@DrunkCat Read Sister Carrie by Theodore Drieser in Adv Lit class in HS. Pretty profound stuff for innocent, impressionable minds from the suburbs of Chicago

@carl669 My favorite college class was Bowling. I got credit for going bowling with my friends (who signed up for the same class). Two semesters - Bowling 1 and Bowling 2. How great is that?
@carl669 College electives can be easy, but they’re meant to expand a student’s horizons / possibilities: Bowling, Music Appreciation, Concert Band, Volleyball, etc. Several of my friends (engineering undergrads) took Horticulture: Intro to Floral Design
@carl669 Good to know. Meanwhile, I have to have a chat with youngest daughter who seems to always be doing this when I ask her to unload the dishwasher.
@vanslaterco Life’s too short for pre-shredded cheese. I shudder every time some asks me to shred or cube there cheese for them at work. “Would you like me to chew it for you, too?” (Is what I’d like to say if I didn’t want/need my job so much).
Here are some of my favorite classes from my time at the University of Minnesota - Duluth:
Geol 1120. Life and Death of the Dinosaurs. (3 cr; A-F only. LE 5)
Survey of dinosaurs, who dominated large-animal life on Earth for 150 million years; theories of dinosaur origins and extinction; habitat of dinosaurs on worldwide Mesozoic coastal plains; dinosaur fossilization and modern excavation.
PE 1530. Rock Climbing. (1 cr. PE)
History, techniques and safety, equipment, knots, basic belay systems, route finding, face and crack climbing, identification of environmental hazards.
Mu 1003. Beethoven to the Beatles. (3 cr. LE 9)
Survey of 19th- and 20th-century classical, jazz, rock, pop, and ethnic music genres.
Mu 1005. Jazz Studies. (3 cr. LECD 9)
Evolution of jazz; social problems in America that fostered its origin and continues to shape its development.
Th 1051. Introduction to Film. (3 cr; A-F only. LE 9)
History and genres of film; how movies are made. Watching and analyzing films and developing an articulate and discerning viewpoint. (2 hrs lect, 2.5 hrs lab)
And yes, the lab for Intro to Film was watching movies.
my daughter’s undergrad, instead of your usual general ed, they did things like you had to have so many speaking intensive classes (all oral reports) writing intensive, etc. They did these somewhat along traditional grounds but focused not just on content (where appropriate) but on writing and speaking skills. Allowed students to take classes that would hold their interest.
Oh, this was 20 years ago

I prefer this one at Ithaca College.

@pitamuffin actually knew someone who went on a bowling scholarship to college - full ride
How about surviving Zombie Apocalypse at Michigan State University?

What? You get 3 credits for it.
"We all hope we would be the person who would not leave anyone behind, but we really don’t know.
In times of catastrophes some people find their humanity, while others lose theirs."
I actually want to take this course!
So, this ISN’T a new Yoga For Kids position?
@LaVikinga the newsletter claims they were teaching the kids to “stretch” before exercising.
i’m on to them!
@carl669 Good to know. Meanwhile, I have to have a chat with youngest daughter who seems to always be doing this when I ask her to unload the dishwasher.
He is still adorable!!!
I’m teaching my kid that pre-shredded cheese is a moral travesty.
I mean, he’s only five months old so he hasn’t even eaten cheese yet. But, still.

@vanslaterco - so you are saying, make America grate again?
@vanslaterco so say we all.
I used to have an education once. I wonder where I put in? I always forgot to put a bluetooth tag on it, so I keep mislaying it.
