Twinning: a 2-pack Meh-rathon
A screen lit up on the control panel in front of Jane. On it, a man in a t-shirt, a blazer, and jeans stepped forward, drinking a coffee. Jane recognized him instantly as Giles Melbourne, CEO of their privately funded space exploration company. “Hello and welcome to the Gemini-5000, SpaceTech’s brand new vessel for dealing with twin-related emergencies in space.”
“What the hell?” Jane said. “So, wait, this spacecraft is for this exact scenario? A twin taking over the greater space mission?”
“Oh, I doubt that’s exactly what it’s for,” Collins said, over the headset.
“In the event of a twin assuming the role of their sibling, hijacking a space mission, and subsequently shutting down comms,” Giles Melbourne went on, on the screen in front of Jane, “the remaining earthbound twin will be able to fly this smaller, faster spacecraft up to the main craft and restore order on board.”
“Weird,” Collins said over the headset. “I guess I was wrong about it being a coincidental name.”
“What the fuck?” Jane said. “So you had a special twin-emergency spacecraft and you didn’t think to, like, double-check that someone on board wasn’t a twin?”
“I just knew we had a secret spacecraft for some sort of emergency!” Collins protested over the headset.
