@ianrbuck I prefer a rain coat for that very reason, plus it works in slanting rain and actually keeps you snd whatever you tuck inside dry. But I have some small fold up umbrellas that I tote with me if it looks like rain, as rain is pretty rare here and I don’t want to be toting a coat around.
@cspwal Yeah, I keep one of those in my movie bag. Sometimes it’s clear skies when we go in and raining when we leave. We went to the movies one April a few decades ago in shorts because it was in the 80’s. Came out to a foot of snow on the ground. Felt like we’d been portalled somewhere, but actually the temp had dropped 50 degrees in an hour. High altitude + low humidity = rapid weather changes.
@Pixy Please tell me, how does the wicked witch shower? I mean, wouldn’t that kill her? I don’t even want to know what she smells like if she doesn’t bathe. Maybe that’s why she hangs out with flying monkeys??
I forgot to start a thread months ago about how meh has never sold an umbrella according to mehstalker. I was on the search for an umbrella that wasn’t boring, but still functional. I ended up running across the inverted closing umbrellas. Perfect for getting into your car during a hard rain. Folds up with your door almost closed, and it folds with the wet part inside so you’re not throwing water all over your car.
I still haven’t purchased one, because there’s several different versions, and I haven’t researched enough to see which is the best one. I have a bunch of umbrellas already, so it’s not like I’m in a rush to get another… But as stated above, in Florida you usually have one at work, some in your car, and another one at home. Or sometimes in my case, you just wait five minutes until the weather changes.
@RiotDemon But you are making a “cup” of water there at the end. You will still have to maneuver it around to empty it while letting more water in to your precious car.
@RiotDemon - This is brilliant! It’s an issue for me, as any moisture in my car fogs up the windows. A lot. I think it’s a Honda thing.
I keep a squeegee handy and use umbrellas so my clothes don’t introduce moisture.
Never had this problem in CA.
I live in the Seattle area, I just keep one in my car in case it ever decides to truly rain. Mostly I just end up wearing a hat to keep my glasses dry.
@jmendenhall I’ve lived in the PNW since 1962. (I was here for the Columbus Day storm.) I keep an umbrella in my car because I hate sitting at my work desk dripping.
I don’t understand so many people’s aversion to umbrellas, particularly those that see them as a sign of “weakness”. Yes, if it is a light rain, I will leave mine in the car and just get a little wet, but if it is raining hard enough that your clothes will remain damp the whole day , declining to use one seems pig-headed.
Another Seattleite. Never carry an umbrella with me. My rain gear is a pleather jacket and a hat, and a pack cover for my backpack since I’d rather not have thousands of dollars of stuff getting soaked. But you learn real quick here to just deal with the rain. Its kind of fun walking around my usual haunt and seeing who is from the area and who is a transplant.
Umbrellas to me have a few major downfalls that make them not worth it. For one, you have to give up a hand to use them, and I’d rather have both hands free. Another is just how much space they take up. When you’re walking around a super crowded place, those things take up a lot of space and get in everyone’s way. I’d rather just wear the hat and jacket. I always end up taking the jacket off regardless of it being wet once I get inside anyways.
I have an app that give me a buzz if rain is in the forecast for the day, and when it is, I’ll stuff a compact umbrella in my bag. Unless it’s raining in the morning when I leave for work, in which case I’ll carry it out the door for the walk to the subway. I’ve been caught in too many downpours when all I expect is drizzle to slack off on this.
I own a plethora of compact from the $ store. I’m in Western Washington and I’m not afraid to use them, even just walking to the mailbox. I love the rain, but my hair doesn’t.
No, rain jackets were invented so I wouldn’t have to waste a hand holding an umbrella.

@moondrake I roll my rain coat up and stick it in my backpack if there might be rain. I’m weird though.
U r kidding.
It depends.
If I’m walking somewhere during the week (I.e up the street or to get the mail), I’ll use an umbrella.
I keep one in my car throughout the year though, so…
I don’t melt in the rain.
I have a pocket umbrella that goes with me if there is a chance it will be warm enough to rain.
I. HATE. RAIN.
Thankfully, most of the precipitation here is snow.
I keep an umbrella in the bottom of my bookbag
@cranky1950 same here. In college I started doing that because I wasn’t adult enough to look at the forecast every day.
@kshannon1 I only started doing that as a way to not lose my umbrella
I keep one in the car.
Although umbrellas have other uses besides for rain.
Drinks, for shade from sun, if you’re @f00l then that’s how you travel in the sky.
And don’t even get me started on parasols (although @mfladd &/or @KittySprinkles might have a thought or two on them)…
Umbrellas are for monsoons and bitches. There. I said it.
@tyxnight We have monsoons constantly during the summer. Therefore, I have a big umbrella.
@PocketBrain And I respect that.
For the same reason Snoop Dogg carries an umbrella… Fo drizzle
@tonylegrone I should be able to star your post more than once.
I keep a super compact umbrella in my computer bag at all times. Where is that option?
@cspwal Yeah, I keep one of those in my movie bag. Sometimes it’s clear skies when we go in and raining when we leave. I always keep one in each of my cars. Boy Scouts taught me to always be prepared, yo.
Like every other normal person, I keep an umbrella at work, two in the car, and a couple more at home.
I don’t need an umbrella, thanks to the miracle of evaporation.
@awk
So… moisture touches you and it instantly evaporates?
Cool.
Because everyone needs a stupid umbrella. I’m waiting for the day Meh sells these.
Being a Florida Man, I have a compact umbrella in my bag, a couple in the car, and an emergency umbrella at work.
@sjk3 Exactly. In South Florida, one can never have too many umbrellas. Tropical rain can come anytime.
Contrary to popular rumour , I am not the Wicked Witch of the West (though at least one of those descriptors may be true ). I will not melt when wet.
@Pixy I keep telling my dog he’s not made of sugar but I still have to bodily force him to cross the rainy three foot gap to go pee under the carport.
@Pixy Please tell me, how does the wicked witch shower? I mean, wouldn’t that kill her? I don’t even want to know what she smells like if she doesn’t bathe. Maybe that’s why she hangs out with flying monkeys??
@bsci87 maybe she bathes in some other liquid like acetone or something.

@ELUNO good point. I still think if you are quick, it’s less water than the alternative. I’ll have to see if anyone has made this point in a review.
@ELUNO just do a quck reverse before bringing it inside.
@RiotDemon - This is brilliant! It’s an issue for me, as any moisture in my car fogs up the windows. A lot. I think it’s a Honda thing.

@KDemo You never had moisture there either.
I live in the Seattle area, I just keep one in my car in case it ever decides to truly rain. Mostly I just end up wearing a hat to keep my glasses dry.
I have lived in Portland Oregon and Seattle Washington since 2001. The only people who carry umbrellas are tourists.

@KDemo curly hair?
@RiotDemon - Sometimes.
… if, like John Steed, I never know when I might need a makeshift weapon.
