@narfcake Anyone in the market for a budget bulbs like these won’t likely be prioritizing CRI (or other colour render measurements, some of which are more relevant). However, it is a good point in the weaknesses of LEDs, even years after they’ve mostly supplanted CFLs (variable and mixed CRIs), and my beloved old halogens (CRI of 96 with my favourite models).
For those who do care, GE Reveal HD+ is a great family of LED bulbs that are commonly available. I have purchased a few boxes recently at my local club warehouse from the Walton empire at a surprisingly reasonable price. They are great for kitchen and bathrooms, where you really want to be able to distinguish colours clearly and accurately.
These serve a purpose, and have an audience; Just not for me. I would want both higher CRI, and I prefer a much cooler temperature for most uses, but that’s for my house. Pick what you can afford, and does well enough for you!
I really want quality E12 base lights with a huge light output. GE makes a 40 watt equivalent, and it’s nice, but if I could get 60-80 equivalent in my ceiling fans I would be super happy.
@joeywolf, you’re wrong Joey every electrical engineer, and their dog know that for every three people, six will know less thana 5th grader, n math. I ain’t igknowrent, ya no. I went two kallege four for yrs, so, I ain’t know dummy!!
“Scientists from the U.S. and Europe warn that LED lights could be doing more harm than good: A 2012 Spanish study found that LED radiation can cause irreversible damage to the retina.”
@caffeineguy I purchased these from Meh when Meh had somewhat good deals. I have used them in dimmable fixtures with no problems, including no flickering.
@caffeineguy@haydesigner That’s actually still a function of the switch itself regarding compatibility with the bulb. Different bulbs work better with different brands of switches. It’s a big issue nobody really cares about for some reason. The more recent switches have better compatibility but if you’ve got an LED compliant switch that’s a bit older, all bets are off.
None of the rest of what folks are whining about bothers me, but I want something I can plug in and in a few minutes be telling Google how to control it.
I used a simple motion sensor switch for the hallway and didn’t bother with smart switches for the bathrooms or utility rooms, but I installed smart switches for most of the rooms in my house. I can use whatever bulbs I want. If I’m buying LED I make sure they are dimmable, but smart switches are the way to go.
@Trinityscrew That’s cool and all, but 1) I’m renting and 2) I’m just not that guy. I used to think I secretly was, but I’m not. I admire y’all, but if I can’t just screw in the lightbulb and push a few buttons or justify hiring someone to do it, it’s probably not gonna happen.
These are good general replacement bulbs for fixtures with multiple lights, like ceiling fans and candelabras. The single bulb lamp in the dark corner needs something else, if you don’t want a dark corner that is.
They are starting to get full glass LEDs in the marketplace. I’ve not been a fan of the bottom 1/3 white plastic part.
The full-glass don’t have the shadow at the bulb base (and they actually are using glass).
@G1
I’ll be happy when they start building in a useful level of heat dissipation, heat tolerance, and component durability in the power supply circuitry. And that hasn’t happened yet.
@werehatrack Simple to do all of this, but not for cheap. Might need a fan to get true longevity out of the bulbs. Nobody wants bulbs with fans in the house. Probably.
Thanks @G1, I didn’t look closely enough to see that at first. Same here - I have lamps and ceiling suspended fixtures (vs can lights), and I don’t want the bottom half of a bulb to be dark unless it’s a floodlight, in a can, or otherwise has the bottom half hidden. I’ve replaced most of my downward-facing bulbs, which are mostly in the basement and garage, with tubes - some 3500 lumens for $10 and some 6000 lumens for $15 from Rural King. These may be good for outdoor floodlights where the bottom is in a cone anyway - except that I want security lights to be bright white and not warm white.
On another note, it seems somebody here is taking a page from the original site’s playbook - lumping multiple items of different prices together and listing a range, so we don’t know what the actual prices are on each of them until we click Buy.
A box could be $12, or it could be $34, you just don’t know until you click. At least this doesn’t vary from $5 to $2500 like I’ve seen some sales at the original site.
Good for bedroom fixtures, warm white, normal brightness (60W). At $1/bulb, we’re reaching the old incandescent prices. Not bad, Meh. I’m disappointed that I’m not disappointed in this offer.

