@hchavers the only meat left when I went tonight was 2 skirt steaks@$12/# (one vac seal broken), and a bunch of ham hocks…pass. At least they are (finally) turning their stock over. Not particularly known for that…
Where are opening cans and boxes in the choices? Not everything has to come from refrigerated or frozen. E.g.: I’ll pass on frozen pasta. Much rather cook up a box of pasta, with tomato pieces, sauce, paste, maybe some mushroom pieces, out of cans. But I don’t consider that as cooking “from scratch”.
@phendrick That’s cooking from scratch. You take ingredients and put them together. Maybe the pasta itself isnt from “scratch”, but the meal as a whole is.
As long as the groceries are open, I’ll cook fresh. Yesterday, of course, it was corned beef and cabbage. Day before was eggplant parm. Tonight will be fresh fish, depending on what they have.
In the last 4 days I’ve made (from scratch) Sheppard’s Pie, Roast Beef & Yorkshire Pudding, Beef & Guinness Stew and I have a recipe for Detroit Style Pizza on deck. Make the most of this quarantine!
Got a 10lb bag of onions for $6 at Sam’s.
Sliced them up and made a Dutch oven full of French onion soup. Going to walk some over to the neighbors (elderly, they don’t get out much anyway) tomorrow.
@therealjrn I was there for something else (for SWMBO) that Costco doesn’t carry. They were the same price for 5lbs at the grocery store.
On a separate note, popped into a new Aldi in my town and was very surprised in a good way. Got some of those Aldi brats someone here mentioned (above?). Also about half the price of Johnsonville s at the local grocery chain. And some speck. Hadn’t seen that since I was in Austria years ago.
Very nice store and well stocked. Definitely will be back for more savings, since I picked up a GC using my 5% CB Discover (Grocery category until April). The produce looked good and they had all the basics in good supply.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t cook food in ordinary dishes. I need the dishes to be of a special quality and shape. I’m a chef retired, and I cook at home. I don’t have a favorite dish, because I cook everything at the highest level. But only if there are special dishes. That is, if I pickle meat, I do it in a special bowl, I can’t pickle meat on a normal plate. My daughter knows about this, and she gave me professional cooking utensils for my birthday. Although she believes that it does not matter in what dishes the cook prepares, it will still be delicious if he is a professional. I believe that every little thing is important in cooking. Here is compare https://www.cookwarestuffs.com/best-mortar-and-pestle/ and tell me who’s right, me or my.
Mostly from scratch but throwing in delivery for shits and giggles. (Mostly shits.)
@awk Did you get enough TP? I have a friend who can hook you up.
@hchavers I have a closet full of Meh shirts and a working sink.

@bleedmichigan +1 but I’m shivering with the cold than being cool with moves.
What is this “cooking” you speak of?
@heartny I’m wondering if frying eggs counts as cooking.
@iluvmingos In my world it does
@heartny @iluvmingos In my world pouring drinks counts as cooking… I’m quite the chef…!
@heartny @iluvmingos you applied heat and made something generally seen as unedible and made it edible. It is cooking in its purest form.
@heartny I like the way you cook!
The only thing left in my local grocery requires preparation and cooking. Everyone may be panicking, but they are still lazy.

@hchavers well, went back and bought a package on the ham hocks. Split pea soup on deck!
@hchavers @ybmuG
Ham hocks are for greens - Collard and Mustard.
@hchavers @mike808 true, but good luck finding any. I’m sure they’ll be great in the soup.
A few days cooking, then a day or two of carry-out. Repeat.

@phendrick yeah I think what they actually meant was preparing something from ingredients vs pre-prepared meals.

@Al_Coholic copy that
@zinimusprime How about if I were to put a Big Mac together with a bag of fries?

@earl_danger I’ve got some brick cheese in the fridge with “Detroit style pizza” written all over it.
@earl_danger @jitc “fogetaboutit”
I think pressure cooked corned beef and roasted cabbage & potatoes tonight. Last night was soup made with broth and freezer ravioli.

Bacon Quarter pounder with unsweet tea.
Last night was my favorite recipe for steak au poivre
