Friggin 1950s construction. Only outlets in my kitchen are behind the stove and one for the fridge, which are on the same circuit as the washing machine and garage opener.
@TheGreatNico I think we had the same builder. A couple of nights ago, while microwaving, I went to wait by watching the tv. That blew the circuit breaker for both.
@TheGreatNico Actually, that is normal, as it’s not expected that everything will be running at the same time. Per the NEC, the limitation is the number of slots in the panel provided that the main breaker is sized for the panel.
@TheGreatNico HA! Try friggen 1900’s construction. 1 bedroom only had 1 outlet when we moved in. The kitchen was at least remodeled in the 80’s and has plenty of outlets. Pretty much every other room sucks. And the circuit breakers are all screwy, so if the microwave blows it becuase the fridge turns on, it kills the living room. One of these days maybe we can rewire the whole damn thing, but it sucks.
@TheGreatNico My early 1970s house has one plug on each wall in the LR and bedrooms. The kitchen is marginally better, with one on either side of the slider, but one of them is right in front of the stove, so I can’t leave anything plugged in there if I want to open the oven door.
My microwave and fridge are on the same circuit. They generally play well together, but if I run anything else on that circuit when those two are running, it trips the circuit breaker. At least the circuit box is in the kitchen, but there are some odd groupings in there, IIRC.
@lisagd@TheGreatNico 1985 house seems to have the same kind of outlet count. 1 per wall most rooms. Kitchen has, besides the ones hidden by the refrigerator and stove, one above each counter section, so not too bad, but all those kitchen ones are apparently on the same circuit, voltage drops when stuff is running. Microwave or toaster running, you can hear the hum of the refrigerator lower. Would really prefer to have multiple circuits, and probably higher rated wiring running to them.
@walarney Hmm, only reason I can think of that someone would put a bunch of outlets in a closet would be if they were using a bunch of grow lights in there. Even then, I’d expect someone doing that to be lazy and put 1 outlet and a bunch of power strips.
Actually now I thought of the other reason, server closet or bitcoin farm, etc.
@kevinrs@walarney if you’re running a thriving Marijuana business from your closet you’re going to do it right and not have a bunch of extension cords.
@OnionSoup@walarney Do people doing that actually do the behind the drywall work of installing a bunch of outlets though? With the damage that would be eventually done due to excess heat and humidity, I’m thinking they are usually thinking short term.
Is behind the computer the same as behind the TV? They are both entertainment systems, and more so since the pandemic when streaming replaced the traditional TV channel broadcast.
@chienfou@ELJAY There is one on the icky rusted light fixture but light fixture has failed. (A huge spark flew out of the newish light switch one day. I am not messing around with that.) I am using the Hex LED lamp I bought here as a bathroom light, for the moment.
@chienfou Yes, and they also have the same phone with them everywhere else they go…
But in the “old days” of pre-cordless telephone communication (i.e., before the mid 1980s), some people had telco run wiring and install extension phones in their bathrooms, usually on the wall, next to the ‘throne’, for easy access. It always seemed a little odd to me to whenever I saw one back then…
I think carrying on phone calls while excreting bodily wastes is uncultured, unnecessary, and unsanitary.
(Maybe it’s just me? )
My bathroom has one duplex GFCI outlet above the sink. It has a long, grounded cord looped over the mirrored cabinet and down to an outlet strip on the side of the vanity by the toilet for the bidet, plus a cube tap to provide more outlets above the sink. One of these days, I’ll add an outlet behind the toilet and others above the sink.
For me, “behind the TV” and “behind the computer” are the same place. When I mounted the 60" TV on an arm that allows it to swing out from the wall, I also added a narrow shelf for the computer and solved the outlet problem by adding a UPS to allow for clean shutdown of the computer and NAS.
Everywhere; house was built in 1959, and the damn panel is located where it’s essentially impossible to fish any more runs in, and add the outlets that are needed. Oh, and almost the entire house is wired with 14/2, so adding grounds is a pain in the ass, aggravated by the fact that some nimrod replaced the vertical water feed pipe from the ground into the house with PVC about 40 years ago, so I’ve had to add an actual grounding rod below the panel outside. (The pipe has a ground path at the back of the house, in the form of the run to the detached garage, but I like to keep the electrical path physically short For Reasons.)
@werehatrack
Sounds like our house. Over time i ripped out all the old wiring and re-did all of it. Now there are plenty of outlets EVERYWHERE except behind the TV due to the fact we put our modem and router there, have a desktop monitor and printer, a PlayStation, an Ooma, a base station for cordless speakers, a discard Kindle with charger to run the Pandora for the speakers and some more stuff i can’t think of I’m sure (I’m not home right now) Thankfully most all of it is on UPS strips so the 8 plugs (4 duplexes) i put in are enough until I need to add in a laptop charger etc…
LOTS of outlets on separate breakers in the kitchen because we like to cook, all walls have at least 2 duplexes. Over all plenty of outlets are available. 200 amp panal is full. Pool house and shop have separate meter.
I’m covered.
@chienfou@werehatrack I’m so glad that the local electric PUD rep recommended we install a 400 amp service (w/2 200 amp panels) when we built our house. An all-we-can-eat electron buffet! I was thankful once again when I recently added a 220v/50A outlet in the garage for an EV charger.
The basement (which is unfinished) but that’s where I’m setting up my craft room and just realized I’m setting up where’s there’s no outlet bc there’s no fucking outlets down there.
At the outlet mall that doesn’t have the store I’m looking for…
@shahnm yep, been to the Same Outlet mall or maybe it’s like Dollar General… they keep popping up every where, with unless stores.

