@yakkoTDI Saliva has a lot of good enzymes. Art conservators sometimes use spit to clean paintings. So, you’re on to something, though I’m concerned about the large quantities of saliva you’d need to clean an average load.
I’ve gotten more scientific intentional about my laundry the past few years (blame the pandemic and/or youtube cleaning videos). At the moment I use the unscented Kirkland liquid from Costco, sometimes with enhancements depending on what I’m cleaning. I use Downy Rinse and Refresh to add scent in the rinse if I want it.
It is weird to me to have scents in the detergent, shouldn’t it get washed out? What’s it made of??
@awk I don’t know what the fragrance is made out of, but I’ve had to handle it at work. We just called the base ingredient “musk”. At full strength it’s ludicrously powerful. I once splashed a couple of small drops of it onto my pants while pouring it, then the next time I did laundry it made the entire house smell strongly of laundry detergent for over a week.
@awk@brennyn Cascade makes a product that is supposed to clean out your dishwasher and remove residues, but the only time that I tried it, it put such a god-awful stench of perfume in there that I had to run six kinds of chemistry through it to get it down to the point where it wasn’t leaving that residue on the dishes. And they’re not exactly porous. I have become very leery of claims of wonderfulness from laundry and dishwashing products at this point.
I use Tide Free and Gentle. I thought it was free, but they made me pay for it. I also use wool dryer balls. I was surprised to learn that dryers had balls. Who knew?
When he was new-born, our son had much trouble with allergies. His skin would break out with rash and occasionally boils from almost anything. Besides affecting his diet considerably, we also had to attend to his clothing and even laundry detergents. My wife went with All Free and Clear and that seemed to help on that front.
We even had to avoid usual dairy products for him. Only milk he could drink without breaking out was canned goats milk. (I’ve always maintained that’s where he got his hard head from.)
He’s now in his mid twenties and mostly over skin allergies. (He’s flown the nest now, so on his own – I don’t know what he uses for laundry.)
About the only things I’m allergic to are pollen and taxes (especially property assessments), but still use All, mostly from habit I guess.
I use Puracy. It’s ultra concentrated, so you only need a little, cleans well, and it’s from a family owned business.
I order directly from their website (I cut out the middleman whenever I can).
Currently I use laundry tablets from Blueland. Their products tend to be eco friendly and are unscented. They work great for me, although I have no children making crazy messes with their clothes.
Perfumes give me problems, so we buy fragrance-free stuff. Sometimes the Kirkland flavor, sometimes All, occasionally Tide, depending on what’s on sale with the lowest per-ounce cost. And we habitually use about half as much as the label calls for.
@OnionSoup I was trying to get that scene in the Julian Sands Warlock movie where he’s drinking that kid’s fat after he sacrificed him, but no such luck…
@OnionSoup It doesn’t work unless you make your ash by burning leaves and sticks that were collected under a new moon and lit with a candle made from the fat of the same goat.
All of the proprieties must be observed.
Or you could just nick down to the store and buy some like the rest of us.
@werehatrack really? Ever since K mart closed down, I can’t find detergent made from ritually sacrificed goats anywhere. My local doesn’t sell it and the shop owner gave me a weird look.
I used to use method unscented in the one where you push the thing on the top like a soap dispenser having a senior moment. More often unscented or one of the mild. But I tend to go with Seventh Generation or method or one of the other ones that are not from the big companies or are chemically Laden but not always. I bought something at Traders when I had a front loader I had to use. It was a concentrate designed for front loaders and I hated it
For colors/most loads: Dirty Labs Free and Clear.
For whites, Ecos Free and Clear (which I find to work better with hot water and Oxyclean free and clear on the sani cycle.)
For delicates, Dirty Labs hand wash detergent.
When traveling, target brand free and clear detergent pods (“vacation” means I don’t have to pour detergent lol)
I just lick my clothes until they are clean.

@sicc574 So do you prefer corn or peanuts?

I can’t find anything better than Tide. Roll Tide!
@hchavers Same! Everything else turns my stomach.
@hchavers can’t stand tide. I don’t even like the smell of the unscented and it’s outrageously priced
whatever is unscented

Usually 7th generation if it’s on sale. It’s kroger brand counterpart if not
@ironcheftoni That’s what I am using now - 7th Gen Free and Clear, because I don’t want anything scented.
We like the various Gain scents.
Original Gain. Stick with the proven.

I use arm and hammer (not the baking soda) lol. Tide and others that have lots if ingredients in them cause rashes on me.

No one here rendering the fat from goats they slaughter on full moon nights to make their own detergent?
Me neither.

I like Persil.
I also like weird stuff for sale.

Grew up with ALL, and used it for years. Then All had Lavender scent, but switched to Gain Lavender once All discontinued their Lavender one.
Son & DiL use Tide Downey scent. Meh!

Washing machine sheets. Earth Breeze brand.
