I don’t know about this one in particular, but previous cheap routers I’ve used had problems like tiny NAT tables that would crash if you had too many connections open. Or crash if too many devices connected (like more than 10). Or crash if certain devices connected (it just hated Intel wireless cards). Or flake out and start a packet storm with itself (spewing out duplicate packets as fast as it could) until you rebooted it. Or the firmware has a bug where it allows anybody to connect to your network and the company doesn’t believe in firmware updates for devices more than 6 days old.
What you save in money you’re going to lose in aspirin for your headaches trying to keep the stupid thing working.
@hchavers Indications from Amazon seem to be to the negative. Honestly, based on price point and brand, it’s a router designed for people who probably don’t even know what MIMO is and was built to a budget accordingly.

The once a week or if frequently used upload and download bandwidth every few days reseting them to refresh the signal was annoying to say the least. Since ive been upgrading every few years with newer versions I’ve not but maybe a handful of times had to cold cycle it. Very reliable products.
Im not being provided a kickback of any kind in recommending such TPlink company nor do i work for them. Thats just my honest customer opinion about a product I stumbled upon on Amazon years ago. Ever since I dropped my pay monthly to rent a fucking modem/router from ISP. Also, from experience its best to get stand alone units rather than 2 in 1 devices even if you decide to buy another brand.

If you have a good router already, this probably won’t be better, but if you’re using whatever garbage your ISP gave you, or haven’t upgraded in a few years, this is likely to be a big step up at a decent price. You’ll pay double for lower performance if you walk into a Best Buy/Staples/Walmart/whatever looking for a new router.
This looks like it should be a rebranded something else, but I can’t find anything it matches, and OpenWRT doesn’t have any support for this under the name “TAP-R3” or the brand “Amped”.
The only AC1750 OpenWRT seems to know of is a TP-Link, to which this is unfavorably compared at Amazon, so it’s probably not the same thing.
@yeppers I picked up an “Amped” extender from goodwill once for a couple bux. It worked but was not an improvement over my existing router. I got an upgrade to a newer router from my isp (Comcast) and my range went to hell. They then, of course, recommended their proprietary mesh system. I bought a Netgear Nighthawk mesh capable extender for about $150. That thing rules! Super fast!! I have it centrally located and I plug my computer directly into it when I’m at my desk. It also has USB for a network share or ftp. It also provides a separate visitor network in both 5 and 2.4GHz. It has been well worth the money.
@GeckoD higher frequency = lower range and coverage. You are almost always better on 2.4Ghz which is plenty faster than most people’s internet. Unless it’s saturated. wifi “6” offers some other improvements especially for large number of devices used simultaneously. IF you have a super fast connection to back it. Most of the US has shit internet. And your devices might not support it anyway

Appears to have the design of a Securifi Almond, which was a kickstarter several years ago, although they’ve stuck an extra antenna on it. The screen and back design with the Ethernet ports looks identical to one I have that I don’t use any more
Sure they both are Black, have Touch Screens, and they both went with a Metro UI inspired UX design for their touch screen interfaces, but that seems to be where the similarities end…

It doesn’t look anything like the latest version. The 2013 version sits at an angle, has ports part-way up the back that are covered by the stand, and a touch screen. It’s so odd looking that Amp, whoever they are, had to have taken the design from the old kickstarter version. Seems very unlikely that they would independently arrive at the same design decisions.

I think you’ll find if you look around that angling displays on devices (your device is angled in its entirety because the screen is integral to their simplistic industrial design) is a standard practice across the electronics industry.
Some nonsense about making their devices more user friendly by providing a more natural viewing angle in their expected application.
Crazy, right? I thought for sure it was just an artistic decision.
They even do it with interfaces that people need to interact with using things other than their eyes, like their fingers.
Similarly, it’s quite common for devices that are wall mountable to have ports located in an orientation such that the cords emerging from them will not come into conflict with the wall with regard to who has a right to exist in a given bit of space. Sure, they could just recess them deeply within the body of the device, but that has inconvenient consequences for the low profile design they wanted to make. You’d no doubt be surprised to hear that these same ports are often set back any number of inches from the edge of the device, where they would often be far easier to work with from a manufacturing and assembly point of view, to facilitate the concealment of the aforementioned cables behind the device when wall mounted. Don’t believe me? Go check out a modern television when you get a chance.

Sites like Meh get items for liquidation that often come from more generic brands that don’t sell as well or whose shelf space is more valuable than its margins once at clearance prices, or from companies that are going out of business (for example, Palm Coolers (great cooler BTW) was a YETI wannabe brand that went out of business). For some products it’s not a big deal to be a generic or B-brand item, but for electronics it’s obviously a much more significant thing.

I don’t expect to find anything life-changing or outstanding deals but for entertainment value, it’s just kind of fun. Something quick to do before I head off to bed.
On the plus side, I’ve found some things my wife really likes: a power bank that dangles from her purse, a purse that she really likes (this is a woman who takes great pride in her collection of Dooney Burke purses - so kind of surprising there), some actually nice pearl strings (she had none so it was a nice addition). Anyway, she was also a meh naysayer but she’s coming around and enjoying the landfiller that I’ve been buying here for her.
Oh…and my first and only IRK did have some decent stuff in it that made it worth way more than the $5 price (mainly a pretty decent power bank). Suffice it to say, I don’t depend on meh but I find a few items now and then that are worth the gamble.

Funny enough, I actually am still using an N300 Router that they specifically say that they deliver “6X more speed than”. And I’ve been having trouble with that one anyway dropping everything from my wifi (too many devices, maybe?). I’ll bite, if anything to have an extender to lighten the load off my 10 year old router.
I had one of their Access Points until a couple of years ago. (Still do, actually - it’s in the closet somewhere in case my current WAP ever craps out.) Their gear was pretty well spec’ed in comparison with what was available at the time, well built, and trouble-free. Hello cheap WiFi repeater for work. Worst case and it fails I pilot off on my sister-in-law, who’s router is an even bigger joke than this.

Funny enough, I actually am still using an N300 Router that they specifically say that they deliver “6X more speed than”. And I’ve been having trouble with that one anyway dropping everything from my wifi (too many devices, maybe?). I’ll bite, if anything to have an extender to lighten the load off my 10 year old router.
Talked to my tech guy and was told to pass.
I had one of their Access Points until a couple of years ago. (Still do, actually - it’s in the closet somewhere in case my current WAP ever craps out.) Their gear was pretty well spec’ed in comparison with what was available at the time, well built, and trouble-free. Okay I picked one up for our conference room. Mostly because it has a clock and it won’t be on our internal network. If it lasts a year it is worth it

It’s got a USB port so should be good as a Nas storage space or to setup a network printer
Just got one. Works well to deliver WiFi throughout the house, but when I change the SSID and password it reflects the change in the interface, but doesn’t change what it broadcasts. super weird…meh…
