@spacemart when I was like 6, my parents joined a gym so I got to spend time in the waiting room with a gameboy and some money for the vending machine, and I had a josta and that shit blew my 6 year old mind. I would ask my parents all the time to bring me back the soda with the jaguar on it when they went without me. I can’t even remember what it tasted like now, but I’d fund that kickstarter for sure
What I want is soda from The Pop Shoppe. When I was a lad my dad had an old vending machine in the garage where you could put in a dime and slide a glass soda bottle out of the metal rows. He filled it with Root Beer, Cream Soda, Orange, a 7-up clone, etc. Cute little stubby glass bottles, and they were amazing.
The Pop Shoppe is still around in a few places, but I haven’t been able to get ahold of a bottle. I think they’re Canadian now, bless ‘em.
@mehcuda67@stinks Same here… No idea if it would actually be good or not, but whatever.
I rarely drink “soda” with the exception of ginger ale/beer though I do drink a fair amount of unsweetened carbonated things like seltzer with lemon or lime juice or other flavorings.
Josta was a soft drink brand that was produced by PepsiCo and the first energy drink ever introduced by a major US beverage company. Josta’s flavor has been described as predominantly fruity, with a hint of spice and a touch of the key ingredient guaraná
Shasta Red Cream Soda. I also miss China Cola, which is still included on Reed’s 4-pack packaging, but no one seems to have it for sale. I also miss Ginseng Rush, and still have a bar code shelf tag for it. But my choice is Shasta Red Cream Soda.
Hell, I’d be thrilled if all of the soft drink companies in the usa would stop using high fructose corn syrup. And fuck all the god-fucking-damned artificial sweeteners. Especially when they sneak them into many beverages to lower their calorie count per serving. Bullshit, almost all of the good ole usa’s food and beverages have been ruined for profit and tax breaks.
@edguyver14 Is your objection to using HFCS based on some particular reasoning?
It is arguably a far more efficient way to produce sugar than say, sugar cane. At the same time, are we using land (and fossil fuels) to grow corn to make sugar instead of growing corn (or something else) to feed people or, say, growing corn to make ethanol (instead of extracting it from fossil fuels)?
Or is it just knee-jerk “industrially produced food for an overpopulated planet bad, expensive eco-neutral food for the elite/rich good”?
If someone makes a (completely unsubstantiated) claim that HFCS is terrible, it’s not unreasonable to ask why they have that opinion, when the facts are that fructose/sucrose are not different whether they come from beets or sugar cane, and sugar cane production, in particular, is loaded with racial baggage and oppression. So, for me, HFCS vs cane sugar is an easy win for HFCS.
So what makes the source special and worthy of the claim that it’s bad for you and the rest of us should agree?
If @edguyver14 wants me to agree with his position, I want to know why I should and make a fact-based informed decision to agree or not, instead of the all-too-common “some popular dude on the internet said it was true, so it must be” nonsense that counts as more than pure FUD, disinformation, rumor, fiction, or worse.
And if it’s just their personal opinion, then own that without the “us vs other” plea.
Queen-O
Never found it in the south, but it was big in the Buffalo NY area when we would visit family (when I was young), until it wasn’t.
Not so much a “soda” (not carbonated), but would qualify to be a “pop”, after properly mixing it with water. http://ampoleagle.com/queeno-and-western-new-yorks-br-love-affair-with-loganberry-p7563-202.htm
I found a loganberry mix on Amazon, liked it, but still not the same.
Anyone else hear ever tasted it?
dnL. Remember the 7up ads proclaiming “never had it, never will”? Well they released briefly a Mt. Dew like product. Green in color but in a clear bottle to mimic 7up. I don’t remember it being great tasting but it was really clever.
Another very short-lived product I loved as a kid was Aspen. It was an apple flavored soda. Granted, it probably wasn’t all that different than Martinelli’s sparkling cider, though probably a bit sweeter.
@ciabelle@kjrogers I remember being at a rest stop with my parents one time and they gave me some money to get something out of the vending machine. I saw Aspen and tried it. It was pretty good, as I recall.
@ciabelle Oh my god, I love apple flavored sodas! There are a couple of pretty good Mexican ones, easy to find, and a British one named Tango that is probably much harder to find but has the benefit of reminding me of the tv show Peep Show. Wait, there might only be one Mexican brand that comes in different flavors. Sidral Mundet.
@ciabelle@mossygreen In '93 I had an apple flavored pop called “Appy”. It was a bit of an acquired taste, but since I was about the only one who liked it, I got to drink more of it.
I’m not sure where it was purchased other than not in Iowa. I was on a missions trip to Mexico, but part of the group came from Minnesota and North Dakota, and we all met up in El Paso.
@Evolucion7@Tadlem43 Barq’s OG root beer is still distinctly different than the current brand sellout formula/product. I think they sold to either Coke or Pepsi.
@mike808 Yeah, I think Coke bought them out. I grew up drinking Barq’s when it was a small, family owned company in Mississippi. Best root beer and cream soda ever made!
@Evolucion7 Yeah… I looked and on Amazon I can get a 12 pack for $18.95 …but the shipping’s free! lol
I’m in the wrong business. I need to be bootlegging cream soda. lol
I mean I know I can just get the mexi-coke and cana-coke at sams/costco… but it would be nice if they just un-did whatever they did to it when they switched over the formula for the bribery sugar hfcs.
@thismyusername Didn’t they do that with Coke Classic shortly after the launch of New Coke? Then when New Coke was discontinued, the product they produce today is that classic formula? Though they concurrently switched from sugar to HFCS, so that probably has an affect on taste. It certainly does with Pepsi.
@ruouttaurmind the coke we have here in the usa today is the reformulated coke classic from after the new coke… many speculate ‘new coke’ was all a ruse to switch to the bribery sugar hfcs formula.
Was Teem the forerunner to Sierra Mist? That’s what the Google says, but I remember liking Teem as a kid and I would not be able to choke down Sierra Mist on a dare.

