Anyone seen these in person? What are the “replaceable cartridges” and “sponge sticks” for? I would be interested if they are junk after a year because I have to buy unattainable cartridges or sponge sticks
@BelleGunness IIRC, last time they were on sale, someone mentioned that they figured out how to (or thought they could) make their own DIY replacements. @Kyeh is really good at finding old listings, maybe she could see if she can pull up the one that had that discussion? (I tried googling it to see if there was an instructional video, but nothing came up except QVC sales pitches.)
@BelleGunness@Kyeh Hey, i recognize game when i see it! Lol… Maybe that was it, but the weird “sponge stick” concept was what stuck with me. I might have conflated the two technologies – i AM self-diagnosed as senile, after all.
@BelleGunness@ircon96 Well, THAT’S a misdiagnosis for sure. But all I could find searching these was the same info from that one previous sale. (I guess being the daughter of a librarian helped me develop good ferreting-out-info skills, maybe?)
My guess is that these use something similar to these devices: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRYT43Z9?psc=1&ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_ct_3913XEFHHWAWFWBJEY5G
I bought a set of these to play with, and the cylindrical white thing is a wick (sponge) that delivers water to the piezoelectric atomizer that vibrates at an annoying frequency similar to that emitted by plasma lighters. I am old and blessedly can no longer hear these, but my 30-something offsprings can, and they drive my dogs nuts. I suspect that the “candles” in this item will emit a similarly annoying high frequency sound.
The warnings about using only filtered water should state you should only use DISTILLED water, as atomizing tap water with all of its chemo-metallic finery is a very bad idea long-term.
Having said all of that, I am fascinated as to how these “candles” are able to aim an LED straight up into the also-straight-up mist generated by whatever is generating it. Seems to me like the LED would get in the way of the misting device or the other way around. Perhaps it uses a translucent tube curved so that the LED can be placed directly below the final upwards path of the mist. Some experimentation and 3D printing is needed, and I am just the sort of person that will likely waste time trying…
But, I am not buying these.

Not worth it without a remote. I’m too lazy to get up to turn them on and off.

@BelleGunness @ircon96
Thanks for the compliment - I think those were for another kind of candle though, one that does have a flame and uses fuel. With this I think the inner things are to make mist to give the illusion of smoke - but I’m just guessing.
