@PooltoyWolf Hi, thought of you yesterday. Found a channel on Pluto TV network called Slow TV…channel 597. They’ve been showing locomotive-views of train runs (yesterday was Norway) through the seasons. Absolutely mesmerizing!! Sometimes I have to turn off the sound, especially when they’re slowing down — the wheel screeches bother the dogs
@PooltoyWolf I miss that. I used to enjoy flying, having family see me off at the gate and meeting them at the gate when they flew in. Security kabuki, body imaging, and the cattlecar flight seating for midgets have killed off the fun.
@duodec I am rapturously fascinated and enthralled by the concept of passenger flight…I love jet airliners, the sound of turbofan engines, and the experience of takeoff and landing! It never gets old for me. Even just wandering the airport is fun for me.
@PooltoyWolf I used to be. Flying places, watching the land flow far beneath you, cool jetways, interesting architecture in most of the airports. Takeoffs and landings. Flying into Las Vegas at night (we lived there so were coming home). It was all wonderful.
Hopefully I am going somewhere amazing likes Turks & Caicos, Greece, Switzerland or Italy/Sicily!
That said if my layover is long enough I am hitting Frontera and taking it on the plane. Frontera is a million times better than airplane food! Still have time, then Nuts on Clark for some of their amazing Cheddar popcorn…sssoooo good!
@tinamarie1974 - If you live west of Saskatchewan I guess it’s possible you might be laid over at ORD while going to those places. The only times I’ve ever been laid over there is when travelling to YYC.
@aetris ex STL depending on the airline there is a layover in ORD. There are not a lot of direct flight options now that we are not a major hub ( oh how I miss TWA)
@Stewbacca@tinamarie1974 I’m in Tampa sitting at the dealer waiting on an oil change (yes, I can do it myself but it’s required for the “Forever Warranty”) and I’m starving!!!
Portillo’s just down the street, lucky me!! Crisis averted…thanks for the reminder. Love the Chicago dogs
Not sure where I read it, but I believe on average there are more people at O’Hare (travellers & workers) than there are in my entire home state of North Dakota!! I try to avoid this monstrosity, but they are the hub for both American Airlines & United Express which fly out of Fargo. Many times I don’t have a choice. Fortunately, my longest layover has been a hair over 4 hours & that was only because our connecting flight was flagged for inspection by the Drug Enforcement Agency. Plane came from Mexico, so you do the math…
First I get coffee from not-Starbucks, then I go to my gate, to scout it out, and then I wander around indefinitely, for the sake of walking and looking. Or sometimes I’ll sit down someplace to read.
To qualify my comments, note that my closest airport is NYC’s Laguardia and I’m not that far from JFK. I hate Newark but mostly because of having to get there from home.
I’ve flown TO Chicago about a half-dozen times, always to Midway, and most recently in January 2001, so not very pertinent to today’s poll. I did pick someone up from O’Hare once and did not especially enjoy that experience.
I am usually willing (and able) to pay more to avoid doubling (or tripling, etc.) the odds of the various unpleasant things that can happen during the transition from “on ground and away from airport” to “in airplane above the airport.”
Wasn’t it O’Hare in the (original, 1970) Airport movie? Oh! No, it was Chicago’s “Lincoln International Airport” I still love the line, “You couldn’t fly that plane six feet under the ground!”
@baqui63 - I haven’t been to Newark in more than a decade but it used to be my secret weapon - PHL is actually much closer to me but I hate it and, rather than deal with AA’s hub monopoly and minimum of two-legged flight each way, we’d drive across to EWR for a cheaper direct flight, leaving the car at an airport hotel where the overnight stay with free parking for however long cost less than PHL long-term parking.
@aetris@baqui63 I really don’t mind PHL. It’s 20 minutes away so I usually get dropped off and picked up. I tend to fly Southwest which is far down the row so it’s easier to get in and out of. I’ve flown out of Newark the last two years. It has it’s advantages only in size so there tend to be more food options. Getting there sucks. Helpful hint: Park at the Renaissance Hotel. Reserve online, it’s a short shuttle ride and the best price going around there. Plus, you park your own car in their lot. I refuse to turn over my keys to any parking attendants. My own secret weapon tends to be BWI. Totally worth the ride down as long term parking is really reasonable at $8/day with no extra fees and flights are often cheapest out of there.
@cinoclav - we liked the only Southwest flight we ever took but we almost never seem to be going where they’re flying. I hate to run down AA because a cousin flies for them, BUT I would rather fly almost ANYONE else.
I’ve had other people recommend BWI to me - I’ll give it a shot one of these days. We don’t fly as much as we used to.
I live right outside of Detroit so I’ve never had the pleasure of a layover at O’Hare, my plane would never stop there. Chicago’s a cool city, lots to do there and tons of fun.
Garrett Popcorn Shops
@Ignorant It really is good, isn’t it?
@mossygreen sure is
Home?
@mossygreen me too!
Hopefully nowhere near captain peepee pants like last time… He ended up in the row behind us all the way to ABQ.

Frontera, the only place in O’Hare I actually look forward to eating at.
The longest layover @ O’Hare I’ve had was when we went to South Korea.
I got stuck in O’Hare overnight by myself due to a weather cancelled flight. Never again.
To people watch at the baggage claim.
I could care less where I’m going - a layover means I must be flying, and that’s cause for excitement in and of itself!

@llangley @PooltoyWolf someone just showed me that channel yesterday.
@llangley Sounds a bit like the 24 hour cab view stream they did for Thanksgiving on ‘Railroad Alaska’!
@PooltoyWolf I miss that. I used to enjoy flying, having family see me off at the gate and meeting them at the gate when they flew in. Security kabuki, body imaging, and the cattlecar flight seating for midgets have killed off the fun.
That channel sounds very interesting though!

I wish it still was.
@duodec Maybe it still can be. C:

Someone clearly wrote this poll stuck at Ohare
@CaptAmehrican or they are about to be.

Pequod’s.

If you are changing terminals it might take you as long as the layover to do it so then you’d have no worries.
If it’s long enough one of the museum’s. Idk what any of those other things are
