@suprchunk well, I take no issue with harvesting feathers from fowl butchered for meat. I detest plucking feathers from live birds multiple times a year, forcing them to live a life of pain. We’re so much better than that.
@adamwesv Exactly why I would never buy down or feathers. I wish recycled down, like Patagonia uses, was more mainstream. Anything that extends the lifespan of the product and reduces overall consumption because, unfortunately, banning it seems unlikely to ever happen.
@adamwesv Thanks,for bringing that to my attention. I had no idea and I believe most of the people buying down products are just as clueless as I was. Too bad this post doesn’t have a broad following.
@adamwesv@bobhobard Very sad, but that is a 10 year old article. Is this (awful) practice still going on? One would hope RDS has gained momentum since then.
The comforter(?) is made with premium quality fine combed super soft prewashed cotton.
Yet the goose pillow has a microfiber cover. Goose is better, keeps its loft longer but it is the only one with microfiber. Read: https://theroundup.org/is-microfiber-toxic/
@craigcush
Oh wow, thanks, I hadn’t noticed that about the microfiber. Luckily my guy doesn’t care about that so I’m safe! And besides the pillowcase it’s also going to have a protective cover.
I don’t believe I knew about microfiber being toxic though…

“Dry clean preferred.” In all my years I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone taking pillows into or out of a dry cleaner shop. Dry cleaning is ineffective for water soluble-stains.
So, my daughters like “flat”/thin pillows. These look to be a touch thinner than most of the “fluffy” pillows I see online, but does anyone know if these style of pillows go flat quickly or not?
Something I learned a few months ago, is that “flat” pillows on Amazon are quite expensive as they seem to be niche compared to the oversized/fully adult pillows.
@Drez143 My guess is they will go flat. It’s only a guess because that is the problem I experience. I’m a side sleeper and need firm thick pillows. When I find one, they eventually go flat.
@pmarin it’s credible that they’d be made of 100% goose feather at this price. Now if they were made of goose down 80% or more and only a small amount feather? Then the price is well over 100 for decent quality these days.
Feather is not cheap, but still affordable. But to have just the down itself (the layer beneath the feather) with little or no feather at all? That has been absurdly expensive for a while now.
I have never bought products made/sold by NY&C, so I did a search and saw Trustpilot gave them a 1.1 score. And the original company went bankrupt and is now owned by Saardi? Kind of concerns me about quality.
While concerned, I’ve had feather pillows before and they were ok but kept getting quills sticking me through its case. Yet, today I still liked the idea of having pillows this way, so kept doing research. One of the memories I have was how they tended to condense over time but I had no experience or interest in looking into fixing them back then - I was much younger.
Now we have the blessed and cursed internet, where you can find something on anything, but have to sift through the ____ to derive a better (and hopefully), fuller and correct grasp. So I came upon this gem:
Methods for Restoring Polyester Pillow Loft:
The Dryer Method (Most Effective): Place one or two polyester pillows in the dryer with two or three clean tennis balls (each placed inside a sock to prevent scuffing) or wool dryer balls. Run the dryer on low heat or air fluff for 20–30 minutes.
Manual Hand-Fluffing: Hold the pillow by opposite corners and shake it vigorously for 30 seconds. Then, grab the other two corners and repeat.
The “Accordion” Technique: Hold the pillow on both sides and alternate between squeezing the ends together and pulling them apart to pull air into the fibers.
Sunlight & Airing: Hang the pillows outside on a sunny, dry day for 2-3 hours. Sunlight helps the polyester fill expand and kills bacteria.
And then for feather pillows:
The Accordion/Manual Method: Hold the pillow by opposite sides and rapidly squeeze and release, working your way around the pillow to force air back into the feathers.
The Dryer Method (Deep Fluff): Place the pillow in a dryer on low heat or air-fluff for 15–20 minutes. Add 2–3 dryer balls or clean tennis balls (can be placed in clean socks) to act as a beating mechanism, breaking up compacted feathers.
The Daily Shake: Every morning, hold the pillow at one corner and shake it vigorously, then repeat with the other corner to redistribute the fill.
Sunlight Refresh: Place pillows in direct sunlight for an hour. The sun helps dry out moisture that causes feathers to clump while killing bacteria.
Massage Technique: If lumps exist, put the pillow on a flat surface and use your hands to massage and break apart the clumps of feathers.
You all be the judge of what type of pillows you choose but these methods (squeezing, beating, bouncing balls, heating, shaking, and my favorite, massaging) are there to choose from when your pillow becomes flaccid like …
My old goose down pillows are amazing, the reason that they are old, very old is that I now know how the down feathers are harvested. If you like animal torture, look at a video.
If you only knew how they “harvested” those feathers. Just think of ripping your eyelashes out your entire life over and over again but MUCH worse. Let’s do better.

If it’s not down, I’m not down…
@jonnycaliente preach it brother.
Disappointed that “Poly” is not feathers from that old parrot that was always angling for crackers.
‘John’ on Amazon is not a fan, out of a very small sampling https://a.co/d/0cHhQKrD
@digerifoo2 wasn’t kidding about a “very small sampling”. It’s a sample size of one.
@digerifoo2 Sounds like the feather pillows of childhood. Feathers are quite different from down!
The poly for me as I have a feather allergy. Breathing I know is overrated but I’ve kinda gotten used to it.
@ironcheftoni Same
@ironcheftoni Ha! Check out the lightweight who can’t handle not breathing!

@craigcush goose down is better than duck down. Feathers are feathers.
@craigcush @mattig88 All of the feather pillows have a cotton cover. We had microfiber cover listed by mistake and it has been corrected

My guy has been wanting his old goose feather filled pillow replaced so this is perfect!

That was a favorite scene, poor Kevin!
Pretty sure we’ve ALL had those kinds of days…
So, my daughters like “flat”/thin pillows. These look to be a touch thinner than most of the “fluffy” pillows I see online, but does anyone know if these style of pillows go flat quickly or not?
Something I learned a few months ago, is that “flat” pillows on Amazon are quite expensive as they seem to be niche compared to the oversized/fully adult pillows.
@Drez143 I also like “flatter” pillows…I hope someone knows before I take the plunge on these.
@batness @Drez143 I have feather pillows (not these) and they do seem to flatten pretty well. You can put them in the dryer to fluff them back up too.
@Drez143 My guess is they will go flat. It’s only a guess because that is the problem I experience. I’m a side sleeper and need firm thick pillows. When I find one, they eventually go flat.
@Drez143 Most shredded memory foam pillows let you add/remove filling.
How is it that the duck/goose feathers have to be dry cleaned, but the goose down is ok to machine wash?
Kudos on the write-ups because they were overall good and made me laugh TWICE. Particularly -
and
So… the Goose Down Double Quilted
Are 100% Goose feather?
@pmarin They are Goose Feather

Oddity in the SideDeal sheet set listing that is the banner ad today: Thread count is “2.” Not 200, just 2.
It’s 2026 and we are still torturing defenseless animals for their feathers
that’s shitty
I have never bought products made/sold by NY&C, so I did a search and saw Trustpilot gave them a 1.1 score. And the original company went bankrupt and is now owned by Saardi? Kind of concerns me about quality.
I’ve never hit MEH faster

I generally used the dryer and tennis shoe method. Works pretty well.

Goose feathers?
Duck feathers?
I prefer Horse Feathers!
