@ircon96@pmarin@tweezak I could have sworn I saw a sarcastic comment about efforts to ban porn here earlier - maybe deleted? Anyhow this was in today’s A.Word.A.Day:
“Senator Smoot (Republican, Ut.)
Is planning a ban on smut.
Oh rooti-ti-toot for Smoot of Ut.
And his reverend occiput.
Smite, Smoot, smite for Ut.,
Grit your molars and do your dut.,
Gird up your l–ns,
Smite h-p and th-gh,
We’ll all be Kansas
By and by.
Ogden Nash; Invocation; 1931.
Note: This is the opening stanza of Ogden Nash’s poem on Senator Reed Smoot of Utah whose anti-porn stance led to a newspaper headline “Smoot Smites Smut”.
I’ve been drinking a lot of the cucumber lime at work because we had an expired case! It is surprisingly not terrible! A co-worker said it’s very good mixed with cranberry juice.
I was thinking just today that I needed a cold, refreshing drink. I pushed a lever and out came the most natural and refreshing drink known… ice cold water.
And then the boss came by and asked about the late report.
@blaineg Yeah but the cucumber is better as a sexual aid. And for those using the non-vegetable meat product instead, there might be a watermelon coming out in 9 months.
@Jamileigh17 Yeah, super disappointed they don’t have stevia like the other one. Otherwise I would definitely be signing up for the panic attack one of these would definitely give me
All the artificial sweeteners are too cloying for my palate. I’d rather have actual sugar. It tastes better, and if I’m already making the stupid choice to dump this much caffiene into my system, I might as well get to enjoy a sugar high along with it!
At a buck a piece this is a great price for an energy drink. I got the Mango Tango last time & all I can say is they are ehem… not good. But it’s not like I drink these things for the taste anyhow. There is not one energy drink out there that I would say tastes good. The best they get is when they don’t make me gag.
At 300mg caffeine, I make sure I only consume them earlier in the day. It seems like a lot but tolerance for caffeine is quite high.
When I was in Singapore for 2 weeks on business the hotel kept this in the room fridge. It quenched my thirst after a hot Singapore day incredibly well. I really wish they sold it in the USA.
@blaineg@Kyeh when I was in Japan for work I would buy Pocari Sweat at the 7-11 (yes they have those though I think the store name was purchased and not related to the US version). Pocari
Sweat was a good electrolyte drink not overloaded with sugars or sweeteners. Once they had a promo and I got a free Pocari Sweat reusable water/drink bottle which I still have today 30 year so later.
@blaineg@pmarin That would
be a great water bottle.
7-11 in Japan is incredible - totally different; they sell furniture and other large things! Same in Thailand, my brother told me.
@blaineg@Kyeh@pmarin It is my understanding that a large Japanese investor now owns the entire 7-11 empire, but yes, the US and Japanese instantiations are entirely different. Something similar has taken place with Circle K and Valero, but the details on that one fog my brain. What I know for sure is the we once again have some 7-11 stores cropping up in Houston after an absence of nearly 40 years. (Southland Corp. the prior parent, pulled out of Houston when they got pissed off at the Baptist preacher who had his flock picketing the 7-11 stores because Those Heathens Are Selling porNOGriffy Right Here In AR NEBBERHOODS! (I wish I was kidding about that, but it really happened.)
The regular Celsius (cucumber lime in this offer) are my wife’s favorite. She finally quit drinking those nasty Diet Red Bulls! This is definitely a good deal BTW. As for the Heat (mango tango) one - I don’t know anything about that model of Celsius.
It is a good thing that I passed on getting these yesterday on sidedeal because fuku you, meh, and your $50 irks. Now I can buy them today without that money going towards an irk. Genius! You guys are really on to something.
@cpietra@melliott@troy Erythritol is added to some stevia products. Stevia itself just contains steviols.
I switched from a powdered stevia mix that has erythritol to a liquid one without. Taste is better, actually, as long as I add it to my tea before the hot water instead of after it’s steeped.
@cpietra@melliott@troy how much is big sugar paying you? Kidding, haven’t read the study yet. Most of these trendy headliners I tend to find yawn worthy when studied but that’s my obvious bias and ignorance showing. Carry on…
performance-enhancing drug of choice for America’s long-haul truckers
Years ago I remember stopping at truck stops for diesel for my camper, and there would be vials of “diet pills” for sale up on the counter where you paid. Some sort of legal amphetamines, or at least was legal at the time. So, no, I don’t think it was just caffeine that was the trucker’s drug of choice.
@pmarin That was probably ephedrine, which the FDA banned for dietary-supplement (but not pharmaceutical) usage in 2004, and as of 2006 became further restricted, along with pseudoephedrine (aka the version of Sudafed that actually works worth a heck), as precursor ingredients useful for chemical conversion into methamphetamine.
@pmarin@SubGothius Actually, it was phenylpropanolamine, the same substance that was the active ingredient in the original formula of Contac. The problem was that it unpredictably caused disabling or fatal strokes in a small percentage of users, so the FDA eventually banned its sale for anything except veterinary use.
I tried to track down a mango tango to try before ordering this since the octopus breakfast site decided to stop shipping my Orange Mountain Dew Kickstart subscription orders. Couldn’t find a single store with it so I’m just going in blind and hoping it’s good.
Wasn’t there a recent report about sugar substitutes (like Stevia) that showed they caused strokes and other negative medical conditions? And there are countries that are banning these ingredients, but FDA won’t get on board in USA?
