Where else am I supposed to store all my gear for the zombie apocalypse? It’s a wearable go-bag. I mean, more wearable than a go-bag. But also worse, and less comfortable.
@PlacidPenguin Unless you’re a woman. Designers must feel we don’t deserve decent sized pockets. Best feeling in the world is to buy a particular item of clothing and discover it has proper pockets. Pockets that can hold more than a dime and a hair scrunchie! A skirt with pockets is a rare thing. Eshakti.com is great for custom clothing. Add pockets, deepen necklines, lengthen inseams, all changes for under $12. Of course, their clothing is a bit fuddy duddy, but sometimes I can find something which suits my style.
I’m a diabetic and a Dad. I need all the goddamned pockets I can get! I wish they’d jam more pockets into them! Thankfully, Duluth Trading Company has kept me well supplied in these lean years for the cargo pocket-bottomed cadre.
@LinnE I actually own a couple of cargo skorts. The pockets are too small for carrying anything, they are mostly for show. I too miss the painters pants.
Well just the other day I ordered a pair of tactical pants that are a bit cargo style for work. Since the poll is usually related to the next days item women’s tan extra long tactical pants size 10 would be great
@CaptAmehrican I bought a pair of tactical pants a few years ago. I love how they feel and fit and all the pockets I could ever want but the damn zipper will not stay zipped!
Once discovered, that’s all my husband wore until the day he died. He actually had cargo pocket sweats on when he passed. He was like a little kid with his pockets stuffed. He really needed a purse but… that wasn’t happenin’.
Haven’t worn cargo pants since high school, but I do have a few pairs of shorts in my regular summer rotation. Granted, they’re not my “going out” shorts, but they are definitely there to stay.
And they’re also sold in current, popular retail establishments (Gap, American Eagle, Urban Outfitters), so they can’t be entirely out of fashion, right? Right?
i said never, but then i remembered that my baby pink backpack-transforming UFOs with the iridescent ribbons could probably be considered a type of cargo pants. every laundry day my freshman year of college i wore those pants. five flights between me and the machines and i could carry the bag of clothes while those pants held detergent tabs in one side and dryer sheets in the other.
@RiotDemon me too i had ‘girly’ ones where the material was thin and soft (but still denim) and also glittery. i wore those to death. seriously so comfortable!
Cargo shorts are great for travel days. Each item can have it’s own dedicated pocket for easy access. (phone, ID, boarding pass, gum/mints, etc…)
Also great for walking around theme parks when on vacation. Snacks, water bottle, ziplock bag with water-sensitive things in it, sun block, etc…
I find carpenter pants are a nice compromise. They have a couple extra pockets that are unobtrusive but super handy, the back pockets tend to be bigger, and they’re easy to find in denim, canvas, and khaki. They’re the only kind of pants I wear for everyday use.
I have a couple pairs of cargo shorts for informal warm weather stuff and travel days. My only defense is they’re the type with folded/low profile pockets so they’re not bulging off my legs, and I pretty much only use them to store flat items. I also have two pairs of convertible hiking pants (I only use them for hiking) that have some extra pockets, though I’m not sure they qualify as cargoes.
Based on what I see around here and elsewhere, cargo pants are much more of a fashion faux pas than cargo shorts. Even though some claim shorts are a reason for shame, I still see a lot of people wearing them. Pants seem to be much rarer and do cause more of a sense of fashion shaming.
All of my non-dress pants are ‘cargo’ styled (except my jeans), as are virtually all of my shorts. All my favorite scrubs also have extra pockets on the legs.
Pockets are great!
I am pleasantly surprised by how many defenders of cargo shorts are here. I remember seeing a poll where an over-whelming majority (in the neighborhood of 80-90%) of respondents saying a wife would be justified if she threw out her husband’s cargo shorts without his permission.
I contend that the functionality outweighs whatever perceived fashion short-coming they may have. Obviously I wouldn’t wear them to a formal gathering or the like, but for daily wear, I love them.
@DrWorm I think it also depends on the type. There’s a big difference between solid color, slim profile, cut at or above the knee cargo shorts and way-below-the-knee, camo/patterned, bulging pocket ones. I wear the former, but wouldn’t ever be caught in the latter.
@DrWorm I think that’s rediculous. Where does she expect him to put all the junk she brought with her but then doesn’t want to carry if she throws out his shorts? Never mind the kids stuff
How many people are going to be wearing pants at midnight, anyway?
@lljk Guess that depends on how their Valentine’s day went…
@lljk some people want to be ready for their dreams. (That is what I tell myself)
Do they make cargo pantsuits?
Where else am I supposed to store all my gear for the zombie apocalypse? It’s a wearable go-bag. I mean, more wearable than a go-bag. But also worse, and less comfortable.
I am 40. Between these and khakis, this is all I have. Leave me alone.
@cubedweller It’s Half Price Candy Day today. Celebrate!
I actually wore cargo shorts today, I love them!
My husband lives in cargo shorts. Getting him to put on anything else (even in winter or to a wedding) is hard work.
@primrosewater a very practical man, always ready to cary somthing.
@hchavers Yet for some reason he often asks me to put his wallet/phone/keys in my purse… I need to figure out what he’s carrying.
@primrosewater Hell yeah.
I have some cargo pants I need to wear out so I can throw them away.
I pick on my cop friends for wearing cargo pants all the time.
I still wear them. Fuck style, and the cool kids.
(plus, the minute I throw them away they will be back in style)
@mfladd And with the ever-increasing size of phones, you gotta have pockets big enough to carry them.

