As a vehicle for scoring half-priced chocolates on the 15th, it is eminently useful. Unfortunately, the majority of those leftover chocolates are in the form of second, third, and fourth rate assortments in those idiotic low density heart-shaped boxes. I want the bulk packs, with everything dark chocolate covered, and all fruit centers. Somehow, they never have that. Not even before the bloody day. The closest I can get is the Terry’s chocolate oranges.
I don’t much care for the forced hearts-and-candy, must make it special commercialization, but I don’t mind a day where maybe there’s a little sweetness. Or cheesiness. Never forget,
My funnest VDs have involved moonlighting at a local haunt. They let me have the entry-crowd elevated catwalk, which is a choice location (and also not one people have been putting their own personal touches on) and I portrayed Cupid’s demonic counterpart. Sure, I can give you ‘love’ for a day. But for a teensy, weensy price, I can upgrade you to something that really lasts!

@brainmist@xobzoo I thought the same thing about “funnest VDs” (?!) until I realized VD also can mean Valentine’s Day! ‘VD’ was the term I learned in my public school education back in the progressive 70’s. But I haven’t heard that term in years, seems to be replaced by the more general ‘STD’ now.
Hubby and I used to use it as an excuse to buy each other a bunch of presents, but then we realized we can (and do!) do that anytime, so now we just go out to dinner.

Hopeless romantic checking in here, so I’m all about Valentine’s Day. When my wife & I chose our wedding date, August 14th, we realized that our half-anniversary would be Valentine’s Day, so it’s kind of a double-celebration day…even after 24 1/2 years (25th anniversary upcoming…if she doesn’t get smart that is…)
If it wasn’t such a problem getting a restaurant reservation, we’d do that. So I usually just prepare a special meal for her. (Helps that I grew up in a restaurant.)
@olperfesser Relationships generally run a lot smoother when both people can cook. (In our case, we both do, but we have exact opposite approaches. He does recipes to the letter. I look at what we’ve got and ad-lib something to do with it.)
Anniversary of me proposing to my wife is Feb 2nd. Her birthday is Feb5th… we have another tradtion I won’t go into here because it’s a long story for Feb13th… we’re celebrationed out by Feb 14th. Not that we don’t celebrate V-Day, but its not one of our more important days. We celebrate things like anniversary of first date, and a bunch of other silly, specific-to-us dates and I’ll randomly bring her flowers… but V-day not really important.
@OnionSoup Last year, I decided to start celebrating the day that my name change order came through from the state court. That’s September 22nd. I’ve never had a day of my own that I could reliably celebrate, because my birthday is 4 days before Christmas, and that makes it pretty much impossible to do anything. It doesn’t help that my parents were not big on parties of any kind to begin with, with the result that I only ever had an actual birthday party once when I was a kid. This year is going to be somewhat novel in that respect. I’m not entirely sure how to approach it. This is literally uncharted territory for me. What the hell do I do?
Historically, no big deal for me… I was Fully Single, and Feb.14 just happens to be my Best Friend’s Birthday… so that’s what I did… celebrate his B-Day.
last Year, I got a GF for the First time in 20 years…
tried to schedule a mid-week “weekend away” ( no weekends off in retail) that just happened to fall on Valentines… (seriously, when i booked things, going just far enough out that we could request time off, just happened to fall on 2/14…)
so for Valentines day last year, me and my new GF went away for a couple days, and ya know… did new couple out of town stuff… walk around a different mall and look at stuff, watch a movie or 2 on the hotel cable, eat at restaurants we don’t have here…
and probably a couple other things we hadn’t done together before

Valentine’s Day means I treat my wife to especially good/large chocolates and flowers, not just the flowers I get her the rest of the year.

Mostly materialistic crap, but a good way in a relationship to see how it could go.
