What's notably fucked up in the latest version of iOS, so far?
3Of course I installed it, when I know to wait. And ignore what i know.
Of course I’m out of space. Deleting a few pix and audiobooks fixed that.
But …
Copy/paste.
Works intermittently. Doesn’t work a lot.
Grrrr.
Swipe kb functionality notably less accurate than that of Gboard. But perhaps I just need to get used to it.

Why won’t you apple people give it up and upgrade your iCrap to android and just be done with the misery?!?
@shahnm That would be worse than starting an Xbox vs Playstation argument here… but here goes.
you just don’t get it. Once you are surrounded by a network of Apple-authorized devices, they place a “field” around you where things that were not magical before are suddenly magical. All other devices just seem to, relatively, “suck” in comparison. Note that you will be billed monthly and/or with each major purchase from Apple but you will not mind. You will be happy. You can put it on your Apple Platinum card (mine arrived yesterday). yes, it is platinum; no, it’s better than that, it’s gold-pressed latinum. It is useless to resist.
@shahnm
Because we have our reasons, and we are not all totally stupid.
And I use Android. Daily.
And for most common use I like(d) iOS better. Until today. Now … We’ll see.
And it is possible that iOS devices feed less personal info out to Google and everyone else than Android devices do, tho this is uncertain.
Hadn’t you better go check on your batteries?
@pmarin @shahnm Nah I have a whole stable of Apple stuff, 2 pretty current laptops, a couple iPads running 12.whatever, iPod. They are boring as all get out. If you want to extrapolate that so are the people that use them regularly. The I have a 15" Pro and a 13" Air both special order decked to the max. Never really been used. I figure I will give them to the next serious girlfriend the Macbooks sure make a dandy piece of jewelry. I will say you can’t get in trouble with them. In fact you really can’t do very much fun stuff with them. I guess that’s the real draw. You look like you have a computer but you really don’t.
@Dog19026 Never much used macbooks? You wouldn’t be interested in selling one of the cheap? I have a macbook (6+ year old) with an expensive catastrophe going on.
@shahnm spoken like a true green texter.
Go ruin a group chat somewhere else, like YOUR PHONE
@shahnm That’s like saying I should move to Russia to… sorry, too political.
Uhhh, that’s like saying I should join Scientology to get away from my Christianity? I’m not sure what the analogy I have in mind is, but I’ll run with that.
@shahnm Misery is reserved for the 0% of users still using a Windows Phone.
@Dog19026 @pmarin @shahnm So you’re saying your next girlfriend is going to be boring?
@mehbee @pmarin @shahnm It usually ends up that way.What can I say? More than one person who knows me well describes me as a Renaissance Man. Not my words. I am who I am and it’s too late to change that.
@Dog19026 How do you feel about dating women with kids?
/asking for a friend
//CC @mehbee @pmarin @shahnm @Kidsandliz
@Dog19026 @mehbee @pmarin @shahnm Hey @therealjrn - you trying to pay match maker? @CaptAmehrican is looking… Just sayin’
@Kidsandliz @mehbee @pmarin @shahnm @therealjrn Me? I have no problem with that. Tends to add another dimension to a relationship. You have to add the biological dad into the equation. As long as he’s not a psycho it’s all good.
In Canada they have the Dark-face Mode.
Ouch… Too Soon? Apologies to P.M. Trudeau.
It seemed funny at the time. (that’s what He said!).
@pmarin But how much do you love someone saying “Yea, I did it. It was wrong. I didn’t understand why it was wrong at the time, but now I do, so I’m sorry for my actions”? You’d never hear that in America. Never ever. It would be “I’m sorry people were offended by actions,” not an admission of guilt and understanding why their actions were wrong. Overall, it made me love Trudeau even more because he admitted to what he did, explained why it was wrong, and apologized.
@Gypsigirl213 @pmarin
People within my family and extended family, and within my circle of long term friends and acquaintances, say that sort of thing frequently.
And mean it.
And they often account for the conduct in a way that tends to make one think the problem, whatever it was, will not recur.
Of course, none of them are politicians.
/giphy politician
@Gypsigirl213 @pmarin I’m a bit more cynical than that. Not full on schadenfreude like Canadians who don’t like him, but that’s pretty much what he has to say if he wants to take a stab at remaining popular – that’s just competence.
I don’t think a grown man should be in a position of apologizing for wearing a stupid costume as a teenager, regardless of which party and country he’s from, in the first place – he’s meaningfully a different person living in a different time, which people ought to be able to keep track of, even through their bloodthirstiness, and it’s absurdly low stakes.
@InnocuousFarmer I hate the culture-of-blame crap the world is going through. People learn from their mistakes.
That said, Trudeau was 29 years old when the first photo was taken.
