We love the snarky comments it displays, and the weather forecasts aren’t too shabby either [well, except that they keep being right about frigid cold and lake effect snows…]
My personal go to is one of those kinda weird YouTube improvisational jazz channels. They are truly background music for whatever book you choose and a good cuppa (coffee or cocoa depending on your muse)
@aetris “The Wolves of Willoughby Chase!”
I read that when I was a kid and I loved it so much that I insisted on recounting the whole story to my parents’ kind and patient friend who was visiting for the day! I should look that up and read it again.
@Kyeh - Nightbirds on Nantucket was actually my favorite of the books, but the Brit tv version of Wolves is a hoot if you like almost but not QUITE jumping the shark. Or wolf, in this case. Filmed in real snow in Czechia!
@sammydog01 Huh, I’ve never heard of that!
I’ve been watching a show set in New Zealand that’s kind of good, although I could use subtitles sometimes; it’s called The Brokenwood Mysteries. Not quite tropical but awfully lush.
We loved all of these- and I liked the Chaos Walking movie so much, that I bought the book trilogy in Kindle format, and there are also 4 short stories in Kindle format that prequel and epilogue them- but I have yet to read them because I’m still reading an urban fantasy triple trilogy by Michael Anderle called “How to be a Badass… [Witch/Vigilante/Detective]”.
He has to be one of the most prolific independent writer/publishers ever- and he has mentored a whole bunch of others into collaborators and stand-alone authors in a bunch of related and not-so-related genres [mainly Sci-Fi, and other fantasy adjacent niches].
I have yet to read anything by him and/or his collaborators that didn’t enthrall me and make me snort or LOL- for real.
Lots of snark always.
Although, the current one I’m trying to finish is the closest to not really grabbing me- it’s somewhat more YA than the usual fare he writes, so I’m less invested with the characters.
@aetris
Yep. We stayed several days just above Deshaies. Had a blast. I may try to start a thread about that trip once I actually finish unpacking and sorting out pics.
@chienfou
[And/Or] Burn Notice- we loved the whole dang thing…
Bruce Campbell, Jeffrey Donovan, Gabrielle Anwar, and Sharon Gless- made a really good ensemble cast.
It always seemed to have a fair mix of drama and humor, so it hit us in just the right way.
(Note: this post was created from a place where my phone’s weather app just gave me the “it’s cold enough to kill you” warning, so show it some love.)
@jouest
Is your app WTF [What the Forecast]?

@PhysAssist no but I love it
Well, my favorite is To Kill a Mockingbird so let’s start there.
Well, I’m sure spotify or pandora would give you a winter music list if you searched for it.
A quick search came up with this

Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express is pretty snowy if you like classic mystery. I prefer the David Suchet version.
Bellairs’ The Face in the Frost is a hoot imho and a quick read if you want a fantasy book.
Straubs’ Ghost Story film version is pretty seasonal if you like horror.
Masefields’ The Box of Delights WAS seasonal and the BBC tv version is great if you like Christmas magic.
Helprin’s Winter’s Tale is a long but amusing read if you like off-the-wall ambition.
Aiken’s The Wolves of Willoughby Chase is a wild pseudo-Victorian melodrama if you like that kind of thing and the film version is ok imho.
What kind of thing do you like?

@aetris I never knew they made a film - maybe I’ll check it out sometime. Like in July, when it’s in the 90s outside!
It’s 8 degrees here; I don’t want to read or watch wintery things! I’d much rather watch “Death in Paradise” or something set on a tropical island.
@Kyeh There’s a show called Almost Paradise on Freevee that I like. The tropics, humor, and violence.
@sammydog01 Huh, I’ve never heard of that!

I also love me a ton of the Baen Books authors- and they have amazing book bundle deals on their website periodically.
https://www.baen.com/
They also have a ton of free downloadable books, short stories, and even nonfiction titles [usually hard sciencey].
I especially like a bunch of Eric Flint [Ring of Fire series] and John Ringo’s [Council Wars series] books.
But I’m both a nerd and a geek, so YMMV.
Binge watch Death in Paradise…
(as an aside I was just at the Honore Police Station)
@chienfou Wow! I can’t wait to see some photos …
@chienfou - In Guadeloupe?

My favorite winter book is Winter Thunder by Mari Sandoz. it’s about the blizzard of 1949.
@kjady hell with it, reading it.
Me personally, I love horror, so start simple with Scary Stories to tell in the Dark. Next; The Shining.
