I read a story a while ago that a woman called the cops by ordering pizza. And I thought, what about an app that looks like a Google/Uber eats ordering system that grabs all your local restuarants menu to view to avoid suspicion and essentially when you order it’s calling the police? I had toyed with the idea of putting instructions in the menu items i.e. a pizza order of 1 large pepperoni pizza with anchovies input would stand for “Sig Other at home, drunk and potentially armed” or “SO is armed and has kids locked in their room.” the idea is that it would text the info to the local police the complete situation so when the cops arrive they have some idea of what is going on.
@Targaryen While I like the idea, there is a lot that would go into this, like a really lot. I’m not even sure if there’s a good place to source the local businesses with menus, without having somebody maintain it. Some company somewhere might have an API.
From the FCC site: Remember that in most cases you cannot reach 911 by sending a text message. I would guess the same would go towards the local police station. 911 has to send a bounce back if they don’t support it so you aren’t expecting help when none is coming, which could tip somebody off, and make the situation a lot worse.
I also wonder what happens when the service fails to work for a user, and they try to sue.
@Thumperchick I’ve worked a few high-end fancy-schmancy joints but mostly diners. I’ve never been to chef’s school or anything. But I watch Chopped all the time. I actually prefer to work the front of the house.
That’s tough…I think I’m too humble to call myself an “expert” at anything because there is always room to improve or learn more. I’m pretty good at a bunch of things like being a dad, console gaming, misc tech stuff, driving, fixing things, and bedroom stuff involving feet/toes.

@Thumperchick Probably fixing stuff. Analyze the issue then determine a feasible solution and implement it. This could be anything from a toilet running to a software application or report that could perform better. Improvising with resources available is key. I get great satisfaction when I achieve what I set out to do.
Lately, I’m in a battle of wits with my dog who is determined to find a way to the basement when the pet door is only meant for the cats to get through. I’ve reinforced the pet door with some metal strips and some more bolts and screws. I was watching her via camera this morning and she tried and failed to get through. I won this round, it would seem. I’ll examine the door tonight to see if any parts failed and improve on the design. I’m worried about the carpet though as it looked like she was trying to dig under the door at one point… Might have to put one of those plastic desk chair mats down…
@Thumperchick Yes. The door is just her latest fascination. She figured out she could squeeze through the cat door. “Hey I got in!” After I made it smaller. “Hey, I can’t get in now… Challenge accepted!”
I suppose I’m good at creative stuff, I never think it’s quite as good as it should be, but I can pull some cool things off from time to time. And I’m pretty damn adept at figuring out how to fix things.

I think I am most proud of the brain hat and the dolls I made for @mfladd.

Here’s a pro-tip. When you’re singing your ABCs, when you get to “Z” don’t sing the part about “Now I know my ABCs…”. Instead, just start over again at “A”.

At Fort Riley, we had payday formations every month that (all too) often included immunizations for … whatever it was they wanted us to be immunized against. Hepatitis, various forms of plague, annual flu, dysentery. We all just lined up and got them, and mostly just wondered why we needed to be immunized against things like black plague - then immediately decided that it was probably better not to know. I was first in line one day, for a reason I can’t remember, to get two shots for … something or other. So, of course, as I exited the building, everyone wanted to know what shots we were getting that day. I waited until I got to the corner of the building. Just before I rounded the corner, I paused and said in my best command voice: “Oh, the shots. Rabies and distemper.” There was talking for another couple of seconds, then a very satisfying pause for almost another two seconds.
My favorite is from Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings when Bilbo Baggins is making his farewell speech: “I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.”
Now, there was a true expert in the art.

I wouldn’t claim the title of expert, but I am really good at sculpting, board gaming, travel planning, and dog training. In my working days I was really good at leading meetings, conducting trainings, problem resolution, and written communication.

These days I seem to be best at making the goofy birthday cards we send to our clients. They look professionally designed (as opposed to looking professional, because they’re way too weird for that) and I suspect most of our clients think we pay someone to design them.
I do take some shortcuts — I mostly buy stock imagery these days instead of doing my own photography. But that frees me up to spend more time on the graphic design/editing that puts my recognizable stamp on the end product.
Also, the writing can reach Meh levels of weirdness when I’m at my best. I’m very proud of that, though I have to wonder sometimes what our clients make of them…

Typing. My record for WPM is 117 on my Das Keyboard 4 Ultimate with Cherry MX switches. On phones I can average about 50-60.
This topic depresses me. I’ve said it before and I really mean it, I haven’t discovered yet what I’m good at and I feel like I’m running out of time.

@Barney Sometimes what we’re good at is hard to define. It could be compassion, or a general sense of right and wrong. Or some other intangible thing.
You do tend to inspire kindness in others - which is a definite talent all on its own.
