June 3. Day 19. My food’s gone. The water in here still works and my Winix keep the air scrubbed. No way I’m melting. In a few more days though, I’ll starve.
The streets outside are busy again, but there’s still no orders coming in and no one’s been by to pick up their repair. I don’t know what’s happening. I turned on the news on the TV, and everything seemed fine. If the world ended, no one seems to have noticed.
I called Joshua again. That asshole still hasn’t paid me for that weird amplifier he needed built. I don’t know why anyone would want to run text messages through an analog synthesizer, but he sure did. Doesn’t seem to want to pay for it though - doesn’t seem to want to answer his phone, neither.
I have an old backpack. A Winix weighs 17.6 pounds, and I have a gas generator on a cart. With a little engineering and a little luck, I might be able to go portable and leave the office. That’s my plan for tomorrow. If it doesn’t go well, this might be my last journal entry. It’s been fun.
@mommacomet Me too. All the great things they offered on Saturdays. I don’t think I will be able to sleep tonight because of this. Why-oh-why Meh? My heart is broken.
@mommacomet I know. I was all excited to come to Meh this morning. It’s my birthday and I was all ready to give myself permission to buy whatever random bundle of stuff they had for cheap today even though I really didn’t need it and wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it (except the candy corn. I like candy corn.). But, no, Meh had to be all, “Here’s something moderately useful at a reasonable but above impulse buying price point.”
Bought one of these on a previous Meh offering. Liked it a lot. My better half talked me into giving it to an elderly friend who has breathing difficulties. Now, thanks to some anonymous Meh buyer, I get to breathe, too. And the order name fits me.
Everybody win(ix)s!
Got one from W–t for $65 a few weeks ago and I like it a lot. Filters are a standard size and are cheap. This is made in Korea and there is a real company behind the product.
Costco people rate the C535 decent overall. Costco one came with 2 sets of filters and the unit is new at $139. Complaints of a fan imbalance noise which I’m guessing was the refurb reason possibly.
@Stallion This is the exact issue with the one I bought earlier this year from Costco through Google Express. My Costco membership had expired one month later, which was conveniently about the time the fan started making an annoying clicking noise. They couldn’t exchange it for the same price, and only offered to give me a gift card for the discounted amount. This meant that I would be unable to buy another at the normal price because it was no longer on sale. Google Express was ZERO help, and Winix wanted me to pay the shipping to return it under warranty, which I thought was a goddamn joke. Also, I clean the pre-filter every two weeks as the manual suggests, but I don’t feel that it works nearly as well as it did when I first bought it.
Awesome! Been needing one as we’re working on an old house. Good enough price to get two and clean up the guest room too. I like the washable filter… any idea on how long it lasts?
Although neither of these exact model s are listed on the Energystar site, I’m betting that l will be able to claim my yearly $40 rebate for one from my electric supplier, so in for 2 ahead of our upcoming bathroom remodeling.
I received mine today (black 6300-2) and it only had one carbon filter included, NOT 3.
(Also, no manual…but the Winix website has a pdf manual for the 5500-2 model which tells how all the modes/buttons work, and the only detail that appears to be different is that my model takes filter type A instead of H.)
@summetj – Mine had 4 carbon filters all stuck together in a plastic bag. It looked like there was only 1 in there but it was actually 4 that you had to peel apart. I don’t know if that’s the case with you. Definitely call the company and I’m sure they’ll send 3 more out to you. I think they’re supposed to have pretty good customer service. Good luck and thanks again for your help!
@spurnky Not mine, it had the HEPA filter and a carbon filter inside a single plastic bag (shipped inside the air filter unit). I tested the carbon filter, but it’s just one, and doesn’t separate. (it’s only 1/4" thick)
@summetj – That is such a bummer! I’m sorry that happened to you. Thankfully you have one for now so you can use the unit until you get more. I bet this happened to other people too. Just like the fact there’s no manuals in the boxes. They should always put a manual in a box! Did you contact Winix and let them know so they can get more shipped out to you?
@spurnky@summetj Should’t Meh be dealing with this? They’re the ones who said what we’d be getting I didnt get a manual or the carbon filters. Still no response from Meh
If you have breathing difficulties it’s best to leave the ionizer off. If you don’t have breathing problems leave it off anyway: ionizers aren’t good at eliminating odors anyways.
@Stallion I have a different model (3 actually) and these are the only air purifiers that have a noticeable effect that I’ve ever seen. In fact, it does so well that sometimes the air is too stale. The famous, " you can fart by these things and it will kick into high" is verafiably true. It may not mean anything but I’m sorry, that’s pretty awesome. Great for the kitchen as that’s where most indoor air pollution occurs. Most of the time, anyway.
I have a similar model and a replacement filter set almost costs this much. These are like those cheap inkjet printers you buy and then replace when the ink runs out.
@cbsarge One year filter is about $20 on AZN for this model. I just bought one. It’s a standard size, so if you shop around carefully you will find better prices for this model.
Anyone know if this will work in an old dorm room with enough stale air to probably cause plague and all sorts of respiratory things? My son had lots of interesting maladies last semester and one Urgent Care bill alone pays for this
I have two bits of bad news about this Air Purifier that was sold back in April.
Winix (as of a month ago when I contacted them) says they don’t authorize reburbishment of their products and don’t cover refurbished items under warranty.
The one I got started out fantastically quiet but eventually started making a clanking sound. The guys meh asked me to contact (not Winix) just sent me a video suggesting that I fix it myself.
The good news? The refurbisher said that only 1 in 1000 fail like mine did.
FYI: I emailed Meh about the original issue and followed up correcting them about the warranty situation yet they continue to advertise a non-existant warranty coverage.
For anyone who got one, I just did the repair and it was pretty straight forward if you have a wrench or pliers and follow the instructions. One set of screws was screwed in different holes, but you’ll figure I out.
So I have a loser brother that lives in the enclosed garage and smokes pot most of the day. The smell of the weed gives my wife headaches. I need a straight up answer on will this combat the smell of his pot smoke?
I have a very dusty house. I don’t have central heat and air (a killer in TN in the summer, just one window A/C unit) and I live in a farm with dogs tracking things in and out. Will this get rid of the dust?
I received mine today and there was no manual included at all. No instructions … nothing. I have no idea how to set it up or use it. Did this happen to anyone else? I ordered the Black one (6300-2).
@spurnky I didn’t even bother looking for the manual, but I don’t think there was one in mine either. However, inside the front panel is a graphic indicating order the filters are to be installed. Unsnap the pre filter, unwrap the HEPA filter and reinstall, install the carbon filter, then reinstall the pre-filter and cover. The buttons should be pretty self explanatory.
I did actually get 4 carbon filters this time, unlike the previous deal, but in sleep mode, the new unit has a more noticeable noise then the 5500 it was replacing. The automatic sleep mode is really handy though.
@kuoh – WOW! Thank you so much for the info. You are AWESOME! I’m going to do it right now. I really appreciate the help because I’ve never had this brand before. I’ve had other brands of course but never one like this one. Thanks again! Have a great rest of the day.
@summetj – WOW! Another AWESOME Meh Member. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the link to the manual. That will help so much. I can’t tell you how grateful I am. I checked their website earlier but they didn’t have the 2 models listed anymore. Having the manual you gave me will be great. Thanks again! Have a great rest of the day.
I ordered one of each. The C535 came with HEPA and 4 charcoal filters. The 6300-2 came with no filters at all. No HEPA or charcoal, only the pre-filter. Amazon carries a set (of what was supposed to be included) for $26.99
@arfdawg You probably need to contact Meh CS. The actual amount of filters included seems to be one of the consistent inconsistencies with these Winix refurbs.
I bought the C535 and it is making the clicking noise (actually sounds more like if someone dropped a small piece of plastic inside of a fan). This is only my third meh purchase - what’s the return/refund policy?
A: If it’s damaged, defective, or just DOA, we’ll either refund or replace it at our discretion. Just fill out our support form and tell us all about it.
We DO NOT accept returns if you just decided you didn’t want it, don’t like the color, or just feeling a little buyer’s remorse. You might try eBay - with as cheap as you probably got it, you could even end up making a little off it. Or hone your reputation for generosity by giving it to someone a little less picky.
@djm1216@TheMeerkat Their ticket volume is ALWAYS high, so that’s sort of meaningless. I’m surprised no one has at least said they are looking into it. I’m missing 6 filters
Follow-up: Meh replied that the units are covered under 90 day Winix warranty. I contacted Winix who immediately knew Meh is selling refurbished units and said they are not covered under warranty. Has anyone else called about the warranty and were you successful?
@arfdawg Yep, and here’s the kicker. Winix flat out said that they do not cover the warranty (“Mediocre corp is reselling refurbished Costco units and we do not offer any warranty on those”) So Meh was knowingly misleading by saying it was covered by Winix and the link points to Winix’s page. The next step is to dispute the charge on my credit card.
Meh gave me this guy to get my missing filters. You could try him for your problem: Dong Shin Lee kevin.lee@yjicorp.com But if you look at a couple posts above here, meh says you can return defective items and they provide a link to a form to fill out.
I wrote before about this. I’m missing 6 carbon filters (3 for each unit bought). You gave me an email kevin.lee@yjicorp.com and said he would send the filters
He’s not being responsive and I cannot use the units without the filters.

