Onew that’s functional and properly calibrated will give a so-so- approximation of core temp on must people. They’re useful for fast screening - sort of. If it says you’ve got a fever, it’s not kidding; if it says you don’t, it might be wrong as long as it’s low-greade. I typically run about 95.4F at the forehead, 96 to 96.5 oral. Recent research has determined that “normal” is not the same figure for everyone, but a range from around 95 to 99.
I wasn’t aware that “HD LCD” displays still looked like calculator and Casio watches from the 80s … I mean the colour-shift backlight is neat, but I could achieve a similar effect by gently destroying the backlight on my watch with some pressure on that too. Like 30 years(ish) ago.
As to utility, if they function even marginally well, this seems like a decent way to have something with good ease-of-use, visual feedback with the colour coding, and easily replaceable batteries (Yes, I like rechargeable as well, for others who want to avoid many of the micro-USB things, it’s easier this way since companies seem slow to adopt USB-C. Also, I just use Eneloops for things like this in my house.)… I could see buying some at this price.
Was about to pull the trigger, then saw them at Groupon for $7.55. Don’t now how trustworthy their rating system is. Rated high but saw quite a few bad reviews too.
All the made-in-China, mass-market, quick-read thermometers are $πi±, giving wildly inaccurate readings, and usually failing completely in 0-7 days. Quality control in many of their factories, especially for small cheap items like this, is nonexistent. In addition, the presence of a “fever” can usually be detected with a hand on the forehead, like Mom used to do. If you need an exact number, get a digital, oral thermometer like they use in doctors’ offices & hospitals.
These are going to work perfect for calibrating our testing instruments for the next NASA manned launch. Obviously the second unit will be our control/test of the accuracy of the first. The colors worked out perfect— red, white and blue per presidential orders.
@zfigz Measuring temp on the forehead is often low, and some of us run at a normal temp well below 98.6F to begin with. I passed the no-fever test back at New Year’s despite having a dose of the plague, and that was with an old mercury oral thermometer. Absence of fever does not equate to absence of plague, and presence of fever means you have a higher likelihood of being positive, but it’s not proof of plague by itself.

So you can yell “Freeze!” when seeing if they’re too hot
Whip this out when he says you look hot…
@werehatrack
@phendrick @werehatrack I’m fairly sure that second picture, the album cover, gave me a fever! I’m old… but not dead!
Hmm… @yakkoTDI must have the night off. Odd.
@guybrush01 Or he fell asleep on the couch after a 14 hour day at work.
Remember the hot and cold game? Yeah, me neither. But, you wanna cheat?
Congratulations, Citizen. You are within the required temperature range.
Answer: My ex In bed.
@brubro so, y’all don’t still hang out?!
Good to see you guys getting out in front of this whole Covid thingy. Temperature guns, just in the nick of time.
@Hittman almost made me spit out my porridge!
I would like to know the measurement range for surfaces. I need a new one for checking my 3D printer.
@Jonas4321 From the specs:
From what little I know, that range doesn’t include temperatures 3D print tuners are interested in.
Interesting that the link to Clenera is clenerahealth.com/shop/p/mudcloth-and-wool-blanket…
@monkeyman0510 Also interesting how minimalist that website is.
What if you want to measure an analog forehead?
I’m not checking if Tron has a fever.
Don’t tell thermom the babysitter’s temperature exceeded 100°

Um…These are not really rectal thermometers?? My wife now has some explaining to do. I don’t feel so bad that I can’t “Take it like a Man!”…

Do you know the difference between an oral and a rectal thermometer? The taste…

these are shite
we have covid and didn’t know we had a fever as it provides a temp that 2-3 degrees lower. crap / regret buying.
