what are your top 5 favorite musical artists?
2Ok we all know it's impossible to pick JUST 5 so here are some stipulations to help narrow them down.
- They have to be an artist whose music you can listen to at anytime in any mood
- You have to listen and like the majority of their catalog. Not just that one hit song.
Ok so here are my five:
- Within Temptation
- Hanson
- Metallica
- Eminem
- In this moment

Pink Martini
Alecia Beth Moore (the bitch speaks truth)
Arturo Sandoval
Silly Wizard
Whatever is on KFJC
@SIMBM - Is that the station that did the Louie Louie marathons about 25 years ago?
@KDemo That it is. But it was in 1983, which is over 30 years ago. Played 823 versions of the song, including versions that were recorded during the marathon. Richard Berry was invited and showed up, and Jack Ely, the Kingsman vocalist, made a surprise visit. Jack had never met Richard before, and they ended up doing a 45 minute jam of "Louie, Louie" live.
@SIMBM - Oh man, now I've given away my age. I think the marathon went for at least 3 days. Some of the versions were really funny (crab louie louie), but most were just painfully bad.
@KDemo Lasted more than 63 hours. Not quite three days.
@SIMBM I love me some P!nk
@SIMBM I've played music with the former cellist from Pink Martini
@SIMBM KFJC is where I first heard Homo Truck Drivin' Man by the Pajama Slave Dancers.
@SIMBM @Brooklyn11218 I love purple.
Jimmy Buffett
Little Feat
ELO
CCR
Coldplay
Am I the only one that noticed the OP listed both Hanson and Metallica?
No?
Okay!
@capguncowboy I don't discriminate against good music.
@Brooklyn11218 you hate it all?
@capguncowboy I noticed, but after trying to comprehend it, I figured it was better to not provoke that sort of crazy and move quickly on.
@capguncowboy they're hair bands, it makes sense
Hard to pick just five. I'll probably be in the minority here with some of these. In no particular order:
@jsh139 Wow good call on static-x! Haven't even thought of that band in a long long time.
@Trailmix Unfortunately there probably won't be any more from them since Wayne Static passed away last month :(
@jsh139 Aw damn. They came to a small venue where I live a couple years ago and I didn't go for some reason. I now regret that decision. RIP
There are many more and it is almost painful to just pick 5.
A "fuck me Friday" thread on a Wednesday, I'll play along.
Depeche Mode
Morrissey/The Smiths
Iron & Wine
Radiohead
Madonna (she's no Hanson, but I like her :) )
This list is fairly fluid except for #1
@SSteve I will be tormented for days thinking about others that could have wound up on this list. Elliot Smith, The New Pornographers, and Brian Eno immediately come to mind.
Close runners up: New Order (& spinoff bands), Saint Etienne, Erasure
@Starblind I love the Beach Boys. My favorite song of theirs is Kokomo.
@Starblind I love purple.
It always changes, but right now:
- Ana Tijoux
- Binary Star
- The Sword
- Red Fang
- Tricot
@The_Baron I love purple.
Hm...
Jack White (and anything he's in other than the Raconteurs)
Muse
Gorillaz (and other Albarn projects)
Radiohead (+Thom Yorke)
Metric
I love purple.
Leon Redbone
Joe Cocker
Jim Croce
Wagner
John Philip Souza
..... now let me get back to doing my monthly speaker dock inventory.
Doobie Brothers
Eagles
Michael McDonald
Rod Stewart
Kenny Loggins
just going by what's gotten the most playtime in my car(s) since i've had Mp3 capabilities:
Ben Folds
Barenaked Ladies
Childish Gambino
Weird Al Yankovic
Garfunkel and Oates
and lately, not a certain band, but a certain album - Guardians of The Galaxy, Awesome Mix Vol. 1
@earlyre Awesome Mix has been getting TONS of play on my end too. Best soundtrack ever.
I am going to answer twice because I may have had some drinks... (or I can't list just 5 or I've had 5 drinks)
Yup, I'm drunk... Overshare!
LMK when there's a Top 25 :) love and thanks for sharing all
Foo Fighters
Green Day
New Found Glory
Jimmy Eat World
Third Eye Blind
@TheAlmighty1 I love purple.
Not in order:
Eric Clapton (anything, ever)
Dire Straits
Eagles
The Black Keys
Disturbed
As mentioned just 5 is crazy hard, so here are my current top one in rotation.
1. Five Finger Death Punch
2. Halestorm
3. Pop Evil
4. Seether
5. Breaking Benjamin
@Nikodemus I saw Five Finger Death Punch when they were just really getting started. They played with Disturbed at the House of Blues in SC, they were actually a bit heavier then than the last album .
@RedHot would have loved to seem them in concert when they were out here but couldn't swing it. And yeah Disturbed would be on the list too if only there were more space
@Nikodemus Great list. I think you'd love Volbeat, if you're not into them already.
@DJP519 Good call, saw them in concert a couple months ago
In no particular order:
Skinny Puppy
KMFDM
Aphex Twin
Front 242
Tobacco
@molfsontan KMFDM SUCKS!
Their music is sampled, totally fake
It's done by machines, 'coz they don't make mistakes.
@Ignorant Kill mother fucking Depeche Mode
Easy:
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Counting Crows
Boston
Toadies
Tool
I'm more of a song-by-song fan than a catalogue fan. I almost exclusively buy singles. But using those criteria, what comes to mind are:
Kansas
Styx
Credence Clearwater Revival
Ladysmith Black Mombazo
Jace Everett
I do like a lot of contemporary music, but I haven't listened to any of them enough to say I like their whole catalogue.
Very difficult to narrow this down to five...
1. The Beatles
2. Squeeze
3. Mumford and Sons
4. The Avett Brothers
5. The Beach Boys
