So, something I never thought I would say, but I hurt my hip. I wish I could tell you it was in some crazy stunt I was doing, but I did it while sleeping. I have never dealt with hip issues before, any advice?
In what way is it hurt? That kind of sort of greatly affects the prognosis thereof and any suggestions we might have. Bruise? Popped out of place? General pain when moving? Standing? Sitting? Laying Down?
@jbartus Sorry, I should of explained a bit. It is my right hip, and it is a dull pain when sitting, and gets worse when moving. The pain radiates through my thigh, and down to my knee cap. What is so annoying is, I know if I went to the doctor he would just tell me to stretch and ice.
If you’re feeling it stretch from your hip to your knee it’s more likely nerve related. Go with jimmyd103’s advice and take an NSAID for the inflammation. Ibuprofen such as Advil or Motrin, or Naproxen (Aleve). Try not to sleep on that side which would put more pressure on it.
Old happens when you least expect it. It is not the years, it is the miles!
Do you sit a lot? My job is all about sitting – dr. told me when my sciatic nerve starting to act up – to get up and walk at least 4 times a hour. Also, all of the above suggestions too.
If this happened on your normal mattress, you may need a new mattress, possibly with more firmness.
Agree w @cinoclav, it sounds nerve related, if similar to what happened to me when I slept on a couch once. It turned out be better for me to use a camping mattress and sleep on the floor.
If that sounds like your pain, just plug “Sciatica” into Google. Under all the Doctor listings there will be a lot of web pages on it, various suggestions, and forum mentions of how people have handled it.
Get a new doctor, or at least a back specialist; once problems start, they can multiply. I’m about to toss an 8 year old pillowtop mattress and get a memory foam one. Probably this http://onpurple.com/, but I’m still shopping. I’ve had a memory foam mattress topper (about $100., from Sams), and it has made a world of difference. I have bad hips, back, you name it. You still need to stretch, and if you can take antiinflammatory meds, that might help.
I got old when the highlight of my day is staying up till midnight to log onto meh to see what they are selling. When I tell people I am excited waiting for my “fucko” to arrive and then tell them what that is, they know I am both old and crazy.
I got a different “hip pain.” it is “circular” around the top of my thigh. Almost like I am a maniquin (or android, wait, am I? … I’m sure there’s another thread for that discussion) and my leg could disconnect there. It doesn’t hurt when i sit or lie down, but when I go to stand it is a stabbing/shocking pain as I put weight on it. Again just in that “intersecting circle” where the leg joins the torso, it doesn’t radiate into my leg or torso. And within about 10 to 20 steps it actually subsides totally 90% of the time. What is that?!
@mollama Could be an irritation in the socket, similar to dysplasia in animals. While not the full blown thing, the symptoms sound like what I look for in my animals. If it keeps up, perhaps an xray to see if you have a bone spur developing on the “ball” part of the femur? Or if they can see inflamation in the “socket” part?
@zahita459 thanks for the thought. Unfortunately i have now read up on hip dysplasia, arterial claudication, stenosis, several arthritises, bursitis, and a few others, and i appear to be the polar opposite of people with hypochondria-- nothing appear to be even close. It’s only been a week and i promised myself back when it started, i’d see a Dr. if not gone (or going away) in 2 weeks. It’s gotten a little better, so we’ll see where i am in a week.
I had sciatic nerve problems bad enough where there was no position that I wasn’t in pain, no drugs helped, finally went to a chiropractor who fixed me right up. It took a few trips but the pain I’d had on and off for lots of years is no more.
Thanks for all of the advice everyone! I took some advil this morning, and am looking for a chiropractor that will hopefully be able to see me on Monday.
I had a similar thing happen, and finding a really good chiropractor made all the difference. Turns out it was my lower back out of alignment, and that caused one hip to be significantly higher than the other, which messed up muscles, nerves, etc. My chiro did Xrays first, before touching anything on me, and I told him up front I was NOT good with people touching me at all (never had a massage, not into hugs, etc.) and he was very good about telling me what he was going to do, then carefully doing it.
Possibly worth a try. Interview the chiropractors first, and if they don’t do Xrays, and you don’t like them, go to another one. I met with 3 before finding mine, and he works on a lot of athletes - high level martial artists, dancers, pro soccer players, etc.
A few nights of sleeping on the floor, alone, with nothing but blankets usually cures up my phantom muscle strains.
Don’t sleep drunk. Stay up 'till you are sober.
When did you get old? You get old the day you stop growing and start to die.
For most people, that’s around the age of 25. For most, the body’s growth stops at 18 and the brains growth continues until about 7 years after that.
For some, the long lived, their bodies do not stop growing until the late 20’s. This means their brains will stop growing at the age of 40 or so. When you start to die, you start to get these phantom injuries. That is when you got old.
If you aren’t long lived, cheer up. At least you got to experience the best of your sexuality while everyone else was young too.
@j0da you brain may physically stop growing, but life-long learning is important to long life. Im learning MS Access at age 48, and as much of a struggle as it has been (i know SAS but we dont have the budget, as Access is one-off so not starting from scratch, it’s still rough going), i feel good each new thing i can do.
@parodymandotcom What are you counting anniversaries of birthdays…? And as the anniversary of the birthday goes up the year goes down? Eg 50th anniversary of turning 29, the 52nd of turning 28…? Although you might have a problem when the year gets negative unless you die first. Or maybe you die when it is turns negative. In which case I’d suggest starting the anniversaries when you turn 60 or something. According to my mom you aren’t old until you are 104 anyway.
My last name is Young, so I’ll never be old. Anyway, getting old ain’t for sissies, 'fo true. My wife and I have vowed never to dress “old.”
Sounds like sciatica to me too. For me Chiro was no help, acupuncture, exercises…nada. After about a year or so, it just went away like some said it would. I still sorta have it, but it’s just a minor thang to deal with rather than a cripplement. (?)
One thing, opioids do nothing for it. Lyrica, which is for nerve pain, didn’t do anything either. Got a little relief from NSAIDS, but fleeting only. Thankfully I was able to sleep well, but getting outta bed was a bitch.

