Hello, it’s me. The public kitchen.
I’ve lived in a lot of places–offices, dormitories, you name it–and trust me, I’ve seen some shit.
I’ve seen Jane from accounting nuke some leftovers that improbably involved broccoli, blue cheese, and cod. Moreover, I’ve smelled it.
And I’ve watched Tim from sales try to heat up some chili for one minute, only to accidentally press an extra button and walk away without realizing he set the time to ten minutes. The splatter patterns would make a producer from Forensic Files cry.
And freshman Sandy? She was a magician. She could turn boxed brownie mix into ash and a fire drill with nothing more than a bit of forgetfulness.
Then there’s the fridges. Dear god, the fridges. Ever been to a museum, seen all the fossils, and wondered: “What if, instead of being preserved by time, all this stuff was just left in a giant cold-ish box? What kind of odor would arise?” Well, I’ll tell you, it ain’t exactly a bouquet of roses.
Which is to say nothing about the sticky countertops, the coffee pot that stinks of burnt grounds even when it’s freshly washed, and perhaps the most toxic substance of all: small talk between people who only vaguely know each other.
What I’m saying is, it’s best to stay away. And this can help you with that.
It’s a little thing you can set on your desk at work or in your dorm room. Inside, you’ll find compartments to cook your ramen noodles, your vegetables, eggs, et cetera. And its removable inner pan is nonstick, which makes it easy to clean. So you won’t be standing at the communal sink for very long scrubbing it out.
Is it a little silly, buying something just to make ramen (and one or two other things)? Yes. But also, is $20 a small price to pay to avoid me, the communal kitchen, at least some of the time? Also yes.
So get one, and cook some lunch without venturing beyond the comfort of your cubicle or dorm room.
