@PlacidPenguin I mentioned I’ve heard both “half” and “60” and those reports validate each other using old headcount.
My expectation is that some reassignment would occur within Amazon and exact numbers won’t be available. Also, the Woot corp umbrella now includes dozens of shirt production staff for things we wouldn’t think of as consumer facing Woot, so that muddies the percentage assessment
@PlacidPenguin That’s not the way I read the tweet. I read it as him having heard “half” and “60”, which match his old numbers (i.e. there used to be 120 employees).
@taternuggets there’s yet to be an analogy presented that fits but that one definitely does not come close. It’s more happy-nostalgic with a touch of impatience or maybe slight anxiety for the finality yet to come.
@cinoclav I’d like to think I would still have gotten the job… because they kept the woot CSRs. I couldn’t hold a creative candle to Scott and Amy. I am so sad.
Woot’s losing more that they realize.
There’s a thread about this going on in the Woot forums. I hope it’s okay that I’m posting a link to it. ADQ, Scott (slydon), and Amy (amynance, another writer) have posted in there. http://www.woot.com/forums/viewpost.aspx?postid=7171134
If the creative staff is fired, I will no longer be a Woot customer. I hate it but I’m not going to sit by while this happens.
Even though I don’t really participate in the Woot forums, whenever I see the camaraderie, I get happy.
I’ve been following this since yesterday, and I’m sad by all this. (Not just because humor is leaving, but because now a lot of people are losing their (exciting) jobs.)
@bakerzdosen they could try that hot new concept of one item a day, midnight central. $5 shipping. But take it back to it’s roots of cool stuff I want to spend money on for no reason. Like that rockford fosgate wifi mp3 car thingy I had where it auto sync’ed when I pulled in the garage. That was so cool. Or the arcade controller which I know is still new in the box somewhere in my house. Those Mp3 streaming devices that worked on HPNA my mom still uses which I can’t ever remember who made them. Woot had some cool stuff… 10 years ago.
@ZoboFlobby Well, yeah, I’ve got several Woot items kicking around myself (though sadly none as old as 2004. My orders only go back to 2007 and stuff that I still have/use only goes back to 2011, but I have a Fissler pressure cooker set from 2012 that I still LOVE and use quite often), but I’ve also got quite a few meh items around as well.
I just don’t think Amazon is dumping woot any time soon. I also don’t think that there would be much benefit of Mediocre forking out the kind of money that Amazon would demand for woot. I mean, sure, if Amazon was going to shut down woot and Mediocre got it for an absolute song, then sure, do it. There’s enough value in the brand still to make that worth it. Otherwise, no deal.
@snapster my all-time career high was when one of my writeups led the Associated Press to contact you about removing it. It was like the Babe Ruth calling his shot moment. I wrote better stuff but I never had a better day.
@narfcake not a c&d kind of request. A “why not change it to a topic we like more?” request. Like if a vegan wrote McDonald’s to ask they get rid of burgers.
@del (thunderthighs) posted an update on the main forums. She will be the sole moderator, TaylorSwiftHaircut (TSH) has become a writer, Kathleen retains her current writer position.
@f00l That’s hard to say. Last month’s crap thread is still winding down and people are still posting random stuff in the random threads. And, of course, people are posting about the layoffs.
Still, I don’t think most people know about it yet, really. Silly people who have lives or something and haven’t checked in the last couple of days. So odd.
To Woot’s credit, they haven’t deleted any of the discussion about the layoffs, and TT’s post to try to address the issue helps some. I wanted some sort of acknowledgment about it and at least for now I think that’s the best we’re going to get. I’m sure there is more to this story we don’t and will likely never know. Whatever their reasoning is, they are losing some essential people. Spreading TT, TSH, and Kathleen even thinner than they had been doesn’t seem sustainable. I admire each of them but three people trying to do the work of five writers and two or three mods? I wish them luck.
@medz That seems a bit harsh, medz. TSH is talented and a good person. I’ve had a fair bit of interaction with her since she started working at Woot and she’s the real deal.
@peaceetc Looking around an kibitzing I sense that many places are setting up a round of cost cutting, where I work it seems every review got downgraded one point by senior management. This is the payback year of a new republican administration layoffs, tax breaks, and windfall profits will happen. Remember shrub parading greenspan before us to tell us how surpluses were bad and how great the economy was gonna be if taxes to the rich were cut instead? Objectivists and communists are bad for society.
