when i was 21, moving myself was easy
when i was 31, moving myself was still pretty easy
by 61, I moved some stuff myself, movers for big stuff
Last couple times, movers baby
Lived in ME, VT, MA, NJ, FL, NY, PA, OH (moved to and from there a handful of times in various cities), IN, IL, MI, MN, ID, OK, MS, and besides the USA, in Scotland, England, the Netherlands, Cambodia, Canada, Germany, the Virgin Islands (USA and UK). I move enough I save my moving boxes and don’t put out a curb alert for them.
Overseas I only took what I could take on the airplane. Otherwise only twice did someone drive the moving van (work paid for most of it). I packed boxes myself, friends helped me pack the uhaul except the two mentioned above and once I hired off duty professional movers to pack the u-haul. I have likely at least one more move in my future to CA. And while in OH lived in 6 different residences (moving back into the same one several times, lived in 2 cities), ID in 2, IN in 2, PA in 2… and there are probably moves I have forgotten about. One of the professional movers was fighting with his wife who was on the truck with him so was throwing my boxes out of the truck to the ground. I know how to pack. Nothing broke. I want a teletransporter. And grass that stops growing after 3 inches and kills weeds.
@kittykat9180 For years I had outdoor adventure seasonal jobs and used those to work in other countries and around the USA to see different places before finally going back to school to change professions to one that paid more and I could be more stable. Also worked on tall ships and so lived on those in various cities too.
@Kidsandliz@OnionSoup I suspect that hiring @kidsandliz as a consultant on the subject of “Do I really have a reason to keep this?” might be even more effective.
I move a lot, my shortest move was to San Antonio for 3 weeks.
I sell (or give away) everything except my clothes and my car. It makes moving much easier.
The last time I moved (1999) was a 3-step process. My cousin and her husband helped me pack and move my stuff into a storage unit. I stayed with my parents for a few weeks while I repainted my townhouse and then moved everything I could carry myself in my little Honda Civic. For the furniture I couldn’t carry, I paid a couple guys from work a couple cases of beer to move it.
I may move into my parents’ old condo sometime this year. Now that I’m 60 and have a knee that’s bone on bone and needs replacing, I might hire movers. It’s a lot of money, but I don’t think I can do it myself any more. I’m not sure I even want to do it myself.
@OnionSoup I moved about that far using a VW Squareback for the majority of the crap, and borrowed a pickup for the single trip for the largest bits. The wife’s stuff required a mover; she had a piano. (She exed me in '98, and the piano was still here for years until she finally hired a mover to retrieve it. I had tuned it just before that, of course.)
@OnionSoup Exactly like my last move, only we just moved a mile and a half. What’s bad is that if you can just toss stuff into your cars you avoid having to get rid of things.
In the nearly 60 years since I turned 1, I’ve lived in six places: two houses with my parents, a flat in San Francisco, a condo in Davis, an apartment in Oslo, and a house in the Sierra Foothills that we moved to 24 years ago. Hopefully my next move will be to the crematorium. I don’t care what happens to all the junk I’ve accumulated.
The only time I have hired professional movers was when we bought my wife’s piano. All other moves (several over the years, all < 40 miles, the most recent in 1998) have been DIY (with some help from friends).
@chienfou@PooltoyWolf I am a firm believer, that the more you move, the less you accumulate. My first 10 years after leaving home and then the dorms, I moved (basically locally) to the first apartment, 6 months later to a different one down the street, 2 years later to a rental house, less than a year later to a different house and then 8 years later to the house i lived in 30 years. When I moved from there, a few miles away, I did the get rid of the junk and moved only my recliner, my library end table, and mattress and box springs as far as furniture was concerned and bought new. However, I had clothes, kitchen shit, books and more books and more books, LOL. It was cool. When 5 years later I had to move, it was awful.
@Cerridwyn@chienfou@PooltoyWolf The fact that my moves over the past few decades have each involved renting larger trucks and more helpers would seem to be at odds with that belief.
@Cerridwyn@chienfou@kuoh@PooltoyWolf Growing up, my family moved 9 times. I never stayed at the same school more than 1 year until jr. high. In college I moved 3 times. That third time was to my future husband’s house, and after living there for some time we moved to the house I’m in now. And I’ve stayed put ever since.

I like to move it move it.
I like to move it.
Set fire to the house and buy new with the insurance money… So I guess “Do it myself”@chienfou Do you have any good tips on getting the insurance company (and local authorities) to agree that it wasn’t an intentional fire?
Asking for a friend.
@xobzoo
Give me a couple of days and I’ll check with Guido.
I am not so old (or fat) that I need someone to move me, yet. My legs still work.
@hchavers
ISWYDT!
@hchavers Meh. Accessing movers isn’t a failure, regardless of your ability.
@brainmist @hchavers
I think he was referring to moving his physical self.
@hchavers I am moved often enough by things that don’t relocate me in space/time.
Creak
@katbyter BTDT.
If the company is paying, movers. Otherwise we did most ourselves except for the really heavy stuff.
Move like Jagger

@Kidsandliz, and I thought I move a lot.

@Kidsandliz so what you’re saying is. Next time any of us move, we should hire you.
@Kidsandliz @OnionSoup I suspect that hiring @kidsandliz as a consultant on the subject of “Do I really have a reason to keep this?” might be even more effective.

I moved Family across the Street from the Family Home, Easy to bring stuff over, & then be back for Dinner.

@Mehlachi He was a real wild thing back in the day.

We moved 10 miles last time. Moved most of the stuff myself. The heavy stuff got a van and some people to move.

@Kyeh @OnionSoup Oooooh, yeah. There are boxes upstairs that were packed in August of 1981, three apartments and one house ago.

I’ve never moved. Been in the same house for nearly 35 years.
@PooltoyWolf
We have too… after moving 11 times in our first 13 yrs together.