@dtertman To you, I say “Bravo”.
Hepa, Hepa, hooray
I miss bundle Saturdays.
@mommacomet You can always buy a bunch of these and make your own bundle…
@mommacomet Me too. All the great things they offered on Saturdays. I don’t think I will be able to sleep tonight because of this. Why-oh-why Meh? My heart is broken.
@mommacomet @wrallredsr I miss the old Meh. We should make that into a shirt.
@mommacomet I know. I was all excited to come to Meh this morning. Meh, I think it’s time we clear the air…
Do these purify the air of methane from legume processing? My wife wants relief.
@hchavers that would probably depend on the overall emission rate, concentration and volume…
@ELJAY let’s just say we dont burn candles in the house after meals.
@ELJAY @hchavers Actually, burning the methane (turning it into CO2 amd H2O) is far, far better than sharing it with the rest of the world.
What you really want is something that captures, removes, or converts Hydrogen Sulfide and the aerosol feces particulates from your seat cushions.

Yeah, he delivers “pizza” to us too. He’s the one who knocks…
@gymbrall @satyenshah @shahnm slow clap That was just too awesome to overlook! Plus thanks for the reminder! I need to watch BB again…

@paulg1982 This is not an ionizer, according to the manual. Does not produce ozone.
Anyone own one and recommend it? And which of the 2 models looks sleeker?
@Stallion Sleekness is in the eye of the Meholder…
@Stallion I have a different model (3 actually) and these are the only air purifiers that have a noticeable effect that I’ve ever seen. In fact, it does so well that sometimes the air is too stale. @Stallion See my note above. Nicest, quietest one I’ve used. Better engineering and less brute force as is found in the Honeywells.
I use Blueair purifiers. Does anybody know how they compare? Thanks!
Power consumption is 65? Units please. NoUnitsNoCredit
Will this make my “pet” cat “disappear”?

So, did anyone at Meh take these apart to confirm that they’re the same inside?