@thejackalope
7 years ago I made a joke to somebody that phones would get to a point that they would require larger pockets.
@PlacidPenguin Unless you’re a woman. Designers must feel we don’t deserve decent sized pockets. Best feeling in the world is to buy a particular item of clothing and discover it has proper pockets. Practicality over rules fashion. I want a cargo jacket.
This is all I have to say to cargo short-haters.
@cpierce I’ve definitely smuggled burgers into movie theaters in a similar fashion
@spitfire6006006
Errr…
In somebody else’s pants?
I’m a diabetic and a Dad. I need all the goddamned pockets I can get! I wish they’d jam more pockets into them! Thankfully, Duluth Trading Company has kept me well supplied in these lean years for the cargo pocket-bottomed cadre.
@guyfromhawthorn Looks like I need to fish that catalog that arrived yesterday out of the trash can.
@LaVikinga I recommend the DuluthFlex Firehose ones - if there’s ever anything that wears out, they’ll swap them out for the rest of your life
/giphy cargo shorts
Took way too many tries. But giphy finally struck gold.
More damned pockets than your heart can desire! Man, the times I missed a ballpoint pen, or wad of Kleenex when doing Mr. Swagger’s laundry.
And no, I don’t know these guys. Fighter pukes.
I’m a woman, and an old. No cargo pants/shorts, but I did rock painter’s pants back in the day.
@LinnE I miss those.
@LinnE I actually own a couple of cargo skorts. The pockets are too small for carrying anything, they are mostly for show. I too miss the painters pants.
Yo Napoleon, gimme some of your tots.
Well just the other day I ordered a pair of tactical pants that are a bit cargo style for work. Since the poll is usually related to the next days item women’s tan extra long tactical pants size 10 would be great
@CaptAmehrican In your dreams that will happen LOL. Sounds like the diet is still going well?
@CaptAmehrican I bought a pair of tactical pants a few years ago. I love how they feel and fit and all the pockets I could ever want but the damn zipper will not stay zipped!
Once discovered, that’s all my husband wore until the day he died. He actually had cargo pocket sweats on when he passed. He was like a little kid with his pockets stuffed. He really needed a purse but… that wasn’t happenin’.
@lseeber my dad’s like that. Takes him half an hour to unload all the crap in his cargo short pockets
@hac Yup.
Haven’t worn cargo pants since high school, but I do have a few pairs of shorts in my regular summer rotation. Granted, they’re not my “going out” shorts, but they are definitely there to stay.

I’ve been a ScottEvest fan for years. Stealth mode cargo pants, and every other possible garment as well.

@jerk_nugget that may be the most ugly pants i have ever seen.
@jerk_nugget ok. I kinda love the grey ones. This is coming from someone who seriously regrets selling her JNCOs.
@RiotDemon me too i had ‘girly’ ones where the material was thin and soft (but still denim) and also glittery. i wore those to death. seriously so comfortable!
@jerk_nugget I wore men’s pants then. The skunks and kangaroos were my favorite.
I’m amused that JNCO still makes them.

@medz its nice till you forget whats in what pocket lol ive done that a bunch of times!
I find carpenter pants are a nice compromise. They have a couple extra pockets that are unobtrusive but super handy, the back pockets tend to be bigger, and they’re easy to find in denim, canvas, and khaki. They’re the only kind of pants I wear for everyday use.
@dannybeans Except for when the hammer loop gets caught on a door handle.
@medz That used to happen to me a lot. Then I learned to open doors without humping them.
(Seriously, though, it’s not really a problem for me.)
@dannybeans @medz … or the kitchen cabinet/bathroom vanity handles…
@chienfou @dannybeans and the 3/4 hoop earrings of short Puerto Rican women…
@chienfou I try not to hump those, either.
@chienfou @dannybeans @medz omg i just died laughing

@Kabn I have Meh t-shirts, ask me how much I care about fashion.
I wear cargo shorts literally every day. Have to wear decent pants to work though, unfortunately.
@Al_Coholic Forgot to mention, I also sleep in them.
@Al_Coholic Sleep in them!?! Now that’s going to far, unless you need a pocket for your teddy, pocket for your blankie, then I get it.
@Al_Coholic my 11 year old attempted to do that the other day and I was like nope take them off! Legos in every pocket lol
All of my non-dress pants are ‘cargo’ styled (except my jeans), as are virtually all of my shorts. All my favorite scrubs also have extra pockets on the legs.

Well that was a pleasant surprise.
