How about using your phone’s camera flash as a flashlight? Anybody remember when that wasn’t a thing but you could download an app that made your screen white and it would kind of glow a little bit? Yeah the flash was right there all along.
@heartny I’ve never seen those oversized carabiners. I find that you can load up your wrist and forearm, and still have your hand free to open the door. This works for me, as my other arm and hand are used for the cane that I have to use.
@jouest@Kidsandliz Actually Gold Pigeon needs to pay me a commission.
Hey, it would be COOL if Meh could get ahold of a batch of those shoes! They have a lot of different styles …
@jouest@Kidsandliz@Kyeh Or colors so ugly that even the head shops couldn’t peddle them. Of course, if they showed up here, it would be more likely to be a batch that was equipped with certain features that would only become apparent here in the forum.
The can opener wasn’t invented until something like 70 years after the can. People had to use things like bayonets to open the cans, which probably would have led to a lot of ER visits if there had been ERs back then.
I mean, we consider it free from the tap, yet somebody figured out how to get us to pay money for it.
(Don’t hate on me. I know that some tap water is disgusting, some is unsafe, and some is unavailable when you’re traveling. Also, not all bottled water is junk. It’s just the basic idea of charging money for “free” stuff sounds like a scam, which might also fit the thread.)
Not just when you are traveling. Try living where I do. We had 8 days of no water starting about 1pm on Christmas Eve through New Year’s Day two years ago this Christmas. And many other weeks of no water or boil water notices. While it has been better recently with respect to at least having water and fewer boil water notices, I get tired of having to take all the filters off the end of the spigots to get the rusty looking crap out of them when the water goes back on or when the low water pressure goes back to normal.

I still use my powered on phone screen as a flashlight when I need a lil light but don’t want to wake someone up
Mommy Hooks. When you have a gazillion bags to carry but only want to make one trip from the car.

@heartny note from experience: you can put too much weight on one of these and turn your stroller into a trebuchet
@heartny @jouest Don’t tell you kid you did that when they were little. You will never hear the end of it when they are a teen.
@heartny @jouest @Kidsandliz One person’s bug is another person’s feature.
@heartny @Kidsandliz I did and they won’t
velcro
Post-it Notes
@heartny Post it notes “glue” was “discovered” by accident as the stickum those use were a failed experiment trying to do something else.
@heartny @Kidsandliz the “discovered by accident” shit is the BEST
@heartny @jouest @Kidsandliz
Read about the discovery of microwaves and their re-purposing as a kitchen tool then:

Not sure it’s used as much today, but Liquid Paper correction fluid. Invented by Mike Nesmith’s mom, Bette.
@heartny classic Bette
@heartny I think it’s now mostly called “White Out” and used on the “Forged in Fire” show in making Damascus steel:
These clever sandals with the magnetic snap closure, my favorite summer shoes.
@Kyeh you have cost me money this day
@jouest Ooo, you got some?
@jouest You need to pay @Kyeh a commission.
@jouest @Kidsandliz Actually Gold Pigeon needs to pay me a commission.
Hey, it would be COOL if Meh could get ahold of a batch of those shoes! They have a lot of different styles …
@jouest @Kyeh You know if they did sell them they’d only be the extreme sizes or something that would mean they’d fit few.
@jouest @Kidsandliz @Kyeh Or colors so ugly that even the head shops couldn’t peddle them. Of course, if they showed up here, it would be more likely to be a batch that was equipped with certain features that would only become apparent here in the forum.
/showme sandals with special features only available from Meh
@werehatrack I bet those would sell.
@Kyeh @werehatrack I’d bite…
Suitcases with wheels

@lisagd I’m buying a can bayonet now, though.
@jouest @lisagd 70 years of people with one eye or 9 fingers saying “Why didn’t I think of that?”
@lisagd Relevant explanation of the long lag between the invention of the can and the can opener:
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/why-can-opener-wasnt-invented-until-almost-50-years-after-can-180964590/
Looks like the hammer and chisel was the preferred method. I doubt a bayonet would work.
@lisagd In a similar vein- matches and match books- which were invented long after cigarette lighters…

@xobzoo the other day I had to pay 75 cents for air