I can just imagine the discussions about “faux-rationality” that the other party takes oh-so-seriously.
Objectivism is supposed to be a teenage or young-adult stage that some people adopt and then grow out of. Because they supposedly get better at being rational.
It looks like most of the Wooters that threatened to quit have backed off. I think my purchasing days are over although I may drop in to chat. I own too much crap anyway. Plus I found a new Pokémon Go friend.
@sammydog01 Boycotts are hard- there’s a somewhat famous picture of the Modern Warfare 2 Steam group that was boycotting the lack of dedicated servers for the game, and you can see about 15-20 people in the image playing Modern Warfare 2 on or close to launch day.
@sammydog01 Maybe just set yourself a challenge that you can’t use wootstalker to look at the items, only Woot’s site itself. That should make it much easier to not buy anything, because you’ll have a lot of trouble even figuring out what to buy.
@dashcloud Hey now, maybe you should take the view that you should ONLY buy through wootstalker, that way, more of your hard earned cash is going to me instead of them.
@lichme Woot has gotten too big as it is. The current count on WootStalker is 5,689 active items, which is even more than the typical Costco (about 4,000 items).
@lichme TT has promised ‘more info in a bit in a handsomely written blog’. I keep hearing
’So long, farewell,auf wiedersehen, good night’ from ‘The Sound Of Music’.
@f00l@oldcatlady I stopped buying wine online at my wife’s request. I think my last purchase was 3 years ago and it was Wellington from woot. Even back then they were saying “get it now, because this is it!”
@adq That’s more of a @dave question- you can write in using the normal support form or Twitter if he follows you/has open DMs.
Hopefully it works out- would love to see the end product!
@dashcloud I was mostly kidding/channeling Scott. I’m p sure they’re not into paying me again. I wish I didn’t like have a job though because I do have things I wanna do.
@TitsMcGee oh man is this Amy I couldn’t pinpoint it til the dog pooping thing. Didn’t you start a Tumblr? You should, I have a banana one, it’s the place to go for photos of one kind of thing repeatedly.
@adq You know it gurrrl. I recall that someone may have beaten me to the idea, so I need a point of differentiation if I pursue it. Perhaps it’s gifs of dogs doing that circle poop walk thing. Then again, I wouldn’t want to paint myself into a corner.
@adq The fact that you didn’t know it was Amy until then makes this really surreal- you must’ve been like who the hell is this random person, and why am I tagged with them?
@dashcloud it’s also weird for me to think about people who just joined this site and are now trying to figure out why the hell a retail company requires one to go back and watch a previous season
@adq Not a day goes by where I don’t think about how I’d like to not be working so I can do things like go to the free Wednesday movie at a local library that all the elderly people attend, or stay home on Sunday and try and fail to watch two hours of The Love Boat. I would be so happy every day. I would descend into madness, but I’d be so, so happy doing it.
Dave and I still talk in little bursts every few weeks, Matthew and I exchange funny comic book panel jokes pretty regularly, and Sam was sleeping in my apartment two nights ago.
@TitsMcGee YOU DONT WORK FOR MEH THIS WAS A SPECIFC REPLY TO @DASHCLOUD but if everyone is curious Amy and I saw Baby Driver the other day and we had a great time
@slydon I didn’t know I was curious until my curiosity was satisfied. Baby Driver is amazing. I’m glad I don’t have to rethink my respect for you and Amy.
@slydon I’ll put @adq on the growing list of people I won’t view with grave suspicion! I thought the most unexpected/exciting part of Baby Driver was
the spoiler tag doesn’t work.
{I removed the spoiler and you can tell me if you want it back in - ~TC}
@thumperchick It’s not really actually a spoiler, as it does not in any way affect the plot, but I went in as an unaware Phantom of the Paradise superfan (non-Canadian edition) and actually gasped with joy. I thought it would be funny to spoiler-tag/fake spoiler tag, since I don’t assume anyone else shares this particular interest of mine. I thank you for your consideration, and you can put it back in or not.
@Thumperchick Agreed! Honestly, Phantom of the Paradise is enough of a clue for any other non-Canadian superfans to figure it out. I’ll start: William Finley is dead.
