@wilder_raven thanks. The previous three or four comments I read were very much down on these. This is almost exactly what I was thinking of these for. I got one of the Vanko projectors recently with the idea of watching movies on our garage door. As soon as I saw these I thought it would be a great match.
@wilder_raven After my sophomore year in college, although I was poor, sound quality was extremely important to my young [and less damaged] ears, so I lusted for a pair of AR speakers, but couldn’t outright afford them.
They were amazing, because aside from Klipsch, which were more able to avoid distortion at higher sound pressures volumes [hence at least in part my hearing loss], they had the best, most balanced, and crisp sound reproduction I had ever heard- every single model I had ever listened to.
I had also listened to a lot other brands.
They ended up being the first thing I ever took out a loan for, which surprisingly, I never regretted.
I used them to DJ at dorm parties for the rest of my undergrad years in college, and the money I made paid off the loan.
When I got married, I traded them in on the more family-house-friendly subwoofer and bookshelf speakers we still have, but I still have a ton of respect [and some nostalgia] for the AR name and their design ethic.
All that is to say- I’m in for a pair!
My parents have one of these for their lake cottage - this thing is pretty big - and loud - the battery lasts forever. Its impressive IMO -I think Im going to spring for a pair
I wish they are Apple Airplay capable like the Libratone Zipp.I still have AR speakers and an AR turntable from the 80’s and the still rock! Of course those were the ARs that were made in the USA, not sure about these.
@MINUANO68 The AR brand was sold to Jensen in '89, which got sold to Recoton in '96, which then got sold to VOXX (formerly Audiovox) in '03, so now it’s just a captive brand with no relation to its origins, coasting on the residual good will and reputation from those origins.
My wireless speakers scattered about the house are from AR and I love them. Sound great and work well even at a distance from the transmitter. Don’t really need these for the pool (have a wired set for that space already) or would have to seriously consider these.

Will you take $35 for them?
Maybe if there was a knife built in
@CraigDanger username checks out
Unless this is a demand I’m unaware of (which happens from time to time) I know what people are getting in their next IRKs…
These are crappy speaker docks.
I had a pair of these from the same company without the lights a few years ago. Were great for back yard movie nights. Pretty good sound actually.

@sflesch @wilder_raven
I wouldn’t trust 90% of the comments made on these threads - unless the commenter has actually used the thing I always assume it’s just smartassery.
@Kyeh @wilder_raven I think subconsciously I did not put much stock in those comments since there were few of any details.

Quiet riot, come on see the noize
Are these the dog barking speakers my neighbor always has on?

@MINUANO68 @SubGothius
see “Bell & Howell” “Polaroid” for further examples.
@MINUANO68 yeah I have the libratone zipp and it’s pretty good, especially for the meh price.

I don’t know…I played the sample video and they sound the same as the speaker in my laptop.
@fritzo2162 - I hear what you did there.
@ashemo @fritzo2162 when I was growing up, it would say “brought to you in living color, on NBC” but it was black-and-white on the TV my parents had.
@pmarin
I well remember those days!
“You can lead a horse to water…”
@ashemo @fritzo2162 @chienfou @pmarin And the peacock was animated. “Living” my ass!
@ashemo @fritzo2162 @macromeh @pmarin

and lest we forget…
@chienfou @fritzo2162 @macromeh @pmarin - and the Star Spangled Banner just before this.
@ashemo @fritzo2162 @macromeh @pmarin
Yep. Seeing/hearing these generally meant I stayed up way past my bedtime!
I have Alexa devices outside that get ruined every year. So if these were Alexa compatible vs just BLE I would buy. Does anyone know?
Easy way to make Alexas rainproof, put in bread bag, fold extra length of bag under speaker, been doing this for 7 years no issues.
They look like imitation oil lamps with flames, sound like cheap Bluetooth speakers, and cost like real antique street lamps.
@hchavers …and you came about your [presumed] opinion re: their sound quality exactly how?
Inquiring minds, etc…