But back then, I don’t think (white) people would have seen this as racist.
Personally, I am more concerned with him chocking the woman.
@G1 Ah, whoops. My mistake, but it was still some 17-18ish years ago then… Distant enough to deserve some real caution in judging. As a kid, I knew a man who dressed up for Halloween in blackface. I am certain he thought he was demonstrating a progressive appreciation of a fictional character, and had no idea that historical precedents had ever existed.
Hadn’t heard about Trudeau… ??? interacting with a woman. I agree that’s at least potentially more concerning, but I’d tend to want to not worry about it, as someone without a hope of ever knowing what really happened (part of that being that even the first-hand memories are old now). Plus I’m American, so, ehhhh… we’ve got more clear cut issues with some of our representatives.
@G1 @InnocuousFarmer Even in the early 2000s black face was racist. It has always been racist. It will always be racist. It’s racist roots go back hundreds of years. The thing is, many didn’t know it’s racist, such as Trudeau, who are white and/or privileged. They don’t understand the deep connotations that offend people of color when they wear black face. The excuse “it wasn’t racist back then” is a false assumption, it’s more accurate to say “many didn’t understand that black face is racist because it was pre-social media/internet times and information was limited.” The Trudeau of today knows it was wrong through the lens of today because information is much more accessible-so the only thing he can do with the realization that what he did was wrong-is to apologize. An apology like he gave would never happen in the US, as it was sincere and acknowledged the wrongness of his actions.
@f00l @pmarin Why aren’t politicians allowed the same opportunity to learn from their mistakes? They are human beings. Human beings make mistakes. When they do, all they can do is learn why what they did was wrong and apologize.
@InnocuousFarmer
“Hadn’t heard about Trudeau… ??? interacting with a woman.”
Sorry, I meant the existing Arabian Knights pic. His hand location.
I put a there…
@Gypsigirl213 Hmm… I still think there’s a distinction between a white person dressing up as a black person and knowing the history and cultural implications, and a white person doing the same thing without that knowledge. We shouldn’t call the second thing “racist”, because people will do that with entirely admirable intentions, and because it is only offensive because of its connection to history. Forgiving people cultural ignorance ought to be painless.
@G1 Hahah, I thought “chocking” must be some slang for something. Saw an old semi-#metoo article, thought maybe it was that.
@InnocuousFarmer Careful. Black face is racist whether the wearer knows it or not. Just because you don’t know what the speed limit is, you’ll still get a ticket for speeding. If you break a law in another country because you don’t know it exists, you’ll still get punished for the crime. Ignorance does not make the action any less racist-it is a racist act. The offense has been committed as it is an offensive action-whether you intended it to be or not.
@Gypsigirl213 I’d like to keep going, but this is probably getting too nuanced for text in a forum. Shall we say we probably agree, give or take, and leave it at that?
@InnocuousFarmer Agreed and I thank you for a friendly debate!!
@Gypsigirl213 @InnocuousFarmer don’t y’all realize you are on the internet?!?! This kind of thing doesn’t happen here!
@djslack
I’m not happy about them replacing 3D Touch with Haptic Touch
@Ignorant
Please explain the difference thanks
@f00l 3D Touch was a pressure sensitive feature (on supported phones) that allowed for “Peek” and “Pop” press lightly on a link or email and it’ll peek into it to give you a preview, press harder and it would pop open that page.
Now with Haptic Touch all phones have it and it’s now just a long press equivalent of a right mouse click on a PC. Still nice, but a loss of features for 3D Touch equipped phones.
@Ignorant
But what is “haptic touch”?
Help please, for those of us who pay little attention to smartphone jargon and marketing terminology.
@Ignorant
Also I think the feature you mention maybe messes up my looking at who gave my comments stars on Meh, and possibly messes up other such self-absorbed internet conduct of mine?
Now if I press on a star, so as to see who starred it, an un-useful menu pops up.
When I dismiss the menu, I can see who starred the comment. So that still works. Sort of.
@f00l Haptic Touch is a long press equivalent of a right mouse click on a PC.
If you long press on a link it’ll preview it and give you a menu option to go to the page, or app icon you will now get a menu with more options, like selfie mode on the camera app, private tab on Safari, etc.
@f00l I don’t think it’s Haptic Touch causing the issue of seeing who starred.
I think that is the new highlighting/selecting text feature…it’s now easier to select text by pausing on text then swiping to highlight it but I feel that’s now causing issues with stuff we’d normally long press for.
@Ignorant 3D Touch is a living glimpse of Paradise and Long Pressing is outlawed by the Geneva Conventions.
Have you noticed it missing in the keyboard cursor feature? What about context menus on icons in Springboard?
@Ignorant
D’uh, wut?
