@Bayamonprieto77 The restaurants aren’t buying the bulk packages and the stores are having trouble getting consumer sizes. Seems logical someone should be selling the bulk packages directly to consumers. Way to go Mediocre! (I just wish it was pintos - those I could use).
@Bayamonprieto77@ergomeh the problem with this theory is that bulk should be cheaper. Especially when trying to move product you can’t sell. Small bags of beens don’t cost this much. Pasta I buy namebrand at the store for 50 cents a pound and it’s only a dollar when not on sale. Sidedeals is $33 for 25lbs which is crazy.
@Bayamonprieto77@ergomeh@unksol Well there is probably a hefty shipping cost associated with shipping a 25 lb. bag O’ beans. Obviously a flat $5 isn’t going to cover that cost. They have to “bake” it into the price. Pardon the pun.
@jmoor783@Raptor_007 When I was in college with roommates, we often had a dish called “Twice Burnt Beans” because we would tend to fall asleep while cooking or reheating the beans. As long as we didn’t scrape the bottom, they were still good!
@SnakeJG are you certain? I was just there and thinking of picking up a bag for some bean soup and I recall the price being a lot higher. Not sure if they were Navy or Great Northern, but they were white. On Amazon the prices are a LOT higher than these being offered.
@Jonas4321 That’s what instacart shows me. Might be different in different places. My local Food Lion is much more expensive at $2.69/lb, but I wouldn’t pay that price for dried beans.
@SnakeJG
I guess you’re not suffering from the effects of COVID hoarding.
My local stores are weird because the small packages are all gone and there’s 25 lb sacks there instead, of usually just one or two varieties, until they sell out.
Last trip, it was either 25 lbs of lentils or 25 lbs of black beans.
No pintos or white beans.
@SnakeJG Yeah. Sometimes you can get the 2lb bags for 99 cents. Bet never more than a buck a pound! I got a bunch for free from our church pantry. They couldn’t get rid of them!
@Dynamik take it to a soup kitchen. Around here, according to the news anyway, they are still operating giving carry out. There is also a food bank here that would likely rebag it in zip locks for people.
@Dynamik@star2236 That’s odd considering how many of them are running out of food. All they’d need to do is have a drop off point at the facility instead of taking it directly from people. If they were worried about virus on the stuff, just have one appropriately protected person move it to wherever, let it sit 5 or 7 or whatever worst case is days for any virus that may or may not be on it and then deal with it. Around here they are still accepting food but being careful about distancing when they take it.
@Dynamik@Kidsandliz@star2236 many food banks want cash instead of food, because they can get food real, real cheap, by the case or pallet, and get what they need, but sorting through the odds and ends people donate cost them more in labor than it’s worth.
Meh. Buck and a quarter a pound for dry navy beans at the local grocery stores. Goes on sale at Kroger for $0.89 with regularity, and occasionally $0.69.
Actually I haven’t been in a grocery store since March 7th when I could see the writing on the wall. I probably wouldn’t have to venture into one until sometime in July or early August if I wasn’t down to my last dozen 2-liters of Pepsi. If I’m careful I might be able to stretch that out until the beginning of June.
We have locally produced black beans and will now have Navy beans for variety. Soak overnight and pressure cook for 45 minutes. We cook with turkey, tomato paste, a bit of vinegar and some sugar. Usually we cook the beans first and add the rest later.
With (perhaps) shortages of various meats due to plant closures, learning to cook with decent beans and rice can be very useful. I am not a prepper.
@radi0j0hn you don’t have to soak beans in a pressure cooker. Just cook them a little longer. It’s awesome. Dry beans are probably my favorite thing to make right now.
@joker@radi0j0hn But once you’ve soaked them you can drain off that water and rinse the beans. In my anecdotal experience, it takes down some of the … side effects that are generally associated with beans. Soak and rinse, my grandma always said. Wash the farts down the drain. (or she actually used the bean water on her plants.)
