An entire pint of Steve’s banana pudding ice cream, as Ben and Jerry’s discontinued god’s gift to man - Late night snack. It was vanilla with caramel swirls and chocolate covered potato chip pieces. Along with chinese take out, of course.
Depends what the celebration is… Usually the birthday (or newly graduated or newly employed) person gets to pick the type of food.
When it is my turn to pick, thai, japanese (specifically sushi/sashimi), korean (soontofu) and xiao long bao are all possibilities, mostly depending on which I’ve had least recently.
Our extended family has pretty eclectic tastes, so we switch it up at pretty much every event. I think we’ve done styles from every major culinary region and continent except maybe Antarctica. Big favorites for protein are shrimp, scallops, salmon, crabs or steak (sous vide). Sometimes we make homemade pizza crusts and have everyone build their own personal pizza. For veggies, favorites are Belgian endives or asparagus wrapped in ham in a creamy Gruyère sauce or green beans wrapped in bacon. Dessert favorites are Black Forest cake or Crêpes Suzette or occasionally baked Alaska. But then, sometimes we just do pizza or fried chicken and ice cream.
The thing about growing up in a restaurant family in Florida, is that fresh fish, shrimp and lobster are everyday stuff. So, for us, Prime rib would be our “special” dinner.
Chateaubriand or Beef Wellington as main entree with several good bottles of red wine (Montepulciano). And if course something CHOCOLATE for dessert (with more red wine!). Sense the trend?
Sushi or Poke Bowl. Steak is too common to be a celebratory dish. Lobster is an overpriced cockroach of the sea that requires too much effort that covers you to lobster bits. Shrimp is the side dish version of the lobster.
@goldnectar Well, I agree “steak” is pretty common for most now, if you do that sort of thing. But I’d say the USDA Prime stuff you can get sometimes at Costco is pretty nice. The Filet Mignon of course but that is serious $$$.
I do like your description of “overpriced cockroach” – and we didn’t even get into politics here, but I think that term might apply in more places than just the seafood market.
I remember reading a book about someone that grew up in Maine and as a kid, they would complain “oh no, not Lobster AGAIN!”
King crab, the large ones you see on Deadliest Catch, and they sell at Costco. Used to be about $12 a pound, now it’s twice that around $24. The best grade ones are snapped-up by Japan and now, China. Apparently a lot of rich people in China running the sweatshops that make all the $20 appliances that we buy from Meh.
Something I haven’t eaten lately, so any of the above would be likely prospects, as well as Lamb, Lionfish, Roast beef/prime rib, Penne ala rustico… the list goes on and on…
Are people not aware of fruit gelatin? It’s gelatin with fruit cocktail inside! There’s a reason why they serve it in hospitals - to make people feel happy.
@elimanningface Family recipe for fall holiday “co-cola salad” with black cherry jello, cubed/diced Philadelphia cream cheese, chopped pecans and dark/bing cherries and some cranberry marmalade/relish.
All of the above and more!
Probably Indian or sushi.
Moms homemade lasagna
@tinamarie1974 is it more meat, cheese, or vegetable based? This is key information.
Nachos!
Skip the meal and go straight for a big dessert. Maybe brownie sundae with chocolate and caramel sauce?

@chienfou @hchavers
Dress skirt, dinner jacket?
pie
@ybmuG chicken pot?
@elimanningface Sure. Used to make that with puff pastry - just a top crust.
The fancy McDonald’s further away.
Something Italian
@billyrogers i’m a big Italian Icee fan too. Not Rita’s though. That tastes weird.
Steak, lobster and shrimp! With asparagus.

Something that someone else cooked!

@olperfesser is the restaurant still open?
We go to the Chinese restaurant for celebrating. If it’s celebrating on a budget, maybe pizza rolls and pierogies.

steak and sushi…cause why limit…its a celebration!!
Eel. Always eel. I voted for steak in the poll because it’s early and I forgot that eel is my favorite special pricey dinner.
Seafood of some sort, most likely crab. And Champagne, of course.
@ahacksaw meet @yorkrk and @pmarin.
Why are steak and lobster mutually exclusive? This needs to be a checkbox poll.
@bocoroth Surf and Turf…
Sushi at my favorite restaurant.
for my partner’s birthday, steak. for mine, sushi.
Crab legs and champagne.

@Grumman or maybe a decent Nero d’Avola

Japanese cuisine. It has something for most: meat, fish (raw or cooked), fried food, noodles, veggies…
Wait. Is the question about what celebration I am having with a meal or what meal I am having with a celebration?
Does “it” refer to the “something” or the “meal”?
Celebration: Not dying of starvation.
Meal: All of them. I’m from New Orleans, where every meal is a celebration of meals past, present, and future.

@elimanningface my parents used to make it with shredded lettuce, carrots and celery and top it with mayonnaise. Yeah, me too…
@elimanningface @ybmuG it’s not a party 'til the jello mold shows up…
@chienfou @elimanningface there’s always room
@elimanningface Family recipe for fall holiday “co-cola salad” with black cherry jello, cubed/diced Philadelphia cream cheese, chopped pecans and dark/bing cherries and some cranberry marmalade/relish.
@mike808 If you remove the cream cheese, chopped pecans, and cranberry marmalade, you really have something there .
@elimanningface @mike808 yeah… you have “No-Cola” salad???
@chienfou @elimanningface It’s in the name, so yeah, it is an ingredient too.
And of course, it calls for the jello mold or a bundt pan.