@slydon I cannot argue, because you are right, but I haven’t seen Smokey and the Bandit since the early '80’s, probably, and am obsessed with Phantom of the Paradise. Wait, is Smokey and the Bandit why Baby Driver is set in Atlanta? I am late to this party.
Clammy: “Bah! The category pages are all different! Why are you doing this to me?!”
It’s true, Clammy, they are a little different. We did a lot of customer research and found out that people prefer pictures over words. So we replaced the boring ol’ list of subcategories that looked like this:
<followed by a bunch of pictures>
Hmmm.
personally, I think both are totally useful. Like plenty wurdz myself
@f00l I liked looking at it, but then, you know me and my idiosyncrasies. Plus, we now have it saved, in case there are any more, uh, disappearing words.
You don’t think Mediocre is better for all the journey here? I suspect that going down that road was helpful in figuring out the direction he wanted to go.
@KDemo every single reaction, decision and performance result has gone down the paths I most expected since I first negotiated a minority investment from Amazon in 2006.
There is one creative path I wish Amazon was able to pivot me to in negotiating my release in 2012, but it was a long shot I enjoyed taking and would repeat.
Aside from personal staff connections, the inevitable demise of Woot is expected and even enjoyable to me.
Sorry if this doesn’t match anyone’s personal feelings of nostalgia or the story arc of Woot they wish.
There’s a mention of layoffs in the poll thread- anyone we know?
Probably should have posted this:
I don’t have any other information, but I suspect it will be a hit to the forums presence.
Edit: click in for @snapster’s own response to himself.
Maybe Amazon is steamrolling over woot?
I heard mention of 60 layoffs, but don’t hold me to it…
@daveinwarsh Yeah, that number was in @snapster’s reply tweet.
@ACraigL @daveinwarsh
He said it was based off of older numbers which he had though, and wasn’t sure about the precise number.
@PlacidPenguin @daveinwarsh
@adq tweeted:
@ACraigL Damn. Kinda harsh comment about the coal mines @snapster.
@sammydog01 on twitter, everything’s so political I was more joke-playing to that. You know, all the growth in that sector.
I wish folks well, but the direction has been clear for some time.
@snapster
Ah.
Thanks for elaborating on that.
@PlacidPenguin That’s not the way I read the tweet. I read it as him having heard “half” and “60”, which match his old numbers (i.e. there used to be 120 employees).
I imagine this is something like watching one of your children being abused by your ex-wife’s new husband.
@taternuggets Wow. I didn’t imagine anything like that.
@taternuggets there’s yet to be an analogy presented that fits but that one definitely does not come close. It’s more happy-nostalgic with a touch of impatience or maybe slight anxiety for the finality yet to come.
i imagine this is like watching new mugshots of tiger woods
i imagine this is like waking up in the morning and wondering what new tweets hath been wrought overnite.
i imagine this is like watching giant icebergs calve from some antarctic ice shelf
i imagine this is like watching a slow motion chase of a white ford bronco
@taternuggets
It’s like watching as how a company which you built up into something recognized and then sold is being shrunk down.
Oh wait… Should probably leave the analogies to other people.
i imagine it’s like watching the last episode of “star trek: enterprise”
@no1 Keep trying, you’ll get it.
I imagine it’s like your kitten is stuck in a tree and amazon is throwing rocks at it.
i imagine it’s like your tree is stuck in some rocks and your kitten is throwing amazons at it
i imagine it’s like first watching the original trilogy and then watching eps. I-III
@no1 got me with the “throwing amazons at it” line. Thanks for the laugh.
@taternuggets
The real woot essence died long ago. I can only be sad for what once was, and for staff plowed under by tone-deaf management.
@KDemo oh and the nastalgia for deals.woot, that was a happy time in my life!
How can anyone find anything on that site to tell?
@craigthom It’s all insider trading at this point. Nothing has been officially announced.
@ACraigL I was just joking about how cluttered woot.com is.
@craigthom But you could just use the search feature- oh, never mind.
@sammydog01 The search feature was suggested by the interns before …
@narfcake You mean the interns which are probably being let go?
@LaVikinga More in reference to this …
http://www.woot.com/forums/viewpost.aspx?postid=7168554
@narfcake It’s little gems like this that make me glad I can throw an upvote here for comments in appreciation.
Hot take: Amazon is just making room for buying meh.
