@FightingMongoos I had a Weird Al cassette parked (not inserted) in my old Grand Am when it was wrecked (for the record, not my fault) and it snapped in and started to play after about a second of silence. Surreal, but funny.
I stopped riding a bike the same time everyone else did... When I got my drivers license and no longer had to hold my mother's hand when I crossed the street.
Being a cyclist and runner, I hate when I see people with headphones on while doing their thing in the road. I don't care nearly as much when people do it on a wide trail or sidewalk. It's the principle of how much awareness that is lost by removing your hearing. I don't want to hit you because you decided to juke in front of me all of the sudden and you couldn't hear me behind you.
That being said, I hate people that blast their music on a speaker more.
@patthetuck We had a fatality here a few years back. This guy was out walking and listening to NPR with headphones. He got hit by a train. Yes, a train that was blowing its whistle. That's why I walk around a track if I want to listen to books on tape.
@sammydog01 People getting hit by trains because they have headphones on is actually a pretty common occurrence, believe it or not. It happened just last week to a teenager in Slidell, LA (just outside of New Orleans)
I am guilty of wearing headphones when I walk (on a dedicated trail) but never wear them when I ride a bike, regardless of where that might be. It seems crazy dangerous to ride a bike with headphones on, but I am seeing more and more people doing it; car drivers also (both are illegal where I live)
While on my bike recently, I saw a policeman stop a motorist who was wearing headphones, and I was a little fearful that I was about to see a national incident because the guy was screaming at the top of his lungs that the cop had "made up" the whole headphones being illegal idea. To his credit, the policeman calmly let him rant and swear away before giving him his citation and wishing him a good day.
For some reason I usually listen to Weird Al when I go for a ride.

Environmental sensory deprevation of any type whilst riding a bike on a street = permanently self-correcting scenario. Natural selection.
Always podcasts, but with only one earbud in. The road-side ear (left) is always open to hear traffic and such.
Wear earbuds and perhaps die, use a bluetooth speaker and annoy people. Try listening a home and unplug for a while?
The faint sound of a child's voice describing some random thing that they saw coming from the Burley.
I listen directly from my phone with a mount
it's dangerous and often illegal to ride with headphones in, you miscreants!
