Air It Out

I don’t about where you live, but here in Central Iowa we just can’t get enough of the 80s and 90s! No, I’m not just referring to yesterday’s 90s-inspired write-up. I’m talking temperatures. Summer took no time jumping the shark from perfect-for-a-deck-beer weather, straight into I-checked-the-mail-and-now-I-need-to-take-a-shower weather.

But it’s no biggie, because we have central air. So all we need to do is close the windows and turn down the temperature, and everything’s fine!

Or so I thought.

Then, the other night, my wife and I decided to get some drive-thru ice cream, and when we arrived home, I noticed something. It was a smell. Perhaps it was the trash, I thought. But no, we’d just taken the trash out. So the dishes? But the sink was empty. Nothing in the garbage disposal, no spill, no unseen cat vomit. So what was it?

Then, I realized the horrifying answer: it was me. Or it was us, all of us in the house, including the cats and the dog. We had all, unknowingly, conspired to build the strange stale stink together.

If you’ve experienced this already yourself, I have some good news and some bad news. We’ll start with the bad news: for many of you, it’s only going to get worse. After all, a lot of us are working from home now. Which means an additional eight hours each day sitting in your home, making invisible smells. Your pets? They usually sleep through the day, awaking when you return. But not now. No, they’re awake, making cute appearances on your various Zoom calls and spreading their musk.

So that’s the bad news.

The good news is that we’re selling this Winix Triple Action HEPA Air Purifier & Humidifier. Basically, here’s what’s happening inside this thing: air is being dispersed across collection discs that trap allergens and pollutants. These discs spin continually and are rinsed in a bath of water that washes out the impurities from the air. The end result is that you get some really clean not-so-dry air. Usually, we’d stress the humidifier part and say this is great for winter or flu season. But then again, usually we’re not sitting in our sealed-off houses for 23.5 hours each day, basting in our own unfresheness straight through September. So maybe turning it on now is a good idea.

Will it totally eradicate the stink? Probably not. Scented candles should help with that. But will it make breathing a little nicer when you’re stuck inside with the AC cranked? Absolutely!
