@hammi99 any of the above, in the right circumstances. I have some nice headphones (and speakers), but I work in sound. They’re definitely worth it for me, and I recommend doing more than the absolute minimum if you can afford it because you will hear new details in the audio you already listen to, but plenty of people won’t benefit from getting the really fancy ones (for that matter, I probably wouldn’t). If you spend a lot of time on the computer in a chair, a good chair to do it in is probably a good investment to help with posture and avoid a lot of problems later. But if you’re struggling to pay rent, none of that matters much. There’s a lot of things where getting a tier or two upgrade is pretty worthwhile (see the Vimes Boots Theory of Economics) if you can afford it.
An electric lawnmower. Have had mine for about five years, and I really love not having to worry about gas, oil, sparkplugs, etc. Just keep the battery charged and go.
@januarymick excellent call. We got one of those ride on Greenworks mowers. Love it… Chews through batteries when mowing (usually have to stop half way through to recharge). … But when the blades aren’t spinning battery lasts forever.
I’ve probably spent more time using it to haul sand or gravel up the driveway/moving supplies than I have mowing my lawn.
@januarymick I went with Ego 8 years ago and it was the best money ever spent on a mower. Now have the trimmer, edger, blower, snow shovel and snow blower… probably missing one or two items.
@januarymick@katbyter I have a corded mower I was using for a season or two. I believe it is from the 1960s and is a beast! Crazy loud and the cord is a pain. Blade hasn’t needed sharpened since I found the thing.
@januarymick@katbyter@OnionSoup Totally agree! I cut for a couple older women and they never know that I am cutting their lawns plus the Ego mowers have headlights… during the heatwave last week I took it out around 10pm for a test run and my neighbor next-door had no idea I had been out there.
@werehatrack
Three weeks in March isn’t that bad either. Although I missed the feijoa season. My aunt made ice cream with some frozen ones, and I’m tempted to go back just to try them.
@Crapnotneeded Oh, yes. Feijoa cider is one of the things that I wish I could get here. The tree can be cultivated where I live, and I will very likely plant one soon.
@pmarin@werehatrack
Don’t forget the ice cream. These little roadside stands that take vanilla ice cream and mix in fresh fruit quite fabulous.
How ice cream tasted in my childhood…not all this airy stuff. Just not the same. When ice cream melts, I want to drink it, not marvel at the way it maintains its shape due to the things (albeit “natural”) they put into it. Ahem. [Steps down from Soap box.]
@Crapnotneeded@werehatrack I’ve got three little Feijoas planted at my house this past year. Too small to fruit. One day though.
You’ll do better with more than one. They fruit better with a non genetically identical partner. Also sounds like will need to pollinate by hand as birds are.main pollinators trying to eat flowers and they dont know to in the US.
@Crapnotneeded@OnionSoup@pmarin@werehatrack I once spent 8 weeks in New Zealand (January + February). That was a great trip. It helped that my older sister lived in one of the nicer small resort towns (Mt. Maunganui, North Island), so we could use her place (which was a 2 block walk to the beach) as a base of operations as we explored the various sights (including a road/ferry trip around the South Island).
@Crapnotneeded@OnionSoup@pmarin@werehatrack And BTW, at the time my BIL owned/operated a (somewhat famous) ice cream shop, so I got to enjoy as much delicious NZ premium ice cream as I wanted while there. They even made the waffle cones in the shop, using an antique iron.
Unfortunately he retired and sold the shop some years ago and, from what I gather from the reviews, the current owners are not great.
Your second battery refrigerator.
All of the above
@hammi99 I agree & more, especially Shoes!

@jenniferhebden I have the heater set for 71. 65 is cold where I’m from.

@januarymick Mine has a cord, and it’s a huge pain

@januarymick @katbyter Mine also has a cord but I don’t mind. I did kill a cord (and blew a fuse) once, but I’ll never do that again.

@fjp999 @januarymick @katbyter the battery powered ones these days are so quiet… and the torque puts the gas ones to shame.

I was going to make a comment about my wife <<CapnJB has left the chat>>
@capnjb
no need to run off, the second part of that equation is totally the key.
@chienfou Fair enough
Kids. Hopefully they’ll take care of you someday.
@katbyter that’s a scary thought.
I’ve seen how well they take care of the pets.
@katbyter @OnionSoup Kids are definitely a huge investment… And a huge gamble because the payoff is so far down my life.
@OnionSoup
/giphy That’s a good point
Oh. Life.
A great hospital (I’ve just been to two friends’ oncology units; one is clearly more expensive than the other)
A two-week vacation in New Zealand in December.
I doubt that I’ll get another one.

@Crapnotneeded @werehatrack I had never heard of it, but now I have a new reason to go to New Zealand. (Always wanted to anyway).

@Crapnotneeded @OnionSoup @werehatrack So I need some plants and some specially-trained birds? This is getting complicated…

Good ice cream and good chocolate.
@Kidsandliz Emphasis on the Good in both cases.