@wishlish
OH HELL NO!
… although if that does happen, @snapster, could you see if they’d throw an offer for TeeTurtle so Ramy’s dreams could be fulfilled TOO?
source
ADQ tweeted that one of the original writers was laid off. Slydon checked in last night but that’s the only staff post I have seen.
So, @tHumperchick got the paw in the door just in time. I expect an onslaught of resumes to be headed meh’s way.
@cinoclav One could even theorize about her knowing in advance…
@cinoclav I’d like to think I would still have gotten the job… because they kept the woot CSRs. I couldn’t hold a creative candle to Scott and Amy. I am so sad.
Woot’s losing more that they realize.
@baqui63 nah.
@Thumperchick, you surely know this, but for anyone else who might not, there was an implied in my comment above.

@peaceetc you wrote a really great note to Woot CS.
@Thumperchick thank you. I’m not naive enough to think it will change anything but at least I made my voice heard.
Maybe Amazon just doesn’t get it and they’re giving up. Perhaps they’d consider a sale of Woot to Mediocre?
@james_hardiman What exactly would Mediocre’s motivation be to purchase WOOT!?
@bakerzdosen they could try that hot new concept of one item a day, midnight central. $5 shipping. But take it back to it’s roots of cool stuff I want to spend money on for no reason. Like that rockford fosgate wifi mp3 car thingy I had where it auto sync’ed when I pulled in the garage. That was so cool. @snapster my all-time career high was when one of my writeups led the Associated Press to contact you about removing it. It was like the Babe Ruth calling his shot moment. I wrote better stuff but I never had a better day.
@slydon Heh! On one hand, it’s a takedown request. On the other hand, “I’m noticed!!”
@narfcake not a c&d kind of request. A “why not change it to a topic we like more?” request. Like if a vegan wrote McDonald’s to ask they get rid of burgers.
@slydon Are you gonna give us the details or make us try to find it on google? (I’m terrible at google.)
@slydon Ah. The “removing it” made me think of a C&D.
@sammydog01 @narfcake
https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100706/01260510077.shtml
There was a preceding blogger uproar about an AP “fees for quoting us” policy & price list that was a valid concern. Ah, the good old Open Web
Thanks @slydon, I’d forgotten how fun that was!
@snapster Too funny. I noticed that the AP links no longer work. They must be embarrased.
@del (thunderthighs) posted an update on the main forums. She will be the sole moderator, TaylorSwiftHaircut (TSH) has become a writer, Kathleen retains her current writer position.
@ACraigL
Then I hope they gave her a raise.
How many posts in the forums, NOW vs THEN? I presume activity has dropped …
@peaceetc I’m with ADQ. Screw them.
@ACraigL so they’re keeping the new hotness… I hope they get slapped with an ageism suit.
@medz That seems a bit harsh, medz. TSH is talented and a good person. I’ve had a fair bit of interaction with her since she started working at Woot and she’s the real deal.
@medz My thought too- dump the higher paid senior writers.
@peaceetc I’m not saying TSH and Kat are just pretty faces. I’m sure they’re quite talented.
@cranky1950 Objectivists are bad to marry, too. I can attest.
@f00l Most of my activity has been at catshirtswoot, but the difference in activity now versus 5 years ago is huge.
Multi-page discussions are very very rare now.
@cranky1950
You’re cranky.
I’m cranky too.
Shit. : \
@OldCatLady
Oh my. You poor dear.
@sammydog01 what quitters!
@Ignorant
QUITTING IS FOR QUITTERS
@Ignorant Does quitting at quitting make you a bad quitter or an extra good one?
@sammydog01 " I must quit to continue" Sarah Palin
@sammydog01 Maybe it makes them too legit …
(MC Hammer on the oldies station? Fuck I’m getting old!)
@sammydog01 Boycotts are hard- there’s a somewhat famous picture of the Modern Warfare 2 Steam group that was boycotting the lack of dedicated servers for the game, and you can see about 15-20 people in the image playing Modern Warfare 2 on or close to launch day.
@dashcloud I know, I give myself a 50% chance of going back. Maybe 60. OK 90.
@sammydog01 Use the die.
/roll 1d100
You rolled a total of 85
@sammydog01 Maybe just set yourself a challenge that you can’t use wootstalker to look at the items, only Woot’s site itself. That should make it much easier to not buy anything, because you’ll have a lot of trouble even figuring out what to buy.