Hmm, 25lbs for $34 is $1.36/lb. My most expensive local grocery store sells navy beans for $1.25/lb, and they sell in convenient 1lb bags instead of giant 25lb bags that won’t fit in my pantry.
@jandrese@phendrick my plan is so continue to try and find a use for the existing mix of beans in the pantry. Cause let’s face it they aren’t that great and I am not starving or needing 25 pounds. It took a week to eat Alton Browns baked beans. Do you want to eat beans for a year?
@lyoness@rjquillin I have never noticed this at my Dollar Tree, only because I’m usually there for other things, I’m going to make a trip to see if they have some black-eyed peas
@lyoness@mehbee
Used to be, in San Diego area, easy to find staples like this at Costco, Smart & Final, Dollar Tree, Food4Less all the time. Not so much any more. Dry goods, beans, rice, pasta shelves have been empty, but it’s getting a bit easier the last few weeks, just not much selection; you buy what’s there and be happy.
Now we’re led to believe meat may be the next victim, with so many of the packers closing down and chickens getting slaughtered perhaps even eggs.
Isn’t this what we commonly see in 3rd world and socialist economies?
@Fen_Star
Meh sales manager: “Hey we need photos of two 25 pound bags of beans”

@chienfou Ha! Was thinking the same thing, but figured it would be a couple weeks, you know, after the beans have been delivered and are making an…impact.
Having tried to cook with old dried beans (hint for others - if you simmer dried beans for 3 hours and they’re still crunchy, they’re too old and the chili you’re trying to make will be horrible no matter how long you cook it for), I would be concerned at the lack of mention of a use-by date or some kind of date. If it wasn’t for the price, which makes it so that concern doesn’t actually matter.
@ravenblack I didn’t know Old Dried Beans was still cooking! Is he still working out of that converted gas station turned taqueria? If I recall correctly, he played a mean tuba, which always made the customers smile.

@redlenses Yes, ridiculous pricing for bulk dry beans. Plus, over on Sidedeal, you can pay ridiculous prices for pasta to go alongside.
I do not think I would be able to use this much beans at all anyway.
If you want navy beans for breakfast, all you gotta do is join the navy! (You’ll also get navy beans for lunch and dinner, as an added inducement to join up!)
@arfdawg@joe645@philiph7 They seem to vary a bit by region. The Walmarts where I live now are just fine. When I lived in the Mid-Atlantic I generally avoided them.
@joe645@Limewater@philiph7 The closest one ot me is about 40 minute away next to a really seedy trailer park and a municipal airport. it looks like the kind of place your car will be broken into if you park there. Never been. I’ve actually only been in one once. Somewhere on a drive across the country. Don’t even remember what state. Went in because there was a McDonald’s inside and I wanted an egg McMuffin. Then I went into the Walmart to grab some bottles of water. It was a very very sad place. Everybody seemed miserable. I didnt even buy the water. Too depressing.
@arfdawg@joe645@Limewater@philiph7 so strange. Our Walmart is clean/nice. Some in major cities are dirty/gross. I guess I would avoid those too if that was normal.
Short of running a soup kitchen, exactly how long would 25 lbs of dried beans last? Could they theoretically outlive you and become a family relic? Would they sprout and turn bitter if not stored in a very dry, dark place?
@Dog19026@Lighter No, dried beans last forever. I have a 10 year old 50 pound bucket of dried beans and they are still tasty cooked. I basically boil them before using.
I think people are thinking about this the wrong way. It’s next to impossible to get weights on Amazon right now unless you’re willing to wait for them to be shipped on the slow boat from somewhere (probably China). And even then they’re crazy expensive. But, right here, you can get 25lb weights shipped from the USA (and likely prioritized!) for an only slightly inflated price. Think of how you could enhance your home gym and living room workouts with the inclusion of these weights. And then, if the gyms ever open up again, you can eat or donate them to a food pantry. Everyone wins!