@RiotDemon the truth is, orbitz tasted terrible. but it made for a great paperweight. i’d be tempted if shipping wasn’t so high (though i don’t find it unreasonable at all). certainly preferred orbitz the drink to the gum or the travel company.
@RiotDemon i love boba tea. definitely better flavors, totally different texture (and much larger unless you can get the mini bobas like at lollicup), and no carbonation. (well, idk, maybe there is carbonated boba tea out there.) my favorites are honeydew, thai tea, and taro. we have popping bobas too - same shape as regular boba but transparent and different colors. when you bite into them there’s flavored juice inside.
i wonder if the carbonation keeps the orbitz bits floating? or maybe it’s just the density of the bits themselves vs. the soda. i did notice that in that ebay listing’s description, in one of the flavors the bits sink to the bottom. perhaps they’re finally reaching end-of-life but hey, they’ve had a good run
(also looked at lava lamps recently. i loved mine. i still love “stimmy” toys/lamps/etc - very relaxing.)
@jerk_nugget I’ve never had a popping boba. Sounds better than the regular ones.
I think the floating was all about the density. At least now there’s molecular gastronomy and spherification if someone is really inclined to make their own.

I wish I still had my old lava lamp. I believe it was orange liquid and purple lava.
@RiotDemon mine was just clear water and the lava was a deep tealish green. matched my teenage bedroom walls perfectly haha. had the classic angular black base and top too. when i looked for newer ones, a lot were silver and/or sort of rocket shaped. the classic ones can still be found, and for cheap, but most have terrible reviews. maybe if i see them locally at some point i’ll grab one.
Surge isn’t long gone anymore. I can buy it at my local Dollar Tree now. I made a post about surge a while ago and some nice folks pointed out that it’s back.
When I was a kid my mom was always drinking diet sodas. I got very used to the gold label RC Cola. Also, Pepsi Light with the lemon flavor to it was really good! Loved that stuff. To this day when I’m getting soda at a restaurant I mix lemonade and cola along with a lemon wedge if they have it.
Isn’t Jolt Cola still being made? I drank like 6 of them like 2 month ago from my local dollar general although to be fair they stopped selling them last month
@Evolucion7@therealjrn@thismyusername It IS home goods like furniture and pillows and somethings, but ALSO weird soda and world candy and tons of stupid knickknacks and an extensive wine department. It’s like a Pier 1 with a food department which has Marmite and Japanese gummies and salty Dutch licorice, but also house brand chips and spices. It’s not cheap, but it’s interesting. We used to have one in the next town, but they closed and I’m still sad even though I hardly ever bought anything there.

@mustardeleven
Exactly, I had one at Burger King last week…I poured some of it out in honor of Crystal Pepsi, may it rest in peace.
@mustardeleven literally saw a coworker drinking some today.
You can get it on Amazon.

Woops, I wrote that backwards. What can I say, the store had a really good post VD sale.

@PlutoIsAPlanet Purple drank.
@Barney loves purple.

What I can’t fathom is why no major manufacturer makes a caffeinated grape soda. All major brands of grape soda are caffeine free.
@PlutoIsAPlanet just make sure it’s not double cups grape drank.
Shasta Red Cream Soda. I also miss China Cola, which is still included on Reed’s 4-pack packaging, but no one seems to have it for sale. I also miss Ginseng Rush, and still have a bar code shelf tag for it. But my choice is Shasta Red Cream Soda.

New Coke. It was like Pepsi’s poor cousin from Atlanta.
Moxie is definitely still around but it might be more of a New England thing. Definitely see it in Maine all the time

Anyone remember Nesbitts Orange Soda? That was some good stuff.
Goose Island Orange Cream or Blue Sky Orange Cream.
@yakkoTDI Try the Goose Island IPAs. Much better!
@shahnm IPAs and my misaligned taste buds do not get along. Way too bitter. Their Honker’s Ale was good until they killed it off.
I was trying to remember Josta’s name the other day, so thanks for that. Also, I miss Kick, RC’s answer to Mt. Dew.
