Two of my kiddos agree with your wife. They love the Marie calendars pot pies. It kills my soul a little but it’s so much easier when we have sports and I’m in the shop or yard all day.
@sillyheathen The truly sad part is that before Marie died, those pot pies were truly amazing. Today, they’re merely “not horrible”, while most of their competition runs the gamut from “meh” to “insultingly laughable”. The monster $20 bake-it-yourself one from Costco is still really good, but I don’t get one very often because it’s a trifle pricey. Still, I feel like I’m a lot closer to getting my money’s worth with the Costco version that any of the freezer-case ones. (But for pot pie nirvana, the ticket is the hot-deli takeaway version from the Phoenicia grocery in downtown Houston. Nothing else even comes close.)
@sillyheathen@werehatrack
I can’t stand the frozen pot pies but one I make from scratch (they’re so easy to make) are so yummy. I don’t know why I don’t like the frozen ones, I haven’t had one since I’ve been a kid, something about them just makes me cringe. The Costco ones are pricy but if I’m there and have nothing planned for dinner I pick one up bc it will feed us for a few days.
@jkawaguchi
Kraft spirals all the way. It has to be the spirals for me, they taste better. My boyfriend will buy Kroger brand mac and cheese and gets mad that I won’t eat it but it has different taste.
@Star2236
Agreed! The knockoffs never capture that special taste! I buy boxes and save the noodles for something else so I can make the cheese sauce to dress huge baked potatoes with broccoli and ham/ bacon! Great fast dinner with or without the meat.
Ice Cream!!! It started it’s life as a corner ice cream store by the high school. Dad would guiltily go up there and buy some and sneak it into the house. Of course once it is there mom couldn’t do anything about that. Very good ice cream. Then it was sold to 7-11, and then to United Farmer’s dairy. I still buy it when I am back home.
@Kidsandliz
Nice!
I was a franchisee for Breslers for a few years with my father-in-law. Our friends loved to be able to go by the mall after closing and open up the cases and go to town.
I’m not sure I understand the question.
Most of my food comes ordered or purchased from a store.
My diet and habits haven’t changed in the last five decades; more often, the manufacturer has shuttered their stock (so no more Ralston’s or Dolly Madison).
My consumption may have slowed, but it doesn’t mean I’ve stopped eating Twinkles and Snowballs entirely.
Hamburgers, hotdogs, grits, Cereal, nearly anything Chocolate, yes there are a few exceptions!
I have added a standard salad w/ olive oil as the dressing, tuna/ chicken salad,
@aetris
I just started trick or treating again with my nephew, it’s been one of the greatest joys of my life. I get to dress up and people give me free candy.
@aetris@Star2236
I’ve already started seeing Halloween crap for sale. Kind of blows my mind… Passee a display with mellocream pumpkins in it today at my local Walmart.
Peanut butter and jelly. I still make it for dinner when I’m feeling meh or I’m too pooped to make anything. Add some chips and you got a meal. I get fancy with different kinds of jams and jelly’s. Sometimes it’s a triple stacker if I’m really hungry but still just as satisfying as when I was a kid. I feel bad for kids now days with all the peanut allergies that they can’t have pb&j at school. That was the ultimate school for any age.
I took this to mean a prepared entre or meal, not ingredients.
Stouffers Lasagna. Still love this stuff but its a rare treat
Canned raviolis. Mom used to get #10 cans from Smart and Final Iris (an early warehouse style place); I still get Chef Boyardee once in a while. Good plain and also makes a neat sandwich.
@duodec
Chef Boyardee ravioli was one of mom’s favorite things. Ate my share of it serving lunch for her but never was super fond of it. A bit too sweet for my taste.
@chienfou My Mom also bought #10 cans of pudding from Smart and Final Iris. Opening up one of those (lemon pudding! Yummm!!!) was a real treat because it meant a few days of premium desserts.
I luvs me bagels, but they are not as good as when I got the FROZEN Lender’s Bagels and put them in the broiler of the oven. Most standard issue bagels are bready these daze, which is fine.
Edit: Ok, the frozen Lender’s still exist. Just gotta find 'em.
While they are almost but not quite completely unlike a real bagel, the Aldi Hawaiian Bagels are very tasty, and I toast them in the frying pan with butter before applying the required schmear. The stuff I loved as a kid seems less attractive now, although I’d probably eat Cheerios if I had them. I was weird. I didn’t like the sugar-encrusted stuff. I would happily eat shredded wheat with warm milk and a little cinnamon.
@werehatrack
When I was growing up our access to “sugar bomb” style cereals was limited to the weekends. Most of it was consumed dry from a plastic cup sitting in front of the TV watching cartoons waiting for Mom and Dad to wake up.
As for shredded wheat, I love the stuff. OTOH warm milk is definitely not my thing. I can’t think of any beverages that I prefer warm. I want my hot drinks hot and my cold drinks cold. I’ve made the exception for Guinness when I’m over the pond.
@chienfou@werehatrack My wife eats a bowl of (original plain) Cheerios topped with dried cranberries (AKA Craisins)

@sillyheathen Don’t feel bad. It’s a lot healthier than what most kids get for dinner.

@jkawaguchi @Star2236 Well even Kraft isn’t what it used to be – which I guess is a good thing because their cheese powder was anything but cheese!
FWIW, I’ll mix in a can of chili with my mac and cheese.

What brand…?
@chienfou Originally it was called Franklin’s and we lived less than a mile from the original store.
