On a reading kick lately, and with our book shirts over at Mediocritee, figured why not start this conversation? So, if you don’t mind and would like to participate, I’d love to know the following:
-What are you reading right now?
-Any books you’re looking forward to starting for 2023?
-Favorite banned book
Mine:
The Invisibile Life of Addie LaRue
Mistbourn from Brandon Sanderson & The Thing in the Snow by our very own, Sean Adams.

Invisible Life of Addie LaRue was great.
Jasper Fforde’s entire Thursday Next series is also good stuff if you like books about books.
@ExtraMedium I’m loving the take on it so far, can’t wait to get more in-depth with it.
I’ll add those to my TBR.
Ancillary Justice - Ann Leckie.
Just finished: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet - Becky Chambers
My backlog, err, library, is so big I’m not too worried about new books.
@blaineg
Me too
Been reading light weight junque lately
did read a very silly zombie noir
Pearl by Josh Malerman. It’s seriously messed up. I’m enjoying it so far.
End Games by L E Modesitt Jr is the current, almost done book. It is good but last in a 12 book series. I have been working through them for some time.
Last book outside the Imager Portfolio was Fairy Tale by Stephen King.
Stayed up way too late and finished it. Will see what I am in the mood for later to start next. Some interesting possibilities here.
Just finished the Gwendy’s Button Box and Gwendy’s Magic Feather. I am on the list for Gwendy’s Final Task at the library.
Started Sycamore Row by John Grisham.
Reading is a nice escape from the things I should be doing right now.
Currently enjoying Split Second by David Baldacci while waiting for my two new shirts to arrive. Up next was Paddle Your Own Canoe: One Man’s Fundamentals for Delicious Living by Nick Offerman but I think it was just bumped by The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab.
If only I had a place like this to enjoy them.
@callow I need that life sized book nook
The man who Died Twice by Richard Osman. It’s fun. Also All About Me! By Mel Brooks. Also fun.
Our Malady by Timothy Snyder.
Also trying to find my stack of back logged books but my house is currently in the early stages of Spring Cleaning** so that may take a while and the stack might grow.
**West Central Florida is pretty much done with that Winter stuff.
I contain multitudes : the microbes within us and a grander view of life by Yong, Ed. – active (the microbiome within us and within which we live. We live in a sea of cooties. Get over it.)
The peppermint tea chronicles : a 44 Scotland Street novel by McCall Smith, Alexander – active (the on-going adventures of 7-yr old Bertie, in an novel in which little happens and there is less drama than watching paint dry. Typical McCall Smith Scotland Street novel.)
The song of the cell : an exploration of medicine and the new human by Mukherjee, Siddhartha. – active (good over view of the history of cells by a hematologist/oncologist, but not a deep exploration of how cellular mechanisms work, so far)
Adrift : America in 100 charts by Galloway, Scott, read (fascinating view of modern life expressed as charts and graphs)
Starry messenger : cosmic perspectives on civilization
by Tyson, Neil deGrasse. read (on my to read shelf. I’m not expecting much, but Tyson is usually entertaining.)
Transformer : the deep chemistry of life and death
by Lane, Nick read (could be life changing if you are interested in what is unique about the Kreb’s cycle and how life may have originated on Earth. The #1 book I read in 2022.)
Reading - A Sellsword’s Wrath, book 2 of the series The Seven Virtues by Jacob Peppers
Looking forward to: the other 3 cosmere books by Brandon Sanderson this year.
Banned: No idea though Animal Farm is a good one.
Reddit.
Junque. But easy and fun.
@f00l No audiobooks? They count.
@f00l And of course, Meh.
@sammydog01
I’ve been addicted to “YouTube nutcase channels” lately.
Brain on vacay. Supposedly.
My computer screen.
Just finished Random by Penn Jillette…currently reading I Exaggerate by Kevin Nealon…a bunch of celebrity caricatures he did on his iPad each with a page or two of descriptions…fun, light read.
The Short Timers by Gustav Hasford.
the book Full Metal Jacket was based on. I hadn’t had a copy in physical form for almost 25 years until last Friday when a dear friend walked in with a wrapped surprise for me. She said that she tried to find for me a 1st edition… of course that’s not going to happen. Hell, I wonder how much she paid for the movie tie-in edition paperback?
I am reading IN COLD BLOOD by Truman Capote. It’s an oldie but a goodie. I usually like true crime. I love Stephen King & a romantic novelist Danielle Steel. Just finished THE BONE COLLECTOR & am going to read entire series. I took a speed reading course in Jr h.s. & can zip thru many books very quickly. Love Dean Koontz. I belong to Kindle Unlimited so lots of books there too! Also I found a good website called READ ANY BOOK .COM . You Do Not have to join to read Most books!
@Redbird1325
In Cold Blood is what can occur when lit gets ahold of real-life horror. Good book.
Supposedly the experience fucked up Truman’s psych state for life.
Incidentally, Harper Lee went along for the ride. She was along for many of his trips to the crime locus and for research, and supposedly discussed much of the writing and crime-aftermath with him.
Mailer’s Executioner’s Song is a similar book in this mini-genre that’s a damned fine read.
Reading is for people who can’t afford immersive VR experiences.
@medz Reading is for people who don’t need a bunch of gadgets to have immersive VR experiences.
