@troy@werehatrack According to reviews at JeffyWorld, without the app enabled, all the lights do is continually rapidly strobe when turned on. One called it seizure-inducing.
If plugged into a motion-activated switch, might be a good countermeasure for tresspassers or Peeping Toms.
@werehatrack Agreed. I was excited because I need some but app only control no bueno for me as well. You CAN use them without the app but they flash looking for the wifi connection every time, which is so annoying. Dumb lights please.
@Felicianomiko@werehatrack You technically only need to use the app once for setup – after you connect them to WiFi and set your desired color temperature, they can be operated and dimmed with local controls.
A quick google says these may actually be Tuya devices under the hood and so they should be compatible with Home Assistant that way…not sure if I want to chance it though.
These don’t really fit in my kitchen since the only run of over counter cabinets I have are the 6ft over the wet bar. And that area is plenty well lit (literally and figuratively) already.
I need some better lighting for the she shed that in on the property we now live on. Lighting will definitely brighten up the place! Can’t wait to see just how illuminated the space will become! Shine on!
the copy says " Before Shadow, she had but one published story to her name. What’s more, she put out only two novels after it, both of which failed to reach the same heights as her debut."
but if Shadow was the hit, it was the 2nd book, not the “debut”.
why am I proofreading the fun ad part?
I have a problem.
@ekw I thought the same. Finding out that the entire thing is a fabrication, there is no such person and no such book, I’m left to wonder if this writeup was made by AI. If so… I may have to see myself out.
@dseanadams@ekw “Definitely not AI” - can you please elaborate on your certainty? That’s really the issue that I’m in contention with, not the semantics of the word ‘debut’.
the power button turns them on/off, and you can hold it down to dim/brighten the lights.
But first you must use the app at least once to set the color temp, no? And does that color temp setting survive long periods of being unplugged?
Some of us have grown weary of discovering that “features” are only as durable as the whims of those who inflict them upon us, so we’ve become even more cynical about “smart” devices than before. I’ve reached the point where even software-driven physical on/off controls are suspect because they infer a long-term battery drain (in relevant devices), and they can fail to function as represented if the logic circuitry develops problems. A hardware switch is a much more reliable device. (Don’t ask me about the otherwise very nice ceiling fan we bought at Costco whose sole control is a remote, and which is now misbehaving because something is going south in the fan’s control board.)
@troy@user87647985 IMO, the lack of a battery is one less point of failure and accelerated obsolescence; it’s an advantage if there’s no pressing need for the light to operate when the power is out. We’ve seen way too many otherwise functional no-serviceable-parts devices end up in e-waste because of a non-swappable battery.
On one side, if I needed to install lighting under my cabinets, I’d get some version of a COB strip with hardware adjustment for the brightness of the whole block, not individual unit settings. I use this with a hardware dimmer for garage lighting, and it’s a great setup. You could get a fancier/smaller dimmer for kitchen aesthetics (and home automation if that’s your jam).
On the other side, I have a hall closet that doesn’t have a fixture for some reason. After working out what it would take to run power from a nearby box and install a fixture/switch, I figured I’d at least try a couple cheap light bars first.
I bought these and “installed” them by sticking their plates to the ceiling with Loctite Tak. They turn on automatically when someone opens the door and shut off 20 seconds later. I’ve had them nine months and only had to charge them twice, and that was just with a reminder (they’ve never actually died).
Note - Please note two key points about this light. It only works in dark environments. Its light sensor detects ambient light, and if there’s enough light, the light won’t turn on. So, ensure a dark installation area. Also, don’t install it in high temperature spots. Heat can weaken the adhesive strip, making the light prone to sliding. Choose a normal temperature location for a secure installation
I bought six of these from Lowe’s and have 3 installed so far and I am looking for an alternative. These lights disconnect from wi-fi at least once a day and to reconnect them I need to unplug them, wait and then plug them back in, and even then it only works 3 out of 4 times and I need to delete it from the app and pair it again in the app. They suck and I won’t buy an Enbrighten product again, what a disappointment.