@dashcloud Let’s see what /giphy thinks.
/giphy finding stuff on Woot.
Yeah, that sums things up.
@dashcloud Hey now, maybe you should take the view that you should ONLY buy through wootstalker, that way, more of your hard earned cash is going to me instead of them.
@lichme My hard earned cash goes to buy crap, monkeys, and two dollar t-shirts. I’m not exactly their big spending target demographic.
For those following along, here’s the thread on Woot to say adieu to the writers and other staff members.
http://www.woot.com/forums/viewpost.aspx?postid=7173125
@Shrdlu I was just going to post this. Thank you.
Looks like kids.woot and accessories.woot have also been laid off, effective immediately.
@lichme
@lichme Woot has gotten too big as it is. The current count on WootStalker is 5,689 active items, which is even more than the typical Costco (about 4,000 items).
@lichme Beat me to it. Just posted something in the woot forums.
@narfcake
@KDemo @lichme @narfcake @snapster @dave
5,689 items? But… ‘one deal a day’…
@PlacidPenguin To keep that slogan, they could either reduce the item count … or reduce the deal count.
Feel free to guess on which way they went …
/giphy one deal a day
@lichme TT has promised ‘more info in a bit in a handsomely written blog’. I keep hearing
’So long, farewell,auf wiedersehen, good night’ from ‘The Sound Of Music’.
I wonder if somewhere there is a planet that rotates once every 15 seconds. Then they’d have 5760 days in each of our days.
@OldCatLady Pfffffft. Not happening.
@PlacidPenguin There maybe tons of sales each day, but there is still only one deal a day, you just gotta find the needle in the haystack
@dave
I’d say something about them having HQ in Texas, but then Mediocre would need to change their strategy.
@lichme @del
Heh.
@lichme Today it seems to be more Wellington wine. @f00l appears to like the stuff. http://www.woot.com/category/wine?ref=sh_gh_wn_8
@lichme I can’t help but think of that old joke, “The food is terrible, and the portions are so small!”
@OldCatLady
Yeah I did grab that Wellington.
It seems I am a sucker for the “It’s going away forever, this is the last of the last” routine.
Only this time the whole “going out of business” sign isn’t a fake. The vineyards belong to another now. : (
@f00l @oldcatlady I stopped buying wine online at my wife’s request. I think my last purchase was 3 years ago and it was Wellington from woot. Even back then they were saying “get it now, because this is it!”
@adq @slydon @titsmcgee Have you considered doing a column or something similar on Meh? @glennf does a fantastic column every once in a while (https://meh.com/forum/topics/building-the-plane-on-the-way-up as an example), and I would love to see whatever you might come up with.
@dashcloud sure how much do they pay
@dashcloud I’ve got a “pooping dogs” photo collection idea I’ve been tossing around.

@mossygreen my impression was that it was closer to his Smokey And The Bandit character.
Regarding Woot’ reimmed down categories, a couple of threads:

Hmmm.

Fun from the Woot forums!

I am a well known idiot.
@f00l I liked looking at it, but then, you know me and my idiosyncrasies. Plus, we now have it saved, in case there are any more, uh, disappearing words.
@f00l Can’t even begin to read that tiny text.
@KDemo
Then just use your imagination. : )
@Narfcake was magnificent btw.
@Barney
That’s one of the reasons I copied it over here. Because of all those “somewhat interesting text edits”.
@f00l You’re not a total idiot.
@Barney
Dammit, Yes I Am.
How dare you.
@KDemo I zoomed it!
@snapster, would you roll back time and undo the woot sale if you could?
Curious minds and all . . .
@KDemo But then, would we have Meh? A single butterfly…
You don’t think Mediocre is better for all the journey here? I suspect that going down that road was helpful in figuring out the direction he wanted to go.
@djslack - Me? I just wondered how snapster felt. It has to be painful to see your brainchild destroyed.
I agree that the experience certainly lit the mediocre spark and fanned the flame.
@snapster - No, it just reinforces your business wizard reputation.
@KDemo i didn’t think about that side of it.
@snapster I’m enjoying it.
@snapster
Condolences/Schadenfreude/Congrats then.
Living well, as they say, …
@f00l Schadenfreude is a beautiful thing.