@Mandamm No idea about strokes. Do know stevia and monkfruit are both huge migraine triggers for me which sucks cause it is starting to pop in everything since it is trendy.
@Mandamm Erythritol, not stevia. It’s unfortunately the case that a lot of stevia products have erythritol cut into it. Some of the powdered ones have maltitol instead, some of the liquid ones are just stevia (and water and alcohol to keep it dissolved).
@Mandamm The causation direction is not actually known. Unlike earlier problematic sweeteners, erythritol is something the body can produce, during metabolism of glucose. But it’s not the usual way it metabolizes that. So the study could be a sign that unhealthy people produce more erythritol, rather than erythritol itself causing issues.
@AySz88@Mandamm Even sillier, the study as I saw it was just observational, which means it might not even be that unhealthy people produce more erythritol, it might be that unhealthy people are more likely to consume artificial sweetener products, which would absolutely make sense!
@AySz88@Mandamm@ravenblack
I too was interested in this “study” as so many products including say Truvia have erythritol but as @AySz88 & @ravenblack mentioned the study does not show exact causation being consumption as erythritol is produced as a product of our body’s metabolism and not just consumption. So nothing can yet be concluded about the effects of consumption but hopefully they will do a real study based on consumption. If interested, take a look at the link below for more details. https://peterattiamd.com/more-hype-than-substance-erythritol-and-cardiovascular-risk/
(I just realized the Google results are flooded with something unrelated, so just to be clear: with their name you’d think they’re based in AZ, but they aren’t.)
I’m sorry if this was already mentioned, but I don’t have time to read all of the posts right now.
The nutrition facts label for the Sparkling Essential Energy Cucumber Lime says it has 10 calories per serving. It also says it has 9 grams of carbohydrates. That math doesn’t work. it either has at least 36 calories or less than 3 grams of carbs.
@Trinityscrew Sugar-alcohols like erythritol technically count as carbs even tho’ they’re not metabolizable and thus don’t count towards net calories. To determine net carbs (e.g. for a low-carb diet), subtract any fiber and sugar-alcohol grams from the total carbs.
I got a different flavor from a coworker which wasn’t bad, so I’m going to try the cucumber lime. That flavor Gatorade is the best. But leery from comments on the mango, I’d rather try one before buying in quantity.
At HEB today, I noticed that packets of Celcius drink mix are going for about the same per-serving price as these cans. They were in a weird spot in the store, over in Health & Beauty instead being with similar merch. Still way overpriced.
I prefer Fahrenheit… This is 'Murica, dammit!
@ircon96 Well in some states they are having real-life re-enactments of Fahrenheit 451, so you got that going for you, which is definitely NOT good!
@pmarin Amen! I prefer my Fahrenheit at 450 & below.
@ircon96 What if it’s served at -40?
@tweezak Anything’s better than 451! Of course, you see a lot of -40 I.Q.s among the people @pmarin was referencing.
@ircon96 @pmarin @tweezak I could have sworn I saw a sarcastic comment about efforts to ban porn here earlier - maybe deleted? Anyhow this was in today’s A.Word.A.Day:
@Kyeh That’s hilarious!
@Kyeh You are probably thinking of the comment I made about the long absence of 7-11 from Houston.
@werehatrack Oh yeah! I didn’t look far enough down. That was it, sure nuff.
https://meh.com/forum/topics/24-pack-celsius-performance-energy-drink-12oz-or-16oz#64121910d2a533121729ad78
Oh phew the temptation of that IRK was starting to get to me.
I’ve been drinking a lot of the cucumber lime at work because we had an expired case! It is surprisingly not terrible! A co-worker said it’s very good mixed with cranberry juice.
@mossygreen Probably even better mixed with gin or vodka.
But, work.
@phendrick There’s a Binny’s nearby…
@mossygreen
That’s the kind of recommendation I come to Meh for.
@blaineg @mossygreen “not terrible” is always a pleasant surprise.
I really miss Candy Corn and Speaker Docs…
@somf69 Those days were much knifer than now.
I was thinking just today that I needed a cold, refreshing drink. I pushed a lever and out came the most natural and refreshing drink known… ice cold water.
And then the boss came by and asked about the late report.
@hchavers Say you are building the suspense.
Cucumber?
@blaineg Yeah but the cucumber is better as a sexual aid. And for those using the non-vegetable meat product instead, there might be a watermelon coming out in 9 months.
Eww, sucralose on the mango ones
@Jamileigh17 Yeah, super disappointed they don’t have stevia like the other one. Otherwise I would definitely be signing up for the panic attack one of these would definitely give me
@Jamileigh17 And the other one has erythritol AND stevia - it must taste like drinking aluminum foil.
All the artificial sweeteners are too cloying for my palate. I’d rather have actual sugar. It tastes better, and if I’m already making the stupid choice to dump this much caffiene into my system, I might as well get to enjoy a sugar high along with it!
@Jamileigh17 As I’ve said here before, the only stevia I like is Stevia Nicks. But that sucralose is definitely not welcome.
At a buck a piece this is a great price for an energy drink. I got the Mango Tango last time & all I can say is they are ehem… not good. But it’s not like I drink these things for the taste anyhow. @tweezak In Japan you can get this:
@Kyeh @tweezak those are fantastic. Simple, subtle. Kinda unamerican. But tasty.
@Kyeh @tweezak What’s a Pocari, and is their sweat harvested in a sustainable and humane manner?
@blaineg @tweezak I don’t know.
@blaineg from Wikipedia:
M-bot wasn’t that helpful either, below.
@blaineg @Kyeh when I was in Japan for work I would buy Pocari Sweat at the 7-11 (yes they have those though I think the store name was purchased and not related to the US version). Pocari

