Rope lights BEHIND the crown molding? Fresh paint AND a pressed tin ceiling? RIP OUT the damn carpet and paint the concrete floor. Where to start, where to start... Cleaning?! Ha! Not likely.
My mom is very... I'll say "frugal." And Dad was not home much. So growing up, I did a ton of DIY work, especially on things most people would never touch, worst being electrical (Our house had spent 30 years under a crappy DIY nut who would just tape a new wire off anywhere close by going to where he wanted. I brought it all up to code and somehow didn't lose any fingers. Ah middle school). The one thing that seems most rewarding to do my self? Replacing the innards on a constantly draining toilet. The moment when it fills up and then... Silence. It truly is golden.
I've torn out all the carpet in three places on a whim on a weeknight.
@MsELizardBeth did same, found there were hardwood floors underneath
@mehod Lucky. When I ripped the carpet out, I found damaged plywood instead.
The good news was it was in the middle and relatively easy to replace.
@narfcake I found 30 years of dirt, I didn't replace the carpet, I went with wood floors after that... geeze carpets are nasty.
@thismyusername Oh yeah, there was that too!
@mehod me too, all 3 times. Mine had paint on it though.
Pressed tin ceiling.
Cleaning.
Meh. After three or four years, the dust doesn't get any thicker.
Anything that I pay someone else to do.
I've learned it's cheaper to pay someone to do something than to pay someone to clean up my mess after I've tried to do it.
