Update everything on all platforms and processors again, peeps. : (

Kernel-memory-leaking Intel processor design flaw forces Linux, Windows redesign
Major security flaw found in Intel processor
And not just Intel.
Just update. Sigh.

@thismyusername I too, read the reddit
@thismyusername Intel CPU’s are more susceptible than AMD’s. Update, update, update!
Especially if you run Linux, update the kernel. or find if the kernel has been updated though the package manager in the last month.(Confirm in the forums)
Ever since the Alpha processor was discontinued by Intel lap-dogs at HP/Compaq, I knew this would be coming. This was just a fortuitous discovery and revelation of one of probably many .gov backdoors in the dominant CPU architecture.
I’m switching back to my Apple ][+
@duodec
No kidding. More of these are coming.
They went way faster than they thought thru. Of course. It’s tech.
“Why ship a thoroughly reliable and effective prodict? It’s just faster and cheaper to keep sending out new fancier versions with brand new flaws. Fix one thing, break the next.”
I might have a trash 80 stashed somewhere.
But that’s Intel isn’t it? Is it so old it’s in the clear?
@f00l I think the -80 referred to the Zilog Z80 processor, so you should be good to go. Though I suppose that was made to be compatible with the Intel 8080…
@f00l it’s the Zilog Z-80. Should be good to go, but even if not you’ve probably got one hell of an air gap to overcome.
@f00l This is a great blog post on why this sort of thing is happening more: https://danluu.com/cpu-bugs/
@dashcloud software and hardware monoculture are issues too. Just like a group of biological clones would be much easier to wipe out with a disease or virus, so is the environment (though thankfully the inroads made by better platforms will help).
here is the manual update for windows 7-8.1 http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4056897
on windows 10 it automatically downloads and will install the next time you reboot
I have a friend who does research on this kind of stuff and even he was surprised about the branch prediction exploit. The amount of effort it takes to reproduce the exact circumstance is pretty high. Still it’s surprising that the possibility of this exploit has been in most processors for decades now.
@LordSalem I think the biggest worry is all the cloud situations where everyone’s data is mingling in an environment where everyone has user access.
Y’all don’t have to pull out your pre-IBM PC computers to be safe. The Raspberry Pi isn’t vulnerable to Spectre or Meltdown. This is a terrific blog post about it.
@sligett I’m going to set one up as a wallet controller for the various cryptocoins I play with.
I thought this was another Peeps update…
/youtube mediocre Peeps update
@medz
/giphy "compromised peeps"
@medz This video does remind me that I have purchased some Peeps with the intent to send them to Mehployees. Can you tell me the address to mail them to? Is it the same as the return address on my orders from Meh? (Oh, I see my graters are at the post office for me to pick up today.) Now if only I can find those Peeps…
@sligett No. I still don’t know if they are all working out of the new warehouse location or what. It’s almost like they don’t want us to send them annoying or worthless crap. @matthew probably wouldn’t get them if you sent them there anyway.
Great article, some of which is over my head.
Trying to find out if my distro’s kernel has been updated
https://meltdownattack.com/#faq-fix
My windows says its preparing to download the update. There is no box that says to download or install now. When you go to restart, it doesn’t have the option to install updates and restart. So I put it back to sleep. Any ideas?