To those bellyaching about the price, shipping a 25 lb. bag of beans anywhere in the lower 48 contiguous United States ain’t free. $5 bucks isn’t going to cover it. I’m sure a good portion of the $34 dollar cost is related to the shipping.
So you might be able to get them cheaper from Aldi or some other grocer, YOU have to go get them. You have to put on your mask, (In Maryland) go to the store, mingle with potential covid-19 carriers and bring them home. And you might have trouble finding them.
This deal isn’t for everyone, me included. But stop bellyaching about the price. All things considered, it’s reasonable.
@Trinityscrew I do not have to drive 12 hours to the warehouse. I have to spend 50 cents on gas to drive to the store. That has also had to ship them in from the warehouse and built that into the cost. Obviously the store gets a cheaper price delivering a semi. But not that much cheaper.
@unksol Yeah. That much cheaper. Delivering, say a bulk pallet weighing 2000 lbs. to ONE address is WAY cheaper than delivering 80 25 lb. parcels to 80 different addresses.
@Kidsandliz I agree. This is not a deal I’m interested in. But for those of us who might be it’s really not a bad price. If they listed them for $9.15 plus $24.85 for shipping (Amazon’s shipping price) would it seem like a better deal?
@Kidsandliz@Trinityscrew Simple answer: To store up for a time when grocery stores aren’t getting deliveries and food is hard to find. We have a pretty intricate and fragile logistical system to get food to us every few days.
Lots of people store up food for such scenarios.
@Kidsandliz@Limewater@Trinityscrew except if you want to stock up it’s still cheaper to buy it from the store. You would only buy it at this price if you were in a full on panic and there is no reason. And you would need to repackage it anyway.
@Limewater I see your point, but you still have to actually like beans to want to hoard this unless you are in a position of having to resort eating things you hate. And since people have posted these don’t last all that long before they are permanently crunchy and awful, this is probably too much for a family of 1. What would make sense is stocking up on food you like that can last a long time.
By the way, pet food is likely also caught in the supply chain snafu since much of that is made in China as well and few container ships were loaded there for 2.5 months. While some pet food is made in the USA, if the Chinese made stuff becomes scarce, so will the USA made stuff since people will buy what they can find even if it costs more. Can’t really feed cats and dogs only people food if you want them to stay healthy and get all the nutrients they need.
@Kidsandliz@Trinityscrew@unksol Yes, it is still cheaper to buy it from the store, provided you can find them. It’s cheaper still to have already bought it on sale before all of this. And it would kind of be a jerk move at this point to go in and clear the shelves.
RE: How long this lasts: As @unksol alluded to, people who are buying food to store it for long periods usually repack it into something that will allow it to last much longer, rather than just leave it out in the bags it came in. In a sealed container with an oxygen absorber pack these could last decades.
There’s so much you can do with dried white beans. Make a bean dip, or a soup, or a white chicken chili, I have a bunch of dried beans in my food storage. Use them all the time.
Here’s a lovely song about my favorite food
Lima, lento, soy, and pinto
Navy, northern, and garbanzo
Kidneys and frijoles negros
Woo woo woo!
How 'bout you?
High in fiber
Low in fat
Hey, I betcha didn’t know that
When I eat beans
I sit in my own little cloud
Nobody comes to visit me
In my little cloud
I don’t know why
Maybe ‘cause I’m cuttin’ muffins
Because…
I love beans!
Hey hey hey!
I love beans everyday!
Beans are an excellent source of protein
I love beans!
Diggydoo!
@RiotDemon
Oh, my mistake. It’s still a lot of beans to eat. I understand stores are short on them right now. I guess I just don’t eat beans that often and it’s just my boyfriend and I. I could eat soup every week but he gets sick of it so that’s my lack of beans. Unless it’s baked beans in the summer.
So are great northern beans twice as dense as navy beans? Is that because the navy beans have to float?