/showme a piano tuner tuning lights under a cabinet
@phendrick Here’s the image you requested for “a piano tuner tuning lights under a cabinet”
@phendrick The bot has a lot to learn about pianos.
@werehatrack I’m betting it’s never actually tuned one, only vicariously.
@phendrick @werehatrack
Remember… You can tune a piano but you can’t tuna fish.
@chienfou @phendrick @werehatrack au contraire, my aquaculture students can tuna fish
@pskemp2
What key?
@chienfou @pskemp2 Church key.
@chienfou
What key?
R♭
@chienfou @pskemp2
Key West?
@chienfou @pskemp2 @therealjrn

This one?
@pskemp2 @therealjrn @werehatrack
Do I really need to explain?
@chienfou Can you include at least one bad pun, and maybe do it in a haiku?
No manual mode? No bueno.
@werehatrack They do have an on/off button which you can hold down to adjust brightness, but you will need the app to set the color temperature

Well, that write-up was a very fine piece of fiction in itself!
@Kyeh I was rapt!! And then I wanted to find out what year it was published, and now I feel somehow betrayed…
A quick google says these may actually be Tuya devices under the hood and so they should be compatible with Home Assistant that way…not sure if I want to chance it though.
94 CRI? Inconceivable in a meh product! Although I guess they are $15 apiece * 4
Cool! On a side note, I have mixed maple brown sugar
oatmeal with apple and cinnamon oatmeal this morning…
The packets looked the same.
@Bumplepimp That’s actually a nice combination, in my estimation.

@ekw I think it’s still consistent and Shadow wasn’t her debut.
Book 1: 1000 sold
Shadow (book 2): 1 million sold
Book 3: 20 sold
Book 4: 20 sold
Book’s 3 and 4 would have failed to reach the same height as her debut book 1 …
@ekw @MogoPrime Definitely not AI.
The one published ‘story’ is meant to mean short story in this case, so her first novel would still be called her ‘debut’ novel.
@dseanadams @ekw “Definitely not AI” - can you please elaborate on your certainty? That’s really the issue that I’m in contention with, not the semantics of the word ‘debut’.
@ekw @MogoPrime I wrote it.
@dseanadams @ekw @MogoPrime

@dseanadams @ekw Oh, ok. Thank you!
@dseanadams @MogoPrime fair enough
@dseanadams @ekw @MogoPrime
Check and mate!
@dseanadams @ekw @MogoPrime @PhysAssist
Wait a minute. How can we be sure that dseanadams in not an ai?
@blaineg @dseanadams @ekw @MogoPrime @PhysAssist
You MUST use wi-fi to control them at all! There is no manual way to control them. No thanks!
@EnigmaV8 Not true - the power button turns them on/off, and you can hold it down to dim/brighten the lights.
@EnigmaV8 @troy

I logged in just to hit the MEH button.
@user87647985 They charge by the 3-prong electrical socket that connects to your power company. It’s old tech, but still the standard in the US.
@macphoenix @user87647985 They probably don’t charge at all, and just run from 110VAC. (And I’d be surprised if the plug wasn’t just two-prong.)
@user87647985 These are meant to be a permanent solution. These aren’t cheap anywhere else – take a look at these alternatives:
@troy @user87647985 IMO, the lack of a battery is one less point of failure and accelerated obsolescence; it’s an advantage if there’s no pressing need for the light to operate when the power is out. We’ve seen way too many otherwise functional no-serviceable-parts devices end up in e-waste because of a non-swappable battery.
This seems like an in-between product.

@Kabn
There are very specific standards for closet lights in the NEC…
Are there very specific standards against closet lights? None of my small closets have lights either. Drives me batty.
@DaveMan2048

Here’s a $12 solution from the fine folks at woot.com.

I’m not installing another got dang app.

@user51545664 This is exactly the kind of thing that makes me say “not just no but hell no!” to “smart” devices.
If this doesn’t come with a shitty app I’m gonna be sooo pissed.
