@communist
I’m will miss seeing T J Miller on the show. I hope they can setup some guest appearances with him so that we can get a little more of the New Age Silicon Valley blowhard character.
I still miss Welch from season 1. He was astonishing in the role.
@f00l it sounds like once he’s gone, he’s gone and right now he’s pretty firm about it. (even dismissing the idea of an appearance in the series finale.)
i love the show but i don’t feel great about them getting rid of (what i view as) the main character. i’ll give it a chance though - it will be interesting for sure. (or not interesting at all and i’ll chuck it off my watch list.)
it read to me like he was considering it and then when he got the script he felt like it would be a really perfect ending for the character as written, so he should do it then to do his best by the character, if that makes sense. and that returning in some fashion after a perfect ending would cheapen that in some way.
@f00l idiocracy was a movie by judge from 2006, actually. (shit, i didn’t realize it had been that long!)
it’s a big satirical commentary about The State of Things set in the future where earth is populated by stupid people, largely based on the idea that the poor and uneducated are the people having kids and those with good qualities to pass on are deciding not to have children or waiting too long, only having one kid, etc.
they don’t have water - for crops or people - everyone drinks brawndo (a sports drink), the favorite tv show is “ow my balls”, everyone is super lazy, they can barely speak english, etc. i just can’t stand watching people act like idiots for that long. it’s grating and unfunny to me. i know it’s the entire point of the movie but it’s like…if these things are already terrible and annoying in real life, why do i want to watch a movie about it intensified 100-fold? i’d have loved it if it were like a meme or a short youtube video. but a whole movie…i can’t stomach it. tons of people love it though, so ymmv.
@jerk_nugget I only like the first 15 minutes of the movie. The explanation of the dumbification of humanity and of how a pimps love is very different from a “square”.
i chose the “#1 fan option” because there wasn’t an option for simply “yes, i like it, and make a point to watch it.”
i really enjoy it. gillfoyle is the best. however, it’s still so terrible that one of the best characters passed away IRL and then they tried to bring in a carbon copy (except female). she’s good, but unfortunately no one can compare.
She’s good (imho). And I find her to be a bit alike, not a carbon copy. And that would be kinda commonplace enough in the IRL SV hothouse. But she’s not an “inspired creation”.
The prob is, the original, as written and acted, wasn’t just good; that character was artistic genius.
Perfect perfect perfect.
I don’t think the scriptwriters gave the “replacement” anything like the same level of inspiration.
This may poss have to do w the writers’ feelings of loss. Perhaps, they almost don’t “want” the replacement character to be as good, as an original character, as a way of honoring Welch.
@f00l yeah, no, i totally agree - he was just perfect on every level. so getting anyone to fill his shoes in that role…it’s never going to be as good, it’s basically impossible imho. so you end up with a kind of watered down and less inspired version.
i kind of wonder what it would be like if they had let her (or anyone else) create their own vision of the character. i mean, i don’t really know what went on behind closed doors of course, but it reads to me a bit like they showed her his episodes and said “yeah, we want you to be kind of like that.”
but again, i really do like her, i don’t feel like it’s a bad performance at all, just that she’s in a tough spot because she could never be what he was to that role.
What you will see is every brilliant loser, and brilliant asshole, and brilliant pompous idiot, and brilliant nincompoop, and brilliant but overchallenged type you’ve ever known. And then some.
If you’re kinda modeled among the various show character archetypes, so much the better.
@InnocuousFarmer
You hate them so much that you can’t find a beautifully done send-up funny?
Ok then.
But I thought you said you didn’t watch, because you didn’t want to see a parody, or non-parody, of yourself.
I think you underestimate the force of my hatred for certain kinds of characters.
I do not watch that show for fear that I will see myself represented. That’d be no way to live.
Please tell me that you don’t seriously hate yourself.
(as could be read from one interpretation of the juxtaposed statements above. I hope that’s not what you intended to convey, anyway.)
(For starters, although possessing knowledge of the lack of usability of self-hatred does not allow every person afflicted with self-hatred to simply turn emotions, habits, or attitudes off, hating oneself is incredibly inefficient and counterproductive.)
[Talking about it from a geekish perspective, if you will forgive me for being so incredibly shallow for a min.]
I wouldn’t say that I hate myself. I mean… not entirely. I have redeeming qualities. At least uh, a couple? Eh. I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Que sera.
Wait…
You pay money to watch TV?
@2many2no
You have no friends who pay $ to watch TV?
@f00l Sure, but they don’t charge me to come over.
Plus, they have OPB.
@2many2no
That’s the point. I let TV addicts pay, most of the time. Cause I turn the thing on 2-4 times a year at most, during most years.
This past year has been … uh … “interesting”, newswise. So I’m paying for the moment.
heres all you need to know about silicon valley in one 3 min video

@jerk_nugget
What’s the story behind his choosing to leave (not the “right moment for my character” story)?
Do you happen to know?
@f00l here is a good article:

but of course, only time will tell!
mike judge gets it.
@thismyusername that he does. although i would rather stare at a wall for two hours and ~space out~ than watch idiocracy.
@jerk_nugget
Is idiocracy another Judge series? I am so out of it TV.

It sounds like a good 15 min joke played out for way way too long.
I watch such dramatic video as I consume, while always multitasking. But I don’t think I could stick with that one for long either.
