Several soldiers said prayers. A few vomited on the floor of the landing boat, seasick or nervous. All of them waited, simultaneously sure and unsure of what waited for them when they landed.
Whistles blared, the locking mechanism began to spin, and the gate at the front slowly began to fall. As the first bullets whizzed overhead, many found their marks at the front of the ship. Bodies fell forward, backward, over the sides of the boats. Most of those who landed first were being slaughtered by machine gunners in bunkers up the beach.
Irk, drowning in his fatigues at the back of the ship cries out, “I thought they said we were part of a beach party!” A stray bullet pops his beach ball.