@phendrick 180 amps in a breaker box rated for 100. Living on the edge baby
@TheGreatNico Actually, that is normal, as it’s not expected that everything will be running at the same time. Per the NEC, the limitation is the number of slots in the panel provided that the main breaker is sized for the panel.
@TheGreatNico Same, plus only one of the bedrooms has an outlet and the crackhead that installed it put it at eye level for some reason.

Behind the stereo, and again behind living room TV #2.
Probably best to keep outlets away from the sensory deprivation tank, but otherwise, All of the above.
@phendrick why? It makes it all the more Fun to have 1 in there!
@mycya4me “Fun” for the potential heirs?
In the bathtub. Stupid NEC.
Well, not on the ceiling in a bedroom closet. Pretty sure I’m covered for plugging in all my closet stuff.
@walarney Hmm, only reason I can think of that someone would put a bunch of outlets in a closet would be if they were using a bunch of grow lights in there. Even then, I’d expect someone doing that to be lazy and put 1 outlet and a bunch of power strips.

Everywhere. These apartments were designed for a simpler time and have few outlets. I have none in the bathroom, for instance.
@cf1
yikes. … Not even one in the light fixture? A lot of old homes had a plug built into the base of the bathroom’s vanity light fixture…
@cf1 @chienfou Yes, sometimes it was just two slots, and looked like this:
(The hole in the center is to mount the light to the wall, not the receptacle for a plug’s ground pin…)
@cf1 @ELJAY
I’ve seen them on the outside edge of the frame also which made them even harder to spot
@chienfou @ELJAY There is one on the icky rusted light fixture but light fixture has failed. (A huge spark flew out of the newish light switch one day. I am not messing around with that.) I am using the Hex LED lamp I bought here as a bathroom light, for the moment.
Nowhere, built our house. They are everywhere I need. Including the toilet should I get a bidet.
@MrMark
You have an outlet next to the toilet? Do you have a phone there too?
@MrMark @Star2236
Virtually everyone has one there now!
@chienfou Yes, and they also have the same phone with them everywhere else they go…

Nope… You are correct! I don’t need to talk to you THAT badly. I can wait. Call me back!
In the murder shed!

Hotel rooms
If dogs were truly man’s best friend, they would have power outlets built into them. I want to be able to plug a TV into my dog.

Time for a subpanel!
