I like to look around at best buy for items that i'm going to be looking at or touching to determine quality for myself. if I can't find it there or at walmart, I'm left trusting online reviews :/
Normally someone I know owns the product already so either I ask them about it or try it out. If not then I'm probably an early adapter and taking the risk on something I can't afford. Bendgate.
So many customer reviews on big e-Com are either supplier-sponsored, or straight up supplier written that it's tough for me to trust them. Friends and family usually do right by me...
I consult the entrails. You find a she-ram of no more than 10 moons then offer her to a shaman with a link to the product on amazon. I feel the rest is self explanatory.
My Magic 8-Ball has my back on most major decisions, purchase or otherwise.

I've had great results going with The Wirecutter. Amazon reviews are hit or miss. You have to do a lot of reading between the lines.
If I weren't swayed by whim, I'd never order anything here or from Woot.
My mother. Mom always knows best.

Reviews, research, and calculations.
I get a better idea on what NOT to buy from friends and relatives. Their judgement isn't always the best.