stretch and ice.
I can’t tell you when you got old, but I know I got old a month and a half ago.
So sorry you hurt your hipness. Many disparage hipsters, so perhaps it is not such a bad thing?
(Sorry, have no real advice, aging is a cruel mistress.)

Sorry about the hip. My advice is take Advil for a couple days to help reduce the inflammation and

@cranky1950 Also start eating your jello and taking the vitamin D complex stuff.

No advice here other than Advil and rest, but I know what you mean about getting old. I pulled a muscle in my neck a few weeks ago from sneezing.

Been happening since Sunday. And i liked what another lurker said about coming to Meh for the community and crowd-sourced advice. You guys rule.

Yes, I will ice and stretch this when I get home.

@conandlibrarian - Please let us know if this particular stretch helps, so we all know whether to try it.

I agree, sciatica. Sometimes just certain stretches will help. There’s so many different degrees of this.
Here’s my go to for pain from nerves, arthritis, carpal tunnel, etc

Getting old sucks, but it beats the only alternative.
Am I the only one around here who is getting younger?

@parodymandotcom Merlin or Benjamin Buttons?
If your thinking about it you’ve been old for a bit. For my lumbago it’s NSAID, heat and double down on the marinol.

This thread inspired a song parody, to the tune of “When Will I Be Loved?”. You can hear Linda Ronstadt’s version of “When Will I Be Loved?” at .
My hair’s graying
It’s dismaying
When did I get old?
I can’t see good
I can’t pee good
When did I get old?
When I was a youngster
I stood straight and tall
But now my bits are drooping down
It happens to us all
My hip’s aching
My hand’s shaking
When did I get old?
When I was a youngster
I drank beer all night
But now I have a glass of milk
And I’m in bed by nine
Ears are hairy
It’s so scary
When did I get old?
Why do I feel cold?
Tell me, when did I get old?