@gallogj The cheaper they are, the less durable the power control circuitry tends to be, in my experience. But expensive ones often can fail just as soon.
I ordered 2 of the exact same 12 led bulbs, but what I got was 2 different color bulbs. Both of the ones I ordered where soft white and what I got was 1 order soft white and the other day light. It’s not even close in color so I can’t use them together. Please let me know if this happened to anyone else. Thank you, Steve

WATT?! Watt kind of deal is this?
@yakkoTDI Not one to filament with excitement.
@yakkoTDI You’re not amped up for it?
@mebisping @yakkoTDI Not part of my current plans, but maybe I’ll lose my resistance, once I’m illuminated by some damned EMFer.
@mebisping @phendrick @yakkoTDI Well these bulbs are a dim idea
@yakkoTDI It’s a very lite deal & a bit shady, too!!
Look at those cans! I like em cheap and dumb. No smart bulbs for me. Don’t tell my wife…
I wonder how many mehmbers will be complaining about the 80 CRI …

Hmm. 2700K is too yellow for my taste. Meh.
@The_Tim good catch. 2700k is way too yellow.
@alose @The_Tim I actually prefer the warm light for the most part, maybe especially while working or watching TV.
@The_Tim agreed…I find 3000 to be much better to my eyes
@The_Tim Thanks for this! I couldn’t remember if the higher numbers were warmer or the lower. I bought them because we prefer a warm light.
Who’s bright idea was this one?!?!?
Est. Yearly Cost: $1.08
Equiv. Yearly Cost: $7.23
Yearly Savings: $6.14
So, it’s true, what they say: 5 out of 4 Americans can’t do simple math!
@joeywolf
I think they put figures into a spreadsheet and let it round off to two decimal places. That’s rounding error territory.

“Scientists from the U.S. and Europe warn that LED lights could be doing more harm than good: A 2012 Spanish study found that LED radiation can cause irreversible damage to the retina.”
@joeywolf yeah… gunna need to see an actual link for that one.
@joeywolf LED lights made me stronger and full of stamina.
@joeywolf Isn’t LED radiation what created the Incredibly Energy Efficient Hulk?
@haydesigner @joeywolf https://health.clevelandclinic.org/are-led-lights-damaging-your-retina/#:~:text=A 2012 Spanish study found,for age-related macular degeneration. but in the next paragraph, we’re told that the jury is still out: “We haven’t had a marker of structural damage to the retina from these lighting technologies. So right now, we can’t recommend that people stop using them.”
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5313540/ might be the study being talked about?
@joeywolf, why didn’t the warning come from the Spaniards¿?
Anyone know if these flicker at all when dimmed, or worse, make noise when dimmed?
@caffeineguy I very much could be wrong, but I think that has more to do with the switches than the bulbs themselves.
@haydesigner If you don’t have a modern CFL/LED dimmer, yeah, all bets are off, but if you do, many ‘dimmable’ bulbs still dim really poorly.
@caffeineguy I purchased these from Meh when Meh had somewhat good deals. I have used them in dimmable fixtures with no problems, including no flickering.

Store brand BR30s are $20 for 8 at Walton Mart.

No value judgment there. Just FYI.
If it’s dimmable, I’m going to want more than 60 watts for the peak.
None of the rest of what folks are whining about bothers me, but I want something I can plug in and in a few minutes be telling Google how to control it.

I somewhat anticipated this response.

@joelmw @Trinityscrew you’re really bringing me down man. Sheesh, like a cloud over a kids birthday party.

Bulbs!
@phelmurh, Glass Bulbs!!
“And so, in conclusion, you must buy these bulbs right now.”
I should prefer not to. 2700K is just not on.
And who is Tim Duncan, and why would I know?
@werehatrack GOAT Power Forward.

What is the color temp? Are they blue?
@jwnelson 2700K, so more warm white or yellow.

$1 per bulb can be found a dollar tree. Huge pass.

Recieved the 100 watt bulbs very brite and dim perfect, so great deal at about 50% off