I hate these changes.
Where can I go to get an intro to all this hateful crap?
@InnocuousFarmer 3D Touch is gone everywhere in iOS 13, but keyboard cursor is basically the same. Icons is crap now it’s like a combo of what 3D Touch was but mixed with rearranging icons, everything is now an extra click or two from what 3D Touch was.
@f00l @Ignorant I don’t use iOS 13 yet, but this looks complete: https://www.imore.com/how-use-text-editing-gestures-iphone-ios-13
@Ignorant @InnocuousFarmer
Much thx. Still struggling.
/giphy sigh
Ok, they changed up how you do copy/paste?
Or so I read. And I don’t know what the new method is. But I’ve seen it described as “tricky” to accomplish.
That’s just interface-dumb, and incredibly abusive to the users.
Right now I’m po’ed about it. Very.
/giphy steaming
@f00l do a 3 finger tap to pull up the copy/paste menu at the top.
@f00l I saw a video about it someplace. I think it’s supposed to be better but less intuitive. Like, you pinch with two fingers and thumb, like you’re picking up and placing down text. Maybe that was only iPads…
I bet Apple introduces that in that Tips app they’re always suggesting. I am going to wait for 13.1, myself
@f00l @InnocuousFarmer Actually I hated the old way and half the time I couldn’t get what I wanted (I wanted this, not that). I know that was just my own lack of knowledge of the tricks. But if there is a newer “trick” I’m all for something that maybe works better for me (once I learn it.) Plus apparently now we can use a mouse on iPads! (but iOS 13 not out for pads yet, just phones this week, more roll-out later I think is what I heard)
FYI, you can update without having to delete things. Plug your device into your computer and iTunes will offer to update it for you.
@lljk
Already completed.
So far I wish I hadn’t upgraded.
From what I have heard, you should be able to pair your PS4 or Xbox controllers with your phone now, in order to play videogames!
Eyes on the prize.
@InnocuousFarmer
I don’t play me no games.
I read me some books.
@f00l @InnocuousFarmer
But never about your IOS?
@InnocuousFarmer @therealjrn
Nope.
Read v few “recent-released-device-help tech books”. V few are “how-to” or “tips and tricks” books.
I suppose I just like the stuff I’m actually reading better. Self-indulgence. Of course.
Conclusion:
I’m an idiot who is slow to attack or deal with problems immediately relevant to my life;
and I learn stuff by accident, and by trying to “fail forward”.

I feel the need of another Gilbert and Sullivan Pinafore song.

Did you know that @carl669 is the keeper of the count?
But hey, what about that Dark Mode huh? Quite the innovation yes?
@therealjrn
Revolutionary!
I turned it off. When everything else works properly I’ll turn it back on and see if I like.
Also installing the upgrade logged me out of audible. Grrrr.
PITA as I needed to delete a few books in order to not get space warnings. And audible app was cranky. It seems better now.
How is it that I’ve noticed zero differences on my iPhone 8+ since the latest update? I hardly ever notice difference after updates unless it’s a big, new feature—like when stickers came out.
@Gypsigirl213
Dunno. Often I am aware of few changes. Depends on the release version.
Have you got IOS 13 yet?
Tried dark mode?
Tried to copy/paste?
I think most will notice those changes.
@f00l Yes. I updated already and haven’t noticed a change with copy and paste. How do I use dark mode? I’ll try it if I know how to use it.
re. the thread title: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2019/09/ios-13-ships-with-known-lockscreen-bypass-flaw-that-exposes-contacts/
@InnocuousFarmer
Oh now you just made my day wonderful! Thanks so much!
I guess I’ll have to remove from existence any human other than myself who touches my devices.
Until a fix is out.
Apple, damn you! Am I to become a serial killer because of you?

My iPhone 6 Plus isn’t supported, so I guess I’ll be missing out on all the fun. We’ll see how I fare on the iPadOS front on Tuesday. I’m assuming my iPad Pro 12.9 will be supported, but I’m unable to locate a reliable source which defines exactly which generations/sizes of iPad Pro are included.
@ruouttaurmind this is from 9to5 MAC
Meanwhile, as for the new iPadOS 13 release, Apple says that these iPads are supported:
@Ignorant That list appears on many Apple “expert” sites. But there are three generations of iPad Pro 12.9. Without specifying which iPad Pro 12.9, it’s unclear if I should extrapolate this to mean all generations? I guess I’ll find out on Monday!
@ruouttaurmind the Apple site doesn’t list a specific generation for the pro 12.9 so it should be for all of them.
https://www.apple.com/ipados/
I managed to copy/paste a few times. Accidentally, of course. Not sure what I did.
I think the “deal” is to tap the word on order to select it. Not deep-press
Sigh.
