The 2006 film by Zack Snyder was based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller, in turn based on a legendary account of the historic Battle of Thermopylae. Released during the Internet era, this means it was rich source for memes.
And according to legends, they really did throw that dude down a well. The Persian emissaries, accustomed to the Persian reputation preceding him, requested the token submission of Earth and Water from the Greeks. The Athenians executed the Persians sent to them, throwing them into a pit. Sparta cast them into a well, where they would find plenty of earth and water.

Incidentally, I always say “THIS… IS… SPARTAAA!!!” at the end of the Chain of Ascension Co-op mission in StarCraft II.
