Enough With The Gifts

You’re probably not going to get these Foscam WiFi cameras by December 25th, which is fine because they’re probably too crappy to give as a gift.

But you? You deserve a camera this crappy.

Don’t get us wrong, they work just fine. But they all sport a 480p resolution, which isn’t exactly top-of-the-line (or middle-of-the-line), so a loved one would be rightly miffed to receive one.

That’s because we hold gifts to a higher standard than we do for the stuff we buy for ourselves. Think about it: Would you give your spouse a Hanes t-shirt? Would you buy one for yourself? Would you give your friend a gift certificate to Qdoba? Would you eat there yourself?

Gifts should be a nicer version of something than we’d buy for ourselves. That’s the whole point. You feel a little guilty buying yourself a $90 pair of trendy street slippers so you ask your mom to buy them for you instead.

[@skemmehs note: I actually asked my mom for a pair of Allbirds this year because I couldn’t justify buying them myself. Also, my mom is the only person I know who actually reads these product writeups, so: Hi mom! Sorry I’m not coming home this year. Thanks in advance for the wool shoes.]

These Foscams are the WiFi camera equivalent of Hanes t-shirts. They’ll get the job done. You’ll be able to tell that somebody is at your door or a raccoon is in your garbage. But you won’t be able to decipher the person’s face tattoo or count the raccoon’s teeth.

And you won’t have to feel buy buying it for yourself, because it’s hardly an indulgence. If anything, you’re taking the steps necessary to keep your home and family safe without splurging on bells and whistles. In some ways, this is a good gift for your loved ones even if you never give it to them.
