@eeterrific absolutely, I worked in a greenhouse, we snuck one into the storage house and it was filled with fruitflys, it was like a machine gun going off. Extremely effective
@buteyn@eeterrific Fantastic! We have a bunch of them after leaving a bag of potatoes in the pantry (no, it didn’t kill anyone) and going away for a month. Apple cider vinegar, Dawn soap, a little sugar and plastic wrap got some of them but I think those that are left are on “Seriously nasty bugger” level.
@buteyn@eeterrific@venussuz I vacuum fruit flies out of the air with a wand. BUT THEN!!! you need to go outside to liberate them or dump the vac or they will escape your vacuum cleaner over a coiple of hours and you will have accomplished nothing.
So a bat managed to get inside the house and was flying around the room. Thinking of the best way to get it out. We tried capturing it in a box but freaked out too much. So we used one of these from the last time they were sold. One swipe and zap! Bat fell to the floor and started crawling around. Of course managed to crawl under the couch and smallest places. Eventually managed to grab it using an oven mitt. Tossed it way back outside.
TLDR
These can stun unwanted bats inside.

@lilsrm123 When there’s a bat it’s best to call animal control, especially if you don’t know for absolutely positively sure it didn’t bite anyone. Their teeth are so tiny they can bite you and you don’t feel it.
I had one in my house last week, and the officer who came to deal with it scared the living bejeesus out of me with her what-ifs.
@lilsrm123@qazxto Definitely. “My” bat was captured, euthanized, and tested, and came up negative, so luckily my family don’t have to go through the prophylaxis shots.
@kostia@lilsrm123@Lynnerizer@qazxto Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Rabies is one of (if not the only) viruses that is absolutely* deadly once you show symptoms. That’s why animals that bite humans are either quarantined or euthanized and sent for testing while the rabies protocol is started.
There have been a handful of cases where the subject has survived getting rabies. It’s not really reproducible, most of the survival claims have been proved false and the one or two that might be true the quality of life for the survivor is pretty terrible. You can search on Youtube for a video of someone going through Rabies in the 50s or so - It’s pretty terrible.
I bought 2 of these devices the last time & still have one in the box, ,but though I ain’t decided if I’ll get 2 more, I Will say I really like the tennis racket,…I mean the fly swatter I’m using on moths, gnats & anything that flies. It does scare the fn cat a bit, but it IS extremely Awesome!! I’m thinking of gifting the other 1, but I may now keep it & buy 2 more to gift; the might want one simply to scare itself with!! My Advice: If you don’t have these babies, go ahead & buy at least one set!
They work for carpenter bees too, but you have to come up from underneath when they are hovering so that their little bee legs dangle into the wires, and… ZAP! The big bees are a bit too rotund to make electrical contact if you just swat them in the traditional manner.
It’s pretty satisfying, but it’s not as satisfying as picking them out of the sky with a Red Ryder (without putting your eye out). Depending on how good a shot you are that can be an afternoon’s fun or a weekend’s frustration.
I almost forgot the most fun thing for flies: the Bug-A-Salt. It’s a pump shotgun you load with table salt (although I go for the kosher salt) and shoot flies to bits.
I have a 3 dollar Harbor Freight version of this device. It isn’t rechargeable. It uses “D” cells.
I will say that they work. If you swat a bug you will fry it. But I’ll also say that swinging these things around maniacally in an effort to hit that bug might result in collateral damage. (I really miss my Winnie the Pooh honey jar.)
Bought a pair of these last time. They work great, and I especially like the lit night mode, though the intermittent ZZZAP! noises can be startling at first.
We have pet parrots, so we have pantry moths from their seed. These are fantastic, another level above the Harbor Freight racquets altogether. It took the birds a few days to stop cowering from the sights and sounds, now they are amused to! Very effective and recommended!
I bought these the last time they were offered (happily for the same price, I might add). I am a big fan of racquet zappers, and have owned quite a few over the years. I’m just going to give a little warning… these ones are brutal and shocking (no pun intended) when electrocuting a bug. I was so startled the first time, and still continue to be, even though now I know what to expect, because the sound and intensity of the zap is so intense, even for the tiniest of insects. That being said, the bugs don’t seem to die any faster than with my older, drastically calmer racquets. I did try testing to see on some flies, and amount of time seemed the same to me. I don’t know why these are made to be so much noisier and scarier, and producing such more aggressive sparks, etc. for what seems to take the same amount of time to do it’s job. With my older ones, I can kill a bug, and everyone in the household isn’t aware of the murder being committed on the other side of the home. I think if my windows were open, even my nextdoor neighbors may be able to hear it. Lol It actually reminds me of when I was young, my father used to leave an outside bug zapper on overnight and my neighbors would complain that it would wake them. I think anything larger than a fly would probably sound and feel like a bit like firecrackers going off. Even the fly was a lot. Luckily I only kill bugs as a last resort. If I can in any way get the bug out of my house alive and well, I do that, which is usually easier with larger bugs, but I have never felt actually nervous the times when I did have to zap one, until now.
Bottom line… I absolutely dread killing bugs with this thing, and it will be kept in a place where it is less likely to be needed. I will keep my old one’s for downstairs closer to the outside doors. I will definitely be giving my spare, unopened one away, with a warning and possibly a note of apology.
I got these last time and love them. It is a step above other racquets due to the option to “Leave on” without pressing the thumb button. If you’re skiddish around large bugs you can simply drop this onto the bug (i.e. I’ve had quick jumping cave crickets in the basement and garage but I toss this zapper onto the bugger sandwiched on the floor and with it always on, watch it zap crackle and pop to a smoky demise from a distance to also avoid inhaling the smoke. It may take a few zaps for large crickets if you dont use this method. Buy this!
Bought on 9/1. Just wondering they will get here before the bumper crop of Mosquitos are gone… 9/8. It’s like buying from Meh makes the packages a surprise because by the time it gets here, I forgot what I bought… Hmmm.
Not what I expected. Mosquitos aren’t our problem here, but I often use a charged swatter for other types of bugs, especially carpenter bees. I’ll try it for those though. You never know.
I am camping at a music festival this weekend, and this thing is the BEST. Not only does it take out an invasive spotted lantern fly with one strike, I’ve been walking around and watching bands with it turned on, and bugs just suicide on it instead of biting me! I only wish I’d brought both of them.
The first one I opened is still going strong, zapping gnats and whatever daily. I just set up the other one in the garage last night, went and checked it this morning and it has no power. Plugged into outlet - check. USB plugged into wall socket - check. USB plugged into swatter - check. And nothing. Is there any kind of return for this?

