“Runs on standard batteries (not included)”
What are “standard Batteries” Double or Triple -the As? I can’t tell from the photo (your monitor may be better).
@mediocrebot Definitely AI. Right hand (left if you are looking at it (for those in the back)) doesn’t have all his fingers; and Paul fever had all his fingers!
@blaineg@mediocrebot@phendrick Back in school in the 1970s I feel I got a pretty good education on how Congress worked. My mother even too me on a trip to Washington DC on Amtrak which was semi-functional. Got to sit in the balcony of the House of Representatives while in session, and also see a session of the Honorable (then) Supreme Court. So yeah it mostly used to work and public school students were taught it.
@shoodes adding weight of four AA batteries. I preferred two different styles of folding and collapsing candle lanterns. Candles like 1” diameter by 4”s long are lighter and last longer. Short trip it’s no big deal but PCT eventually you feel every ounce.
I own these lanterns too and keep in four rooms for power outages. Not bright enough to read by. $2.00 ea at Ace on sale few years ago.
@craigcush@shoodes For serious trail adventuring I would recommend a better quality lantern and a headlamp, such as this sold at REI but you’ll spend $100 not $12. Also, take lithium batteries. They are lighter than regular alkaline batteries, and store more, but yes, also cost more.
I bought two slightly different lanterns from SideDeal. Used one last night and it illuminated my entire yard, which is pretty big 1/3 acre. Needs only 3 AA batteries though. And I only had to buy two.
@Kidsandliz I used it for about an hour and it’s still fine, so I don’t know how long they will last. I have rechargeable batteries and would much rather use something that takes AA batteries than AAA batteries for obvious reasons. I have to exercise the hell out of one of my dogs, especially because we were out for 3.5 hours last night. I just need something to light up the yard so I can throw the ball for him for a while.
@capnjb Interesting. I prefer rechargeable stuff too when I know I’ll be in a place where I can recharge it. If I’m away from a power source (commercial, power bank(s)), I prefer AA-powered stuff because then I can carry spares.
@ItalianScallion Don’t get me wrong I do have AA powered lights and a mountain of alkaline batteries. But I also have at least 30 battery banks plus three big Ecoflow batteries and 8 solar panels so I should be good if I need some 'lectric
I also carry a big battery bank in my center console with a myriad of assorted cables for any occasion or if a friend forgets something I can toss them the solution and be done with it.
Thanks for the idea to carry a power bank in my car, @capnjb… along with my car charger intended for my phone, but hey, it could recharge a power bank too. Duh.
@capnjb@ItalianScallion All things being equal, I’m actually more inclined to opt for the device with a standard battery option over the one with a built in rechargeable, but non-replaceable battery. I’ve migrated to rechargeable AA lithium batteries for most power hungry devices. These are able to deliver a nominal 1.5V over most of the discharge curve and seem to have as much or more capacity than a typical alkaline cell in most of my use cases. Granted they have a higher initial cost than alkalines or NiMH, but generally break even in less than half a dozen charge cycles and don’t prematurely set off the battery low warnings like NiMH commonly does in devices not specifically designed to accommodate that chemistry.
How mini are these? I don’t see any dimensions anywhere. Can’t even gauge by battery size as that’s not mentioned. These could be keychain sized and use watch batteries for all we know.
@arysta It takes 4 AA batteries, as @psbales said in an earlier comment, and if you enlarge and look at the image showing the battery compartment you’ll see “AA” written along the outside edge. I’m guessing the base is around three inches in diameter, just to get started on figuring out the size.
Power went out in the neighborhood and surrounding area last night and my flashlight wasn’t charged. I would like some battery stuff but I’d like to be able to read Amazon review before I buy. I’m very picky. 4 double AA’s seems like a lot also. I do have a flashlight that runs on that and it seems to last a while but I know there all different.
@Star2236 Keep in mind that AAA has much lower capacity and isn’t much cheaper than AA, so you’re not gaining much benefit other than the device it’s in being slightly smaller, dimmer and quicker to die. That might be an important factor in a FNAF type situation.
I think I bought some of these ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO! Does meh really have a warehouse they haven’t cleaned out yet? Perhaps the one with the Ark of The Covenant?

What a bright idea!
@yakkoTDI in reality because this item is on Meh it may not be that bright of an idea.
Mini Lanterns for Mini Brains that use “AI”.
@DrunkCat So you will be stocking up in hopes of winning them back.
@mediocrebot I would buy those lanterns!
@yakkoTDI k
Banana for scale?

@JohnQ118 4x AA, per Amazon link with sharper pics.
@JohnQ118 I was thinking the same thing
@JohnQ118 FOUR each? No wonder they don’t tell you!
@JohnQ118 @psbales Amazon link is where?
Perfect for a mini Paul Revere.
@phendrick
/showme a mini Paul Revere riding to warn the colonists with his mini lanterns
@mediocrebot Ah! The bot knows history and put PR on a horse (and not a bus) on an unpaved road and has a church tower in the background.
Maybe we should put bots in Congress instead of what we have there now?
@mediocrebot Definitely AI. Right hand (left if you are looking at it (for those in the back)) doesn’t have all his fingers; and Paul fever had all his fingers!
@bigjl98 @mediocrebot I read somewhere that cartoon hands typically have only three fingers. Don’t remember why.
@mediocrebot @phendrick
Well, nobody understands how either one works, so why not?

Does anyone know how long the battery life of these are? Looking to use them while backpacking while attached to my bag.
@shoodes kinda depends on the battery. (Sorry, I’m being very unhelpful.)
@shoodes I have a very similar Dorcy-branded lantern that gets occasional use and the batteries last for years. Not sure if that helps.
@mehvid1 Let’s say for example like some Costco AA’s lol. Like continuous runtime.
@shoodes runtime always seems to be mysteriously missing from meh light source listings

Why do I even come here anymore? It’s like I want to be disappointed in the morning.
@Willijs3 I just watch news from around the world and that gets me started on my disappointment for the day.
I bought two slightly different lanterns from SideDeal. Used one last night and it illuminated my entire yard, which is pretty big 1/3 acre. Needs only 3 AA batteries though. And I only had to buy two.
@Fuzzalini what ones and how long did they stay lit?
@Kidsandliz I used it for about an hour and it’s still fine, so I don’t know how long they will last. @Kidsandliz This is what I bought, they are gone now
Meh conspiracy to send storms through Georgia knocking my power out for 3 hours the evening before these go on sale?
I’m a flashlight and lantern guy, but I tap out if they need replaceable batteries. Rechargeable stuff is an instant buy.

@ItalianScallion Circle of life and all that

@ItalianScallion Thanks!
slightly Georgia Red. . .
Big bucks ($30-40) at Costco, but bloody bright!
Solar charging, and powerbank too.

Indeed, on a two-for-Tuesday in February of 2025, I got a pair of these with an Eveready branding for $10. Wimpy, but they work.
@uncleop It was a big misunderstanding… it was the IRK of the Covenant.
