I’ve had various types of dogs over the last 60 years. My personal preference is larger breeds. My all-time favorites were a Doberman and an Australian Shepherd mix. Both were intelligent, well-mannered and obedient. The mixed breed Shepherd, rescued from the pound, lived almost 50% longer than the purebred Doberman (15 vs. 11 years).
@macromeh Yay! Someone who likes real dogs! Too many of my neighbors have those little foo-foo dogs, and they don’t really train them…they’re barking all the time. Small dog complex.
@eeterrific@macromeh the small dog thing is because condo boards are under the highly mistaken impression that they are quieter and less destructive.
I live in a condo and have hence been reduced to small dogs. I love them enough to jump under a bus for them and they might even be more fun – but big dogs are easier to be around for sure!
If only our Cockapoo were less neurotic about noises so she wouldn’t bark all the time, I’d put her down as the best dog ever. She’s a loving dog who doesn’t demand attention constantly, but will sit with you if you want to pet her.
I guess it might be too much to ask for her to not accept the spoils of the enormous cocker spaniel we also have, who consistently counter surfs and knocks food on the floor all the time. He’s lovable, but a real asshole
@guyfromhawthorn I’ve had several cockapoos. I love them! (though rat terriers are my favorite). Some are smarter than others, but all are loving and loyal… and terribly cute!
@caramelarrow woohoo for the black mouth cur (though that one may also have some Boxer going on from the looks of it). Our Roux is a rescue BMC and she’s great. Right now she’s lying next to me, snoring not unlike an adult male human.
I have 4 dogs and my favorite one is from a animal shelter. He’s so smart and loving. I highly recommend saving a dogs life and go to a dog rescue the can match you with the right dog. Dont go to pet stores. They are from puppy mills.
@Kyser_Soze Sorry for your loss. I lost my dog/best friend in January. It feels almost like losing a kid. We spent many hours hiking around the woods together. This is a picture from the day we brought her home from the pound, almost 15 years ago.
@narfcake My cat was sleeping, but when I played that his head jerked up and he stared at the window. He’s still staring out into the dark right now.
(That’s the kind of “dog” I’d want!)
Cockapoo or Rat Terrier.
Ratties are my favorite. Very smart, very loyal, good watchdogs. Very lap oriented and they adore you!
Cockapoos aren’t always the smartest, but they’re loyal and loving and cuddly. Furry and cute!
@Tadlem43 We we’re adopted by a Rat Terrier for the majority of my childhood. What a terrific dog! We got her at 4 years old and she lived to be 19. I swear she knew basic English (like at the sentence level) and could identify family members by name. My mom will never have another dog because she was so attached to her.
BUT: OMG the shedding! She was black and white so it didn’t matter what color furniture or clothes were, there was always evidence. The shedding is actually the reason we were able to adopt her; it was a huge problem for her first family apparently. She had never had people food before we got her, but of course my sister and I ruined her quickly. She became a shameless beggar in short order.
I miss her. If we add another doggo to the family, I think I’ll have to make an effort to find another. I’m sure they don’t stay up for adoption long, though.
@djslack They are incredibly smart!
I had one that my neighbor found and gave to me. i didn’t really want her, but I kept her. She turned out to be my heart!
I lost her 8 years ago and still miss her like it was yesterday.
She didn’t shed a lot, but then, I’ve got 2 cats and they DO shed so maybe I just didn’t notice.
Yes, I have 2 dogs now that I’ve ‘acquired’, a lab/shepherd mix and a cheweenie (more chew thank weenie), but my next dog will be a rattie. I love them so!
I know no one else will agree, but I love St. Bernards. I have owned 5 over the years and they are the best. They are very loving, but will defend the house. Lots of dog to hug and they make great pillows when on the floor watching TV. They love long hikes up hill and down dale (as long as there are streams to drink from). The only caveat is to have washable paint on your walls because they tend to shake their heads after drinking water and the spittle kind of spreads. I loved all of them.

The best kind of dog is the dog who owns you.

The one that you rescue, but who really rescues you.

@lonocat
Giphy: cat fetch
The best kind of dog is someone else’s.
Love dogs. Love my dogs. Would never have dogs again.

The one that stays away from me and behaves itself.
@katbyter This guy is very well behaved. He has a job
@katbyter Why he’s one of the top ranked among the “business dog” image search results
@katbyter
Yes! I’m not a dog person bc I’m allergic and anytime I walk into a house with a dog their all over me.
Balloon Dogs are the best. They don’t require food, water or vet care and they are very devoted to their owners.
@heartny See my reply with image down below.
@PooltoyWolf
I thought this was your answer as soon as I saw that picture!
@Lynnerizer Hahaha! I prefer mine to be a bit more durable than balloons
Hot.
In my case, someone else’s. I have neither the time nor the spoons to deal with a dog.
My daughter bought a dog that adopted me. So I walked him and we were inseparable for 14 years. He just passed away on Valentine’s Day.
@Kyser_Soze I’m sorry.
(It’s been nearly 6 years since my doggie crossed the rainbow bridge. She’s still missed here.)
@Kyser_Soze Condolences. They always leave us way too soon!

Whichever kind that happens to be in my lap.

A cat. (hides)
I’ve had at least two dogs my entire life and I’m pretty old.
Best I ever had was an oversized pit bull my vet found on a Bronx subway. Miss him more than my late spouse!
(I would have continued adopting pits if I still had a house, but condos have max weight rules.)
Currently have one dog that’s half cairn and another who is a wire fox terrier. I also had a Chihuahua at one point. The rest were mutts.
Love my current dogs tons but smallish terriers are a handful and ill-advised if you gave a spouse/family member who is on the fence about dogs.
Come to think of it that Chihuahua was a bit of a beast as well.
Really you have to match the dog’s temperament to that of a particular household.
A reputable rescue agency keeps the dogs for at least a couple months and can advise you on your best match.
If you can avoid it, don’t prize cuteness above other qualities when you adopt
The “right” dog, no matter how objectively ugly, becomes incomparably cute once you bring her home and fall in love.
Good luck finding her!
Inflatable ones, but I’m biased.
Golden Retrievers! I don’t understand how anybody could want a different breed!
@jnicholson0619 Having owned them for over three decades, I agree!