@blaineg @Kyeh @pmarin @werehatrack In our town all the circle-k stores were turned into 7-11s a year or so back. Now we have lots of 7-11s.
Celsius - but sold in fl oz?
“with ingredients that aren’t the worst.” really selling it, Meh
The regular Celsius (cucumber lime in this offer) are my wife’s favorite. She finally quit drinking those nasty Diet Red Bulls! This is definitely a good deal BTW. As for the Heat (mango tango) one - I don’t know anything about that model of Celsius.

@KNmeh7 were they the same price?
@KNmeh7 @qazxto no they were 29.99 yesterday.
I don’t know who the ad writer for MEH products is, but it is brilliant!! The “sauciness” of the words is everything. Kudos to whoever wrote it!
Shame the cucumber causes blood clots
@melliott source?
@melliott @troy The Stevia (erythritol) might be problematic. https://health.clevelandclinic.org/erythritol/
@cpietra @melliott @troy Erythritol is added to some stevia products. Stevia itself just contains steviols.

@melliott read and watch this and see if you feel the same. I was worried as well being a stage IV cancer survivor but seems much more study is needed before knee jerk reactions…though it does warrant further investigation [https://peterattiamd.com/more-hype-than-substance-erythritol-and-cardiovascular-risk/]

Best essay I’ve read all day; really captured the essence of this abomination upon the American drug-scape. Bravo/a!

I had a stroke from not getting my diet coke fix