I think I have 8 pounds of various beans and lentils acquired when resources started becoming scarce. That looks like a huge supply to me. But prior to the new American way of life, grocery shopping for anything but staples was on kind of a per meal basis. I feel like fajitas, ok let’s go to the store and get chicken and tortillas, that kind of thing. Having stock of more than a couple pounds of dry goods feels weird to me.
@djslack Exactly! I used to go to the grocery store pretty much every day just before dinner time. I bought toilet paper when I was down to a couple of rolls. I’ll probably try to keep up some inventory when this is over but old habits die hard.
@sammydog01 now I feel like I’ve learned bread pretty well of late. I am no longer reliant on Sunbeam or that temptress Sara Lee. I can produce my own alternative and their products are now a choice. But unless I get a cow, yes, I’ll still need milk.
Wow. Hard pass. This is literally the worst product I’ve ever seen on Meh before. Didn’t push the meh button because ‘meh’ would be giving it too much credit.
Soaking beans in a dilute solution (approximate 2-3 percent) of baking soda for 15-20 minutes before cooking will make them easier to digest and reduce the flatulence part of the equation. You can rinse the beans with water after the soak.
Alternately, putting a pinch of baking soda during cooking gets the same result.
I use one teaspoon of baking soda in one gallon of water and use it as needed. I use an old water gallon jug, easy to shake and dilute.
I soak almost everything for about 7 to 10 minutes before using. The I rinse with plain water. It helps reduce the pesticides on the surface of produce.
Corn, fruit, potatoes, peas…
I give beans a few extra minutes of soak time as they are dry.

@Jamileigh17 I thought it said 50 pounds too but looking real close, it seems to say 30.
@cengland0 I checked by converting the 22.68 kg
@Jamileigh17 Good catch, it does clearly say 22.68 there.
Strong pass on this. You can buy 2lbs of dried beans at Aldi for $1.69. To just match that price, this should be $21

$1.14 a pound at Walmart, Meh needs to rethink this one
@joe645 interesting. So the real question here is, “how much am I willing to pay to NOT go into a Walmart?”
@joe645 @philiph7 I’d pay anything not to enter a Walmart. Most depressing place ever
@arfdawg @joe645 @philiph7 They seem to vary a bit by region. The Walmarts where I live now are just fine. When I lived in the Mid-Atlantic I generally avoided them.
@joe645 @Limewater @philiph7 The closest one ot me is about 40 minute away next to a really seedy trailer park and a municipal airport. it looks like the kind of place your car will be broken into if you park there.
@arfdawg @joe645 @Limewater @philiph7 so strange. Our Walmart is clean/nice. Some in major cities are dirty/gross. I guess I would avoid those too if that was normal.
@arfdawg @joe645 @Limewater @philiph7 @unksol yep, with WalMart YMMV.
Short of running a soup kitchen, exactly how long would 25 lbs of dried beans last? Could they theoretically outlive you and become a family relic? Would they sprout and turn bitter if not stored in a very dry, dark place?
@Dog19026 Maybe a year. They really don’t last forever before turning into something that remains crunchy no matter how long you soak and cook.
@Dog19026 @Lighter No, dried beans last forever. I have a 10 year old 50 pound bucket of dried beans and they are still tasty cooked. I basically boil them before using.
Price Comparison
$93.20 for Similar Navy Beans plus shipping at Amazon | $106.60 for Similar Great Northern Beans plus shipping at Amazon
The prices you’re using for comparison here here INCLUDE THE $24.85 SHIPPING.
Meh, please fix this.
@gt0163c
…until you poke a hole in a bag…
@Trinityscrew When I say “bring them home”, I mean the beans. Not the covid-19 carriers. I’d advise against that.
@Trinityscrew The real question though is why would I even want 25 pounds of beans even if they were practically free?
@Kidsandliz I agree. This is not a deal I’m interested in. But for those of us who might be it’s really not a bad price. If they listed them for $9.15 plus $24.85 for shipping (Amazon’s shipping price) would it seem like a better deal?
