intruder…
@BelleGunness @chienfou @phr true…
@BelleGunness @chienfou @Jonas4321 @phr Well, for the first 3 days anyway…
careful here- these will only work in stuff with a mechanical switch- not an electronic one.
most stuff defaults to off when power gets cut.
@alacrity can you elaborate on that?
@alacrity @pakopako Say you plug your modern air filter into this and then try to turn it on from your phone. You can give a filter power but you can’t make it blow without pressing its buttons.
@pakopako Dave nailed it
@alacrity Agree. No way the “automatic” coffee/espresso maker (probably this one https://www.philips.com/c-p/HD8915_09R1/incanto-super-automatic-espresso-machine) in the photo is going to do anything but power on (if that!) via such a smart plug

@alacrity That’s what a “fingerbot” button pusher if for.
@alacrity @DaveMan2048 @pakopako But the ‘modern’ air filters sold on meh are already smart connected
@alacrity ferinstance - the coffee maker pictured
Do these support power monitoring? Like I would be able to track how much power the items that are plugged into it are using?
@shoodes Yeah, the Sonoff smart switches have been pretty good. After we had an 1800W induction cooktop start it turn itself on after it’s control board started to go wonky, I only run them on smart switches that turn off automatically at midnight and stay off until we need to use them
@shoodes I’d like that feature as well.
No USB charging port?
For anyone else using Home Assistant, it looks like these can be controlled with the Tuya integration
@sleuth - if these can be controlled with the smart life app as indicated, they will also work with Google Home/Assistant, as well.
@sleuth do they work with hauk tuya?
Could be useful in the future. More so than the single ones I have.

@chienfou I don’t have these, but they could be both. I haven’t seen a smart outlet without a manual power button. They should toggle the outlets they are pointed at.
Well. I need something to replace those wemo plugs with. What do we think? Fine for that?

@craigthom @gatepost1 why not get some more wemo? mine are working well
@craigthom @pskemp2 well, sure, for now. But what about Feb 1st?
@craigthom @gatepost1 @pskemp2 They may be working well now, but they will lose their remote controllability when Belkin shut’s down their cloud.
@craigthom @pskemp2 @rpstrong probably gonna go for it. Spent more for worse stuff
Why not?

I own the Gaggia Anima Prestige coffee maker shown - and there is literally zero point to having it plugged into one of these…
