@kittykat9180 I agree, i prefer a psychological element in the plot, deeper than just run-of-the-mill terror. Or, a comedic undertone, if it’s clever & not just a mediocre (sorry, Meh!) parody.
I love a good suspense/horror film like Rear Window, but I’ve never taken to the modern gross the audience out or jump scare variants. The first takes technique and artistry, while the latter are more throwing stuff in until you get to feature length. I can admire the work of the special effects artists and sound engineers and makeup artists and all the set dressing, but the editing and directing and most of the rest of the production is too often an afterthought to be all that interesting.
@jsfs So true. I really appreciate the ones that can combine them well, especially if there’s a meaningful or affecting subplot, such as in Pan’s Labyrinth.
Not into the gory/slash-the-teenagers genre.
Prefer those that build suspense through atmosphere.
Halloween season is a good time to re-view (in increasing order of recommendation, IMHO) Rosemary’s Baby The Shining The Exorcist Wait Until Dark
Midsommar.
@yakkoTDI No no no no no no no
@Kyeh @yakkoTDI Yeah no. Drop that one in the trench.
@Kyeh @werehatrack
@yakkoTDI You’ve got my vote, good creep/dread factor, but i thought Hereditary took that category to the end zone & spiked the damn ball!
I use to work for a theater. I can’t tell you how many times I walked in to do a check and saw the worse jump scare nightmare fuel.
@kjady Color me green with envy!
(Except I’d probably get fired for neglecting my duties &/or smuggling popcorn!)
I like scary movies but not gore for the sake of gore (like Saw).

They’re so damn boring. Only good for MST3K episodes.
@mythereal Even what I saw of the parody Scary Movie series fell flat. Meh.
@mythereal First thing I thought when I saw the poll. Irony FTW.
@mythereal @Wormwood @werehatrack
MST3K!!

I don’t need to watch a scary/ horror movie. Just watch the Cable news, especially FOX, OAN, NewsMax, CNN or MSNBC. If that don’t scare you…
Midnight Meat Train. One of Clive Barker’s best.
Dead Alive! Ridiculous and hilarious!
