Depends. Are the cell towers out? If not the phone and the tablet work. I’ve even sat and streamed TV shows and watch them. It’s raining does you’re sitting in the dark you do what you need to do
@phendrick Mostly ok. I lost a mulberry tree, there are some other trees down nearby, but not as many as there would have been if that derecho hadn’t torn holy hell out of the area in mid-May. Our electric service probably won’t be back on until Friday.
@werehatrack Many trees down here ɓut few caused property damage. My yard had many pieces of tree that were due to be shed, but nothing big this time. Some flash flooding areas Monday, but mostly OK now away from creeks & rivers. We didn’t lose power, but my central air unit quit in the middle of the night yesterday. Woke up sweating about 2 a.m. when the dog wanted a walk. Knew something was wrong when it was cooler outside than in the house. Fan wasn’t turning. Got up past 90 in the house. Spun it up by hand! Been running OK since.
Probabluy a capacitor issue. But can empathize with those w.o. power but have the105 heat index.
Just what I don’t need to deal with. Right now I am at my wife’s bedside; she’s in hospice care (Alzheimer’s) & after many years she’s about at the end. Very mixed emotions.
@tinamarie1974 I agree! Or it could have happened while I am sleep.
If not & it was during the day. I would just go over to my Parents that have a whole house generator that kicks in when the power goes out!
Light candles, turn on my LED flashlight aimed at the ceiling and use my backup power bank from Meh.
If it’s winter, I run the stove with a box fan hooked up to said power bank in addition to the rest
Daaaannnncccceeee like only the cats are watching you.
(Whatcha gonna do. Night vision is standard)
Oh and refresh the app and or service checker every 5 minutes till they finally acknowledge there is an outage cause I’m not calling in to sit on hold to tell you what we both know.
My house loses power every time a squirrel farts. It can be a sunny day, and suddenly no power. 4 years ago we put in a whole house generator and 3 weeks later we had a 12 hour outage. It’s the best thing we could have done for this place.
@karlajoy We did the same. Whole house generator. Lights go out for about a minute or less then suddenly we have power again even if the neighbors don’t. Came in very handy earlier this year when we lost power for 36+ hours.
@kalma we bought a portable generator when we lost power for 4 days, had it back for 15 hours and then it was out for another 12. The basement flooded twice during that event. So glad those days are behind us!
Keep up with pest control around your unit. I had to make a service call this spring because ours threw an over voltage error and shut down. There was an ant infestation in there. Fortunately no damage but it was a terrible mess.
@karlajoy Thanks for that. We have an automatic gate opener that broke earlier this year because it was infested with ants because I still forget to protect outside electronics.
Sleep, do stuff on iPad, or if I’m in my RV just live as normal since it can run off 12V internal batteries for a while. (Except I don’t have a way to run A/C without power but I don’t usually travel like that in Summer).
Use my electronics until they each die in turn, phone, tablet, laptop, and kindle. So far the lights have always come back before my phone is drained. Alternatively I’ll go watch a movie on Netflix in the Tesla with the ac. Depends on how hot it gets in the house.
@milstarr Just got through a couple of days of 100° temps but I know that’s not as bad as some parts of the country. Luckily power stayed on. But since I got a Tesla last year, I realized for the first time that it could serve as an effective emergency A/C cabin for quite a while. Haven’t needed to do that yet. Not much room to sleep in a Model 3 though.
EDIT and then you can charge your phone and devices from the Tesla also! It’s like a big power bank that moves!
@pmarin I have a three also. We put down the seats and place a blow up mattress. Slept like a baby with the camping mode on. Yeah your feet are in the “trunk” but I sleep on my side with my legs bent so I’m ok. Not a lot of headroom but it beats sweating buckets in central FL. It’s not a bad cheap hotel room in your own yard.
Edit: yep it’s a big old rolling charger! I love it. Oh and it was 2 adult humans and 2 dogs roughing it in the 3. The dogs started out with us and ended up in the front seats!
Also, use a variety of 12V-18V-24V lights from various power tool battery systems: Milwaukee, DeWalt, Robinson, Greenworks. Some are big area lights or directable tower floodlights. (The main reason for having them is working in dark basements or areas where power is turned off for electrical work).
In my truck I usually have one or two smaller Milwaukee or DeWalt lights, for emergency roadside situations.
Plug my kettle into my Phase2 power bank so I can make some Ramen. But I’ll also need a few meh flashlight/cigarlighter chargers so I can see what I’m doing. Next, I guess i’ll take the batteries out of the freezer?
@caffeineguy I have a P2E, a Puleida, and a small Jackery. They’ve been cycling between usage for powering a thing temporarily where I don’t have an extension cord laid, and getting charged at the power strip dedicated to that task. This has been very useful.
I use bicycle lights to shine through the darkness.

@IndifferentDude things go “bump” in the night

@Cerridwyn Sounds like a good Plan!
Play with my phone, of course.
At the moment? I have a 5500 watt generator running to supply power for lighting and such.
@werehatrack How’d you & your neighbors come out of Beryl?
@phendrick Mostly ok. I lost a mulberry tree, there are some other trees down nearby, but not as many as there would have been if that derecho hadn’t torn holy hell out of the area in mid-May. Our electric service probably won’t be back on until Friday.

@phendrick I’m so sorry to hear about your wife. Alzheimers is a cruel disease. I understand the mixed emotions. I’m sending good thoughts your way.
Read Kindle books on my iPad. I always have power banks charged up and ready to go.
/showme what I do in the dark when the power is out
@mediocrebot I don’t think any of those are accurate…maybe top left minus the candle…“what the neighbors up to?”
@mediocrebot @medz
That guy on the bottom right and his hand/hands!!!
@medz I curse the darkness (and my lack of candles to light).
Depends on how late it is. Maybe just go to bed zzzzzzz

1000% recommend them to anyone.

@milstarr One of the topics much under discussion here has reportedly been “Where the f&^% is there a charging point with power?”

When the power is out, I watch TV.
It’s very satisfying watching a blank screen. Better than most of the stuff that is on when there is power.
@OnionSoup I love that show!
@macromeh @OnionSoup
Hey, the new kewl term for that is “raw dogging.”
https://meh.com/forum/topics/2-pack-home-zone-living-concrete-portable-table-top-fire-bowl-1#6683960f1bb8bcd6a695830b
@Kyeh @macromeh @OnionSoup The term appears to have been expanded to “other” uses pretty much instantly. (predictably. men)
@OnionSoup I find The Nothing Channel much less annoying and more restful than just about any of the others.
Listen to audiobooks and play on my phone. Next time I will have a portable generator (arriving Monday) and things will be somewhat normal.
Same thing we do most temperate nights. Go outside, kick back in our gravity chairs, feed the mosquitos and watch for satellites and UAPs.
If we’re having bad weather? I’ll keep checking my phone for outage information.
Plug my kettle into my Phase2 power bank so I can make some Ramen. But I’ll also need a few meh flashlight/cigarlighter chargers so I can see what I’m doing. Next, I guess i’ll take the batteries out of the freezer?