@Trinityscrew No because I’d never want 25 pounds of beans therefore even if it was free, for me it wouldn’t be a good deal.
@Kidsandliz @Trinityscrew Simple answer: To store up for a time when grocery stores aren’t getting deliveries and food is hard to find. We have a pretty intricate and fragile logistical system to get food to us every few days.
Lots of people store up food for such scenarios.
@Kidsandliz @Limewater @Trinityscrew except if you want to stock up it’s still cheaper to buy it from the store.
@Kidsandliz @Trinityscrew @unksol Yes, it is still cheaper to buy it from the store, provided you can find them.
That Walmart price is online not in store. So stay at home. When in doubt do without
OMG, I want the Cool Beans vs. Jelly Beans graphic on a T-shirt! Please make this happen!
I was never in the Navy and I live in the Southwest. Am I still eligible to buy these? So many new rules recently I thought I’d better ask
@AndyChase No. No, you can’t buy these.
In Colorado, the health department SHUT DOWN a Walmart because not enough people (customers & employees) were following basic preventative rules.
Some DIED.
So, go ahead, go to a store like that to save a few dollars on beans.
Beans
They are good for your heart
The more you eat
The more you fart
The more you fart
The better you feel
So…
There’s so much you can do with dried white beans. Make a bean dip, or a soup, or a white chicken chili, I have a bunch of dried beans in my food storage. Use them all the time.
I Like Beans
Here’s a lovely song about my favorite food
Lima, lento, soy, and pinto
Navy, northern, and garbanzo
Kidneys and frijoles negros
Woo woo woo!
How 'bout you?
High in fiber
Low in fat
Hey, I betcha didn’t know that
When I eat beans
I sit in my own little cloud
Nobody comes to visit me
In my little cloud
I don’t know why
Maybe ‘cause I’m cuttin’ muffins
Because…
I love beans!
Hey hey hey!
I love beans everyday!
Beans are an excellent source of protein
I love beans!
Diggydoo!
Why does the bag say “30 lb” and the Meh copy says “25 lb”?
@dmercure actually I think that is a 50 judging by the wt in kg.
What are you going to do with 2 30lbs bags of beans? I know probably a lot of soup. How long will it take you to go through these?
@star2236 bags are 25lbs.
@RiotDemon
@djslack what now? Do you not buy things on sale?
@unksol things, yes. groceries, I didn’t. I do now.
@djslack Exactly! I used to go to the grocery store pretty much every day just before dinner time. I bought toilet paper when I was down to a couple of rolls. I’ll probably try to keep up some inventory when this is over but old habits die hard.
@djslack @sammydog01 I’m hoping people keep it up so when a hurricane is coming, it’s not as bad.
@djslack @RiotDemon BUT WE’LL STILL NEED MILK AND BREAD!
@sammydog01 now I feel like I’ve learned bread pretty well of late. I am no longer reliant on Sunbeam or that temptress Sara Lee. I can produce my own alternative and their products are now a choice. But unless I get a cow, yes, I’ll still need milk.
Ordered for my neighbor.

Wow.
I give beans a few extra minutes of soak time as they are dry.
i assume ~$20 shipping fee to ship 25 lbs is rolled into this price?
Definitely not going to need beans for awhile.
50 pounds of The Great Northern for the price of 25 pounds Navy?.. better start selling The Beano tomorrow!!!
That’s an AWESOME deal! I would like to see pinto, chili bean, or 15 bean mix if possible.
FOOLS! TOOLS! JEWELS! AWESOME!
I just panic bought a four pound bag of pinto beans. Anyone have a recipe handy?
@sammydog01 last time I made pinto beans I put some ham, pepper, and some other spices. Into the crock pot they went.
I’d use the pressure cooker now.
@RiotDemon I have some leftover ham. I’ll give it a try.
Decided to donate our bag to the local food bank.