Will these kill Fruit Flies? (Apple flies?)
@eeterrific Just the Apple flies that have a Lightning connector.

@venussuz I don’t bother with the plastic wrap. I just leave an open bowl with the AC vinegar and Dawn and let the little buggers have a field day.
@buteyn @eeterrific @venussuz I vacuum fruit flies out of the air with a wand. BUT THEN!!! you need to go outside to liberate them or dump the vac or they will escape your vacuum cleaner over a coiple of hours and you will have accomplished nothing.
These work surprisingly well
Is this what Babe Ruth used?
@phendrick Oh, I get it. The Sultan of Swat.
@Trinityscrew
These don’t work well om insects that crawl on the wall. It probably doesn’t make good margaritas either.

If you wake up with a bat in your room recommended to start rabies vaccines series. Generally special order so call doctor before just showing up.
@lilsrm123 @qazxto Definitely. “My” bat was captured, euthanized, and tested, and came up negative, so luckily my family don’t have to go through the prophylaxis shots.
@kostia @lilsrm123 @qazxto
Are you serious about jumping right into the whole rabies protocol? Can you REALLY not feel a bat bite?
@kostia @lilsrm123 @Lynnerizer @qazxto Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Rabies is one of (if not the only) viruses that is absolutely* deadly once you show symptoms. That’s why animals that bite humans are either quarantined or euthanized and sent for testing while the rabies protocol is started.
These have redefined my relationship with bugs. I can’t recommend this enough - I bought some for friends. Great for mosquitoes.
It takes some commitment to zap a housefly though - they get stunned and get up if you’re not going in for round two.
@bmajazz
I’ve got a few different versions of these. I like the ones that spark with a snap when you get the bug. These do that.
@plymouthdave
I’ve always thought the juicier bugs/insects zapped the loudest!
The thicker the bug/insect the louder the zap!

PANS! GLANDS! CRAYONS! AWESOME!
What the hell. I have a camping trip coming up.

@kostia (it took four giphys to get one that wasn’t just a ridiculous clip from a horror movie and I don’t understand why at all)

It’s a bit pricy, but it’s a blast. You might also try this budget version I saw at Walmart.

I think I still want these for mosquitoes. Ballistic attacks are impractical at their size.
@djslack all I can think of are the resulting bug guts spewed around the home. No thanks.
Where were these when I was thirteen? Maybe that little boy can still have fun today.
I bought a set the last time these were on offer and my wife lives to swat bugs with them now. Moths, mosquitos, flies, fruit flies, doesn’t matter

@GirlPleeeeze Very good review, but I feel torn between the goal of Zen harmony and the brutal reality of insectelectrocution,
Looks like a pervertable to me.
These things are like the electric chair for flies. I caught one and manically kept pressing the button watching the fly wiggle and start to smoke.

Ha! I came in to see what the day’s item was and remembered I wanted to buy these bug zappers. Northern Minnesota. Mosquitoes. yada yada.
I had 15 seconds to do it and Meh was not loading when I pressed the button. It kicked in and I got it with 1 second to spare.
Felt like I was buying an IRK. My little heart was a pounding by the time I got done.
@Dakini Congratulations!
I wanted to get more of these but I forgot yesterday
Imagine my surprise when I saw the “buy it” button this morning!

Missed it… but it’s on side deal!
I got this for my wife and, despite a tepid reaction at first, it’s now her “favorite thing”. When she goes outside I hear bugs exploding every time.
