A Huge Turn On

Power outages have something for everyone. And by “something for everyone,” we mean, “something for everyone that’ll be the breaking point.”

There’s the big obvious stuff: losing the ability to keep your house cool or hot; a fridge full of produce and meat that you just got; no microwave, no toaster, no coffee machine in the morning.

Then there’s the stuff you don’t need but still want. Like, would it kill you to put off that new episode of Only Murders in the Building for a couple days? No. But watching it the day it comes out is your thing! And you should probably save your phone’s battery in case of an emergency. But you really want to listen to your favorite podcast!

Even the most stoic among us will hit a wall at some point. No TV? No podcasts? No problem. You can just read. At least, until it gets dark outside. Because, with no electricity, that’s also when it gets dark inside. And boy oh boy, it’s easier to read by the gentle warm light of your favorite lamp than it is by the eery glow of a camping lantern.

Which is to say nothing about the total uncontaminated silence. Wouldn’t you love to turn the fan on at night, circulate some air, create a little white noise?

This thing can help with all that. Plus, it’s got a solar panel, so you can recharge it during the day.

And yet, as is the case with a lot of stuff like this, its emergency functionality might lead you to believe that you can only use it when things get dire. But this isn’t the case. Just because you buy it to stay safe and happy when the lights flicker out, that doesn’t mean you can’t use it to run some fans in your beach tent, or watch the game while camping, or set up a blender outside for frozen cocktails at your garden party.

And yes, it is $599. Which is expensive. But it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than you’ll find it for anywhere else.

So get one. You’ll use it.
