Maximus stopped, carefully considering his options and keeping his infuriation at bay, before removing his helmet and turning back to the emperor. “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius commander of the armies of the north, general of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.”
Everyone in the stadium was both appalled and enthralled by his words. When he finished, an incredibly short gladiator with unnaturally pale skin walked forward as well and added, “I’m Spartacus!”
None were amused.
